Report: Barnsley 1-0 Millwall

MILLWALL suffered a dismal defeat at fellow strugglers Barnsley to leave them teetering just a point above the relegation zone.

Jim O'Brien's early goal proved to be the difference between the two sides and Charlton's win over QPR slashed the Lions' cushion above the bottom three.

Ian Holloway's side rarely looked like getting back into the game as the Tykes resolutely defended their one-goal advantage.

Shane Lowry, DJ Campbell and Scott McDonald came into the side in place of Alan Dunne, Lee Martin and Jermaine Easter, who were dropped from the XI that started against Bolton.

Millwall had gone 1-0 down in their last two games and that trend continued as O'Brien punished some sloppy defending to convert a simple long ball after just four minutes.

The Lions were slow to respond and McDonald's blocked shot after pinball inside the area was the best chance they created in the opening 20 minutes.

Campbell had a rare sight of goal when Ed Upson's lofted pass was poorly dealt with by goalkeeper Luke Steele, but the striker could not steer home the loose ball.

Upson then fired over from distance before Steve Morison's glancing header was palmed around the post by Steele as Millwall finally began to find their rhythm.

And McDonald must have thought he had equalised when he flicked Ryan Fredericks' cross towards the far corner, only for Steele to claw the ball away.

The Lions passed and kept the ball well in the first half but nerves got the better of them after the break as they put in a disjointed display.

Morison had an early effort on goal with an ambitious half-volley that sailed over before Danny Shittu made a vital block to deny substitute Stephen Dawson.

It was not until the final 15 minutes that Millwall finally created meaningful openings.

Steele made a double save to first palm away Shaun Williams' ferocious drive and then parry Campbell's snapshot from close range.

But the visitors had David Forde to thank for keeping the score at 1-0 when he thwarted Dale Jennings and Chris O'Grady in quick succession.

Williams then curled a 25-yard free kick inches wide of Steele's near post but the Lions' brief rally proved too little too late.

Relegation is looking inevitable - I can’t see us getting another win this season under Holloway. Worst of all we’re not even going down fighting. I never expected Holloway to tighten up the defence, but where are the goals – just five goals in eight games? Not sure who he’s going to rant about tonight - the Barnsley manager, the pitch or the referee? He needs to forget all the clever b******* talk and concentrate on the basics - getting some wins to keep us up.

@Micky Lions: Agree 100% Mickey - 1 win in 9 with us and 1 win in 9 with the nigels before us and he talks still as if he's up there with Mourinho and Pellegrini. If the players we have are not up to the way he wants us to play, are not clever enough or adaptable enough for the complex tactics (????) he wants to use, to continue on blindly is madness and will only end one way. IMO a good manager at this level gets the most out of the team he's given or can afford to assemble. You can't keep talking, as he does, about how the players are learning his way, buying into it,and all the other b******* he comes out with like it's all their fault - it's your f****** fault!!!!!

@Adsy77777: You only have to look at the old Wimbledon FC.
They played to the strengths of the players, it wasn't pretty but look how long they lasted in the top tier with a second rate team and limited finances and small crowds and don't forget an FA Cup thrown in for good measure against the top team of the time.
If someone had suggested to that lot about playing tippy tappy football they would have laughed in their faces.
As I say it may not have been pretty but they had to play the style that suited the players and it worked for a very long time.
You have to cut your cloth to suit your means.
You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear.
What's the difference between a bucket of s*** and the Millwall team.------------The bucket.

yes true and that win in his 2nd game - we need someone who can get wins out of limited performances - some mangers have that knack/know how - things can change but it is more hope than expectation

4-5-1 don't work and especially when we using strikers in winger positions and a winger in Central attacking midfield. Squad wasn't good enough when lomas tried it and the squad (more or less the same) cannot do it now. Maybe tighten up that defence with Dunne and Bassone instead of more attacking Malone/Fredricks.

Need a quick Right sided CB still who can read the game. Need a right winger who can actually play and need a miracle to stay up now! Clear out the whole squad. Henry has found his feet at Wolves and Keogh scored again for Blackpool. Write off the season and start again with fresh hungry young players who want to play for the badge.

      @Bexley_Lion: Iy
It's not just about writing off the season, its relegation. The last three times I've seen us go down to the third division it's taken us years to come back. You lose your best players (if you've any decent ones to lose) and it's always a lot tougher than you think - just look at Sheff Utd and Bristol City.

It's still not too late. We've got a lot of points to play for, but now's not the time to be trying to win plaudits for fancy football or to be slagging off other teams for their different style of play. Holloway's got to instill some belief & spirit into this team and start grinding our results whatever way he can.

IH is going to take a lot of criticism and rightly so - why can't we have settled team - last week Easter was chosen to start and now what, not good enough - we heard that Dunne did well and he is dropped and so on and so on .............. If Jackson is brought in as a class striker why doesn't he start?

it is too much to expect Upson and Williams coming up from lower teams to hold a midfie4ld in that formation - it is totally niave

Cant wait for the exuses for this one. I am sure IH will say there are positives and how pleased he is. Well I am not. Is it not in the realms of possibility that one of our highly paid strikers could actually put the ball in the net. i know this would be something new for them, but they might actually like the feeling and try and do it again, who know's. When IH took charge I do not think anyone thought he would work miracles, but come on, this is just stupid. Someone please explain the point of the last substitution? Even better, please explain what the F**k is really going on. Is there a hidden agenda that we the fans are not being told, because I can not think of any other reason for the decisions being made at the moment.

TO BE FAIR WE ARE PLAYING A LOT MORE ATTRACTIVE FOOTBALL STRINGING A LOT MORE PASSES TO GETHER AND RETAING THE BALL . WE WERE NOT DOING THIS UNDER KENNY OR LOMAS IT WAS 2 TOUCHES AND A HOPEFULL BALL NORMALLY IN THE AIR THAT WENT TO THE OPPOSING TEAM. DO WE THINK IH HAS TAKEN THEM TO SPEC SAVE

    Not happy at all.
stop tinkering and forget about trying to get us playing sexy football as we haven't got the personnel or the funds to bring em in. Forget trying to win pretty and just win at all costs. I'd understand if it was November even December but its now the business end of the season so all that matters is winning as our joke of a goals against record will relegate us. Bottom three team can hold on to a goal lead but if we went 1 up we'd still have lost. So called strikers cant score for s*** probably cause none of em are really playing up front.
    Boring predictable and frustrating.
Dont even expect the annual home win over the anoraks.
I predict relegation on the last day on goal difference to charlton.

@potty1: I honestly don't give a monkey's about Berylson. He's here for the regeneration and some glory along the way. English football is a fleeting interest for most foriegn chairman. We're the fans who were here generations before him - and will be here long after him and most of the board have gone (and probably taken their loans back with them).

Initially I was strongly against Holloway's appointment, he walked away from Blackpool and Palace because he "lost the dressing room" I admit after he took over I changed my mind and thought he was a good choice and new what to do. To be fair to him he took over a very poor squad full of problems and no strength in depth. However he has not solved Millwall's major problem- failure to score goals. He continues with Morison for some unknown reason and has bought in a couple of it seems ineffective forwards, leaves Easter on the bench and plays Mcdonald who has not set the world alight.
I may be in minority of one on this board but Holloways major error was to allow Trotter to leave, undoubtedly imo our best midfield player and when he played we often won. Holloway should have forgotten his own ego and tried do do everything in his power to persuade Trotter to stay-after all he talks the good talk.
Now Millwall are in a bucket of sh** I want Millwall to be first, to win and to be above personalities.
I am not the slightest bit interested in Holloways natter or his excuses.. give us long suffering supporters something to cheer about. What you tell your players Mr Holloway goes for you too.

I thought IH was a big risk when appointed, I would have gone for someone defensive minded and staying up rather than having a laugh, a joke and a happy relegation. I was not there today but this was a game where defeat had to be avoided and the team should have been set up tactically and mentally to do just that. Obviously they weren't. Yet again.

How many players have Burnley used this season? And how many times have they played the same organised team? Mind you Sean Dyche does not crack many jokes.

until today I thought we would stay up, hook or by crook - but now it is hard to see where a win is coming from - how do we beat Brighton - these players need to respond massively - one result for us was Yeovil winning which keeps Donny in reach - I don't consider Yeovil a threat because they will go down so if we finish below them forget it - losing is one thing but the manner of defeat tells more

We need to dip in the loan market and bring in some decent wide men. We dont take on the opposition full backs or put enough decent crosses in the box. It makes no sense playing strikers as wide men. A jimmy carter, paul stephenson or paul ifill would go down a treat....

Just seen the goal on sky
what a really s h I t goal malone shocking defending could have stopped the run and had a chance to block on the line, beevers too far up field to help out, shittu looked like he was a right back cutting inside to make a last ditch saving tackle -at least he made an effort - tbth thats the story of our season, the players have got themselves in this mess and will not try to get us out of it, all well and good blaming managers but ultimately the players haven't delivered yet again. They're Quick to come out and say they need us more than ever and we're in this together and pls turn up and support us, but when will they turn up and help support us by giving us three points wether its deserved or not or wether its through pretty football or not. God how off putting this bunch are.

Why are we at the bottom end of the table, because our so called strikers have scored 12 goals in 32 games and our s*** defence has conceded 60 goals, says it all really. Too many average players picking up championship wages. It's gonna be a struggle to survive now and I really don't think that we have the players with the heart and courage to see us to safety, I hope they prove me wrong!!!!!!

Nobody said it was gonna be easy. When IH was appointed , we were ALL punching the air and singing his praises. 2 wins put together will be a massive boost , starting Saturday. Don't forget our mandatory 3 points against the Anoraks. We will be ok , just. Mark my words , keep the faith.

I get very concerned when I hear managers talking about sticking together - that is a given

also careless use of words worry me - to say we are back to square one is the wrong thing to say - how can everything he has done be gone because of one bad result and performance - if he thinks this we are in big big trouble - the correct response should be, I learned a lot of things from today - we need to do better in x, y, z -

@Block 8: Block 8. I was like you. Totally optimistic with IH and here we go. I even said Yeovil, Bolton and Barnsley will start out season and here we go, we will not go down. Now I have lost faith with IH plans and the players he has bought in. He has no idea and the forward line is s**t. I feel sorry for JB and the question is will he stay and put money in if we go down?

Well actually no - we weren't all ecstatic! Some of us actually wanted that miserable, angry, moany, much-hated old git Warnock because we thought he understood the club, the kind of players he was dealing with, the opposition we are up against and how to grind out points without giving a monkeys whether the so-called enlightened followers of the beautiful game's formation of the month were bored.

I usually prefer to be positive, but today I'm struggling and in fact going to be very depressing. Ih has now had eight games, brought in his own players, setup his own fitness regime and worked on his style of playing. All of which I think the fans have been patient with, as we were not expecting miracles. For me though now the tactics are stranger by the week, seems like substitutions for the sake of it, with little or no thought for the balance of the team and there must be something clearly wrong when you shove as many attackers on as possible and stil we do not score against lower placed teams. Looking at the fixtutes left I cannot see a team that cannot score goals getting more than the odd draw at home, so I'm of the same opinion as most that it's not looking good. As I say I tend to look on the positive and would say to some of our younger suffering fans, this is the millwall ride. Crap now and most of the time, but it makes the highs special.

I am bitterly disappointed that we haven't turned the corner yet, but I have to say far more concerning for me is Holloway's bizarre behaviour and insistence in saying all this cr*p all the time. He says far too much, far too often. I wish he would shut up because up to this point it's all been hot air and f*ck all else. Fancy football my butt, WE NEED POINTS !!!!

Prepare for Port Vale... I know Henry & Trotter did our heads in and asked to leave, but they did important jobs and haven't been adequately replaced, he just plays strikers where attacking midfielders should be and we're not scoring as a result. Can see us paying other clubs to take over the contracts of Bailey, Chaplow, McDonald etc, if anyone is mug enough.

look at the next 8 games - I think we can write off the trip to derby - but in the other 7 we can potentially take points - I think we need 3 wins and 2 draws from those 7 - if we can be on 39pts at the end of March we can stay up

Don't know how we can't hit a barn door, trouble is we got people in the team that don't give a f*** so long as they get paid, our wage bill must be very high, strikers are a waste of time, we should of bought that Grey from Luton bet he would of got a few by now. 60 goals against that's why we're going down. Time is running out 2 points we should of had 9

If we continue to play like this for the rest of the season not only will be relegated but if Charlton, Barnsley and Yeovil win a couple of their games in hand we could suffer the indignity of finishing bottom of the Championship. Campbell, Jackson, Morison and probably McDonald will be gone before the start of next season but at least we will have Easter and Marquis to bang in the goals!!!!!

Millwall lose because the team is a unstructured shambles and that is down to the manager. To see what proper organisation does look at the impact Tony Pulis had with what is basically IH's squad of players at Palace. Any bets on how long it will be before IH says he has lost the dressing room and walks?

Holloway needs to bypass his ego, admit it's not working, get back to basics and come up with a plan or a way to play, with the players we've got that will give us a fighting chance. Personally, I can't see it happening. Sorry but the blokes a c**t in my opinion, a confident c**t but still a c**t!

my early days at millwall were the old division three, what an experience those cold rainy tuesday night away days, at huddersfield, carlisle, oxford etc, moving from end to end during half time at the old den, if there was akick off in the away end the police would just escort you round to another part of the ground....who remembers about 100 millwall going in with 4000 pompey...the good ald days a real good spirit we did not expect to win.... when we did it was a bonus. Now all the johnny come latelys who have jumped on the bandwagon the last ten yrs since we became wembley regulars, moaning cause we aint fighting for promotion.....division three will be like coming home

@tonytowneronthewing: I've been through the divisions with Millwall. It's not the level we play at that counts, it's not the fact that we can't get to Wembley every year; glory hunters; Millwall's not the club for you. What upsets me is going down without a fight and watching my team slide, sacrificed for the sake of one man's ego.

The level of intelligence isn't very high on here, and a lot of posters would be more suited to palace or charlton. Cringeworthy.

There is a kudos with being a millwall fan that other teams fans can only dream of .....if you want success be like all the other collaborators who desert their parish team support arsenal or chelsea........if you keepmwhingeing whemn the club is going through a bad couple of years you are no better than the s*** currently on the pitch......millwall aint about john berylson, ian holloway or the current players they are just passing through......millwalls about real legends kitch, harry, dunphy. terry, and my main man tony towner...its about people like storming norman and proud to say it people like me........real millwall people will know what I mean, ......if you dont go and watch the anoraks they need you more than we do

In total agreement. We are in essence a small club, punching above our weight.
When we have good times celebrate our success on the pitch
When we have bad times be proud of the fact that you are supporting a club like no other club and celebrate, because we are unique
No one likes us because we are so different, we are Millwall and always will be whatever division we are in...
we are not down yet, still a lot of football to be played and whatever the outcome we will still be supporting the best club in the world, so let's cut out all this badmouthing the players, manager chairmen etc and get behind the club and see where we are at the end of the season

Im sorry but i cant have all this criticism of the manager, ok he's mouthy but we all loved it a month ago, we've been in serious decline for a year , the players we were all excited about signing are hopeless , fourth bottom looks unlikely now but to blame the third manager in a shocking run is unfair and very unhelpful

@thecolumbusblock: Sorry mate, but he deserves criticism. I wasn't overjoyed with his appointment myself, but I was quite prepared to be proved wrong, nothing would have made me happier than if we had won all of his games in charge playing exciting attractive football. Likewise, others who did welcome him with open arms have seen their hope shattered by poor results. poor performances, poor tactics and enough b******* talked on every subject imaginable - are they not entitled to change their minds based on what we have all seen? We are all Milwall supporters on here , no matter how many years you've been going and how often; we all want the best for the club; most of us have grown used to the highs and lows of supporting our club and love it all the more for it. Me personally, I cannot remember a situation like we have now, an ego maniac leading us to relegation and years of struggle (anyone who thinks we will come back up is an optomist in the extreme), without a fight and insisting that his way is the right way and the only despite increasing evidence that it's not working. This site exists because we all like to discuss the club we love, and to my mind, all opinions are welcome and are there to be discussed (without resorting to personal insults!). No-one who supports Millwall cannot be concerned about the results and performances. Ollie was brought in to save us and at the moment is failing spectacularly. People are entitled to express their concerns, their anger and to have changed their mind.

The facts are there, that so far, his appointment has been little less than a disaster and his apparent inablity or willingness to change tack and to grind out results, offers little hope for the battle to come.

@thecolumbusblock: I think with the right man in charge we should of had enough to stay up.

It is general football knowledge that Holloway is not a tactical guru but more a motivator. Other than the Ipswich game I haven't seen too much passion, so Mr H if you do take the trouble to view sites like this here are a few observations...

Goal Keepers :- That's a no-brainer, Fordy or a clueless hamster (we had one of those as a manager)

    Defence:-
Scott Malone- Thinks he is a winger but he is no Andy Cole (who doesn't even play for Chelsea now) get rid.
Alan Dunne:- You praised him to the skys last week even though he was at fault for Bolton's goal only to drop him today!
Danny Shittu:- Credit to you he looks like the same player since you came into the club as he was last season.
Paul Robinson:- Has he got AIDS? Putting him on the bench while playing Dunne at CB cost us against Bolton.
Shane Lowry:- Hard as nails but sent off for the 105th time against Sheffield W.
Ryan Fredericks:- Light weight Spurs reserve who got lucky against Ipswich.
Mark Beevers:- Another one who has got AIDS
WE HAVE CONCEEDED MORE GOALS THAN ANY TEAM IN THIS DIVISION!!!!!

    Midfield:-
Chaplow and Bailey can f*** right off. A pair of underperforming twats.
Jimmy Abdou :- For f*** sake, play him in front of our fragile back four (or three or two if we are losing).
Josh Wrong:- F*** off and pose with your bother.
Ed Upson and Shaun Williams:- The jury is out but your League One experiences will probably come in handy next season.

    Forwards:-
Tara Palmer-Tomkinson:- Has more up front than anyone else at the club.
Steve Morison:- 1 goal in 14 games. Perhaps it's time to f*** him off back to those scum Yorkshire c****.
Jarmaine Easter:- I have to eat a bit of humble pie here, the only contract I would have given concerning him last season would have been to a contract killer!
DJ Campbell:- I said at the time a big risk. Another loan player on an inflated wage who only needs to get to the end of the season so some scum c*** agent can get to work and earn his 20%!
Simeon Jackson:- Did Ok for the Pikey's but had a similar experience in Germany that the Jews had in WW2, so hopefully doesn't fall into the same category as Mr Upson and Williams...
Scott McDonald:- Almost from day one told to f*** off, but now playing!!! Can hold the ball up well and has a good first touch .

So Mr Motivator (and I am not talking about the silvery in the 1990's) lets see the motivation or the tactical knowhow because at the moment we aren't seeing either.............

Time rapidly running out to turn it around.

Looking less and less likely to be honest. That win for Charlton will do wonders for their confidence and with 3 games in hand I think its safe to assume they will get at least a point to go ahead of us.

We always yoyo between the 3rd and 2nd tier. Unfortunately that's just the way it is for wall.

Going to stop stressing about it and just hope the players put in some good performances so if it does end in relegation it's not a total embarrassment.
