Millwall boss wary of midfield duo reaching booking limit

IAN Holloway says he has subbed Ed Upson in Millwall's last two matches partly because he is wary of the midfielder picking up his tenth booking of the season.

Upson, along with midfield partner Shaun Williams, are both sitting on nine yellow cards for the campaign, meaning they are one caution away from triggering a suspension.

The January signing from Yeovil Town has yet to play a full 90 minutes for his new club.

"I'm very conscious of them getting banned," Holloway said. "If they get booked in the same game it will be an absolute nightmare for us."

But Holloway admits that he is eager to see improvements in Upson's performances.

He added: "Williams has slotted straight in but I think Ed's misunderstood one or two things that I want.

"I've spoken to Ed this week and he's looking more like himself in training.

"He's an attack-minded player but he hasn't quite got forward when I have needed him to. He needs to push up a bit more.

"He's a very nice lad but a very shy lad and he's got to step to the plate with us. There was a clear difference in him on Monday and Tuesday because I've now showed him what I want.

"He has not been here long enough to see some of the things I have shown the others – he didn't come to Portugal.

"It takes everybody time to bed in and I'm still learning about the club myself. But I am absolutely delighted to have the two of them for our long-term future."

Lions boss Holloway believes his midfield is missing the experience of Nicky Bailey, who is currently sidelined by a back injury.

"We have not looked the same without Nicky because he organises, talks to other players, he's brave and always wants the ball," Holloway said.

"He would have helped the new lads settle in a bit quicker and I'd have had a good talker. You can't expect a quiet lad from Yeovil to come in and organise the midfield."

@jmse14: these things take time, certainly more time that IH has had and maybe a whole season. We can't expect all players to switch into gear as soon as they are told what to do, they will have to learn by playing in the new system.

@Jim28: I think it was a mistake letting Trotter go, even if he'd only stayed till the end of the season. He was inconsistent, but on his day he was the best midfielder we have and beggars can't be choosers in our position. But there's no return for him now - especially after virtually backing Bolton against us recently.

I like Upson and if he is a shy lad, it's going to take time to bed him in. What he needs is the senior players giving him confidence on the training pitch and reassurances from Williams that he will cover him should he go forward. One goal and his confidence will surge and Ollie knows how to make his players happy. Upson will be a good signing, hard to be a bad one when he only cost 100k.

The bottom line is they will both pick up their tenth booking at some point, so we'll just have to get on with it. Can't really see the logic in substituting either of them when we're only a goal behind. Maybe take one off if we're a couple of goals to the good, if that ever happens that is.

You've come to the right place lads. Nowhere else in the country will you be able to find someone to talk you through an FA disciplinary hearing like Lowry and Dunney.

14 games left, both managed 9 yellows so far so unless they stop tackling the 10th will happen.

Just hope they don't both get suspended in the same match.

If Ed tries to attack and makes a mistake and the crowd gets on his back being shy he won't try again as his confidence will be shot. Knowing our crowd lets hope Ed doesn't make errors and/or gets more confidence soon!

      @MFC Lion:

yes , we need to give the whole team time and support - we will make mistakes but if heads don't drop we will get out of this - sometimes the immediate negativity of our support is embarrassing - be critical, but be constructive - of course we can improve and some players can do better, but calling them s*** all the time does not help - once gain look at Pompey ,they started the day bottom 6 of league 2 13,000 crowd tonight - puts us to shame

My concern is that if IH has not really got much to change by now then I doubt that he can manage it in the games left. For a club in the position we were in when he joined I can not think of a better realistic choice out there, not one.

Things he does at times perplex me but it all seems to point to the assumption that there are some real deep seeded issues at the club/within the squad. KJ seems to have realised this and got out with his head held high and basically scot free with reputation intact. I know the loan players high wages must have caused a divide but the fact things show very little sign of real improvement and with an increasing amount of players appearing seemingly disgruntled for whatever reason I just feel we could have Alex Ferguson in and it would not help. The rot seems too deep?????

Have you bugged Ollie's office? Perhaps you're hacking his phone? Instead or reporting every last word OH mutters, why not write an actual article about the club? Something historic, a player profile, where are they now?, anything. I can't handle much more. I don't want to hear anyone from the club say anything else until it's connected to actually winning a game of football.

Without Trotter we have looked poorer in midfield not only that he could score goals as well as make them. Bring him back!

What a load of nonsense. If you didn't play players on the basis that they may get booked and be banned, Lowry would never take part in a game again. It is part and parcel of the game, the players have to take the field and play their best, if they get booked for the First, Tenth or Ninety Fith time, deal with it. You should have players, who are fit and able to slot in. Thats the point of having a squad of players. Jimmy can cover more than adequately for one or two games. I must admit I am getting worried by some of the things IH says and does. There is far too much information for opposing teams and its not say one thing and do something else, he does it for real. Now all Brighton have to do is go at Williams and Upson, knowing theyb will be trying to avoid getting booked. Brilliant.

can't they simply play the way they play...if booked we'll manage, i'd rather them make a challenge...than bottle one because they might be missing for a game or two. plus it's not like we are on a fantastic run of form is it, the sooner both are suspended the better because we are fast running out of games...then we can try and get a run going and try to avoid relegation...but lets not kid ourselves, we are proper pony and deserve to go down based on the Yeovil, Bolton and Barnsley results alone, we've won once under Ollie and that was a fluke goal.

He obviously doesn't fancy Jimmy or Wright .
I think he's got it right to be honest,I would only bring jimmy back just in front of the back 4 to shore things up & chase everyone down.
I think he has Williams lined up for that job with as he says Upson pushing up.
Will eventually work but will take time.

Probably in League 1 six months in:)

Jimmy Abou, is the best worker and defensive player we have. I know Holloway put Woolford in the middle to defend. He is the only who can score and we dont want that, what will your lap dog DJ think? rrrr bless.

People on here still talking about trotter, can't believe it, when will people get it, HE DID NOT WANT TO PLAY FOR US, HE WANTED OUT, since going to Bolton he has been subbed halfway through his two games, and was a sub that never even got on in the most recent, I haven't rated him for a long time, he was part of a losing , poor performing side, so why people want him back for the occasional good pass and constant laziness I just don't know.

Quote Holloway "You can't expect a quiet lad from Yeovil to come in and organise the midfield." - I'm confused. who signed the quiet lad from Yeovil. Listen i'm no fan of either Lomas or Holloway but facts speak for themselves, Lomas has a better record then Holloway. I could not give a flying f%ck about Holloways track record, if i did, i would remind myself that he has walked out of every job he has had. On track record of our manager and players we should comfortably be in the play offs place if not pushing for a auto prom place, no i dont take drugs!. When you consider that Henry, Trotter and Keogh have all literally left for a fraction of the price they're worth is shocking - the simple fact is, all 3 players would make the current squad and Henry and trotter would start in any mans team. I'm confused that Trotter was allowed to leave as he wouldnt commit to stay, is that not the contract Simeon Jackson just signed? Trots would be more valuable to team and ensure our safety then a unplayed, unfit non firing Jackson. Moreover, Fordey and Lowry no commitment, Morison and DJ will return to their parent clubs come May. Where is the consistency, who managers these transfers and decisions? Why loan spurs 6th choice right back and let the brilliant Adam Smith go to Bournemouth. Why let Maik Taylor go and bring in a lesser keeper in Bywater? Who signed Hoyte? Why is millwall not encouraging youth through anymore? Ok i am going off track with this but my point is; Holloway lives in the stars, i want war crys, blood sweat and tears. I dont want his stupid jokes, comments about players weight, his shy etc, shittu's knees, his never dying love for DJ or what players you have hanged for loans. None of it does any players confidence any good! He needs to stop playing the clown, the honeymoon period is over and we are heading for a divorce. He wont be here next season. I hope all are reading this get down the den on saturday and cheer us on. We need to support these guys and encourage, whilst its frustrating to watch at times. With the fans on their back, players dont want the ball and are scared to make a mistake. Lets take the game to Brighton, they're on a back of a few defeats and wont fancy us.
    Keep roaring COYL

@millwall-loyal82: Lomas tactics were always negative, he didn't have a clue what he was doing half the time, signed some old crocks whilst we already had players who weren't committed at the club (Henry, Trotter and Keogh), always blamed players rather than his lack of a plan B... Lomas gave the players no confidence at all!

I agree with you about not giving a s*** about managers track records as long as they get results, but Lomas was clearly ruining our club and fed us fans bulls**t every week.... every time we conceded the guy would curl up in the dugout and would let the players get on with it, clearly not giving a sh*t... oh and he signed Hoyte, Bywater, Chaplow, Paul Connelly, MacDonald.... all of which have been a complete waste of money!!!

Holloway is actually trying to implement different styles of football to win games and always has a plan b,c and d although they might not always work... but at least he has the bo**ocks to stand up for his players and shoulder the blame and try to win a football match rather than settling for a 1-0 loss!!

KJ knew he had to leave after 6 years because it was all going tits up!! And now those players who learnt how KJ wanted to play football for 6 years have had 2 different managers in 6 months.... new tactics, new teammates and have had nobody backing them since KJ left the club... until now where Holloway wont blame players.

It all takes time but as long as we get behind the club and players, there is no reason why we can't stay up this season!
