Holloway: Millwall executed Derby game plan to perfection

IAN Holloway praised his players for executing their game plan to perfection in Saturday's 1-0 victory over Derby County.

Steve Morison's second-half header gave the Lions a priceless away win over the high-flying Rams at the iPro Stadium.

And Holloway claimed the result was down to thorough pre-match preparation.

He said: "I think I got what I expected from Derby. They looked buoyant, full of themselves and full of vigour. We spoke about how to stop them but looked nervous at the start.

"But the longer the game went on, the more practised and rehearsed we looked and the more we got to grips with their passing.

"We had done an awful lot of work on Derby but I had a go at the players at half time because we didn't get enough pressure on the ball.

"We were getting tackles in but there wasn't enough support to create counter attacks. That came in the second half and we scored a fantastic goal.

"The lads carried out our instructions brilliantly and they ran for each other.

"That's the first time we've been in front for quite a while but we could have scored more. We had more clear-cut chances than them."

Holloway was berated at the final whistle by home fans who felt Millwall had time wasted and feigned injury to disrupt the flow of the game.

But he said:  "Danny Shittu and Scott Malone are on the team coach and they won't be fit for Tuesday. They were on the floor and I was being criticised. What can I do about that?

"DJ Campbell tweaked his hamstring and Shane Lowry might have a problem with his knee.

"I saw some strange decisions as the away manager. I thought the referee's performance was bizarre. I can't believe what I saw out there.

"Not a million years would I encourage my players to be anything other than honest."

Great result!! Gutted other results did not go our way, just shows it's in our hands.... Blackpool and Charlton vital games for us now!!!

I love the football we are playing the forwards need to be more prolific that's all. Clean sheet too well done back four!! Noticed a lot of Internet managers having a rant about team selection... Well done Mr Holloway, well done players and most of all well done the mighty 500 for being the 12th man!!

Funny how now everyone thinks Holloway knows what he's doing! People calling him clueless had me in stitches - come out of your caves and admit you were wrong! Ollie has always said it is a long term project and our deep-rooted problems weren't going to go away overnight. Let's just get behind the man because God knows there's nobody else out there who's a) better and b) who would actually want the job. Well done IH, now on to Tuesday.

@harryfabian: I'll admit I've been a big doubter of Holloway and he still has a lot to do to convince me. But I'll readily take today for starters and will be more than happy to be proved wrong if he gets it right.

If it means that i have egg on my face at this seasons end, then i would like nothing better. Not time to point score, i'm just enjoying this saturday, the wifes happy as well, that i'm happy...........roll on tuesday

@harryfabian: Just crawled out of my cave to say what a great result. Like others I have my doubts whether Ollie is the man for the position we're in but it's never stopped me supporting the team. I've also said before, I'd like nothing more than to put up a public apology to Ollie for ever doubting him if he keeps us up.

      @harryfabian:
I'm delighted we won. Does that mean I am suddenly going to forget the previous performances, be converted to his tactics or decide he was right to shuffle the team every game, asking them to play in a formation they neither understand nor are equipped to play? Nope. There have been all too many false dawns this season leading people to veer from agony to ecstasy and back again on this forum.

But I might think again if we escape and start to play something vaguely resembling football. Let's hope I have to.

But he's come out at a moments notice and done the job- I'm so pleased for him- this is his chance to get back in the action now. Hope he can keep it up... WELL DONE ROBBO!

Finally, a result that reflects the effort our lads put in... A DESERVED WIN!!!! Hopefully it's the start of that 'leveling out' business everyone's been talking about! COYL!!

I did not see this one coming at all and I was textually vocal on this point, I admit I was wrong/pessimistic and I am happy to eat my body weight in humble pie. Yes the teams around us won BUT it has brought Blackpool and friends firmly into play whilst putting massive pressure on Charlton to not only win their games in hand but to win at ours in the six pointer!!! For more teams in our crosshairs now after just one win.

Such a shame we did not make things easier for ourselves in the 3 games a few weeks ago.

Apparently we played bad tactics in time wasting. Good!! Do it all season! Score a goal, park the bus and time waste just keep my millwall in the championship. I'd take a dirty maradonna goal every week. I'd even let us sign Lomas as a player and he scores a hat trick every week. I just want this season over with and I'll take our current league position.

PS loving dunney and robbo back in the mix

Why can't other teams accept that we have done a job on them rather than moan about time wasting tactics etc. How many times do we see teams at The Den waste time, dive, cheat and anything else they can do to get a result. Difference is we have to play against the officials too. All I can say is well done boys and may this result be the start of a good run.

Of course they did. Forde was time wasting from the first minute, which led to him & Shittu getting warned by the ref after 30 minutes.
How many of your players went down "injured" in the second half only to get up and play on, unaffected?
    Disgraceful gamesmanship.
I accept Derby deserved to lose by the way. I just think you should have tried to beat us without cheating.

Great performance from everyone - players and travelling fans; and one of the most shocking performances by the ref, especially in the first half, I've seen - and we've seen some shockers. The millwall commitment we want from the players but quality play as well. Midfield beginning to gel and defence coped brilliantly both with their attack and disruption from injury. As for the t*** earlier complaining about fake injuries - yeah three substitutions for injuries as then we go down to ten by taking another player off. Believe me we're not that good we can so that deliberately. We just outfought and outplayed them today - and had the better chances throughout. We have to make this the start of something, not a one-off. And play like that against the strugglers, not just the top sides. We can do this!!!

Really hope that we can all get behind the manager and back him 100 % now. We are lucky to have him.
    36 points to play for.
Let's push on and stick together.

did morrison play in the middle upfront or did he play wider on the right.
i hope he played as a proper centre forward,as that is where he is more dangerous IMO.
well done to all you traveling fans, you deserved this result most of all, must have felt really sweet.

@jim1222: He wasn't good to be fair apart from the goal. Him and DJ don't seem to know how to work together IMO. He did play more centrally though

Derby fans on train home said nothing to us us about fake injuries or time wasting. Said we just played better than them - and out sang them too. And said played better football than some of the "top" teams they've played recently. Popsider talking s****. And anyway Fordey nowhere near a proper time waster anyway - he's not learnt to do that back heeling the post four times before every goal kick yet!

And let's get over the irritation of the other teams at the bottom winning. Their fans will be feeling even more shocked and gutted at our result - that was the really unexpected one (by them). And to be honest, we've been living off poor results from other teams for too long. Couldn't go on - it's got to be all about us getting results now. And we can.

@ BARNLION : as usual you have nothing good to say about your team, even after such a good result and performance you are your usual negative self, and cannot find anything to give them credit for.

@bordersarebest0170: Boarders you must have been waiting all night to see if i had posted yet on NAD, I dont think that I was negative regarding the match yesterday, it was a result that I did not expect but am very glad we got all 3 points, but sad that all the others picked up wins as well.

The sawllow comment is in regarding to its just 1 win and we want more before I get too extactic, which I hope they do on Tuesday and this coming Saturday so credit to the lads for theresult.

@ BARNLION: as to your stupid comment about waiting up all night, yeah if yeah like. As for explaining to me the meaning of the swallows comment you made, I would have thought it pretty obvious I understood it perfectly hence my post, I didn't need you to draw me a picture. Still in your last post you give the boys a bit of credit, so fair enough.

@JIM 28: yeah well done Jim, that midfield looks good, we are playing through there now, big improvement, in the build up to our goal, yes it's a lovely cross from Martin, but what about GARVEN'S clever free kick that gets Martin away down the left eh.

I fort the falling out between holloway & garvan mite work against us but it's the complete opposite. I now think we should try our best to sign him permanently. Different class

Yeah, not a quick player, but certainly looks a good one, works tirelessly, puts in a tackle, and can certainly pass it.
