Holloway: New Millwall signing has a left foot like a wand

IAN Holloway has expressed his delight at the signing of Shaun Williams.

The MK Dons star has completed a medical and will sign a two-and-a-half year contract with Millwall after turning down a move to rivals Brighton.

News of the Lions' persuit of the 27-year-old was first revealed by NewsAtDen last week.

Holloway has confirmed that he wants to restore Williams to his preferred position in the centre of midfield, having played in defence for the Dons this season.

He said: "Shaun is someone I have liked for a long, long time. I couldn't afford him before – this time last year, MK Dons wanted £1million for him.

"I've managed to talk the chairman into buying him now, even though we could have waited until the summer when he would have been a free transfer.

"He had other options but he chose us. Hopefully he'll work well with the way I want to play.

"I want him to step him on now and help us immediately but, also in the long term, to get better than he already is.

"In the past, my teams have passed and moved the ball quickly and he wants to be a part of that. I spoke to him about my vision of him and where he will be in the future.

"I don't just see him as a centre half, I see him as an Iniesta, Xavi or a Charlie Adam type. I would let him go forward and give him a free role.

"His left foot is like a wand and he can create things around the edge of the box. Hopefully he's buying into our vision for him, rather than money."

Williams will wear shirt number 17 and is expected to go straight into the squad to face Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow.

Looks like he's resigned to losing Trotter and it doesn't look good for Chaplow.

@bermlion: I am sure and happy that Ollie will have all his new players in his team for Sheffield W ( Campbell , Fredericks and Williams ) I can also see him getting at least one more new player before the deadline on Friday.

Love the way that IH makes his statements with confidence and seems to be very carefully hand picking the blokes he thinks will compliment the existing squad. It,l be interesting to see if some of the lads who have struggled in recent times rise to the challenge. Hope they give Wednesday a super Tuesday to remember and send wall fans home very well pleased.

Kudos to Ollie, Mick and the board. Spoke to a few MK fans about him and read some of the responses on twitter about his departure and they are all gutted. They reckon losing him means their chances of making the L1 play offs have ended as to his influence on the side. Big player for them, aparently a snip at 250K. :0)

Why can't right footed Trotter play alongside him? They may compliment each other perfectly, we do not know what IH has in mind for the midfield as yet so it is a waste of time to speculate. Whatever happens the team has to get some points out of the next two games.

@Peckhamlad: @Peckhamlad: Agree with you Peckhamlad- they may work well together. Just because we've bought a player of similar position, doesn't mean we have to get rid of what we already have. Nothing wrong with a bit of depth in the team as we're not exactly inundated with attacking midfielders! But it does come down to what Trotter wants to do and what Ollies plans are. Time will tell..... COYL

In fairness to Trotts the last 18 months have not been a walk in the park for the Lions.

The last year under KJ was pretty grim - especially after Wood left.

However, people like Trotts have been part of the problem - not the solution.

Let's see how he responds in the next 6 matches. I think you need cover for each position. Quality competition for his place may be just what he needs. It certainly has brought the best out of Dunney in the past.

Good signing. We've actually spent money (hoorah) on a player and he gives us a different option in midfield. Personally, I think we should sell Trotter now. He clearly doesn't want to sign and it's better to get maybe 500k now than nothing in the summer. This signing probably marks the end of Wright, too (thank god). Now we need a winger and maybe a center half as well as signing up Lowry and Fordey for another few years.

Not seen much of this guy to be honest but I'm hearing really good things from MK Dons fans! Definitely a replacement for Trotter - wouldn't be surprised if Trotter found himself on the bench quite a bit for the rest of the season because its clear he doesnt want to play for us and if I'm brutally honest he's very overrated! leading star in league 1 - lazy luxury player in the championship - I remember towards the end of last season seeing him stroll around the pitch like our poor form was nothing to do with him - very arrogant and if he doesnt want to work for the shirt he can jog on

    Welcome Shaun Williams!!

@TheBermondseyBomber: I cannot agree with you about Trotter, he is a very creative player with a football brain, not a wild hoofer of the ball. He obviously did not fit on the system that lomas introduced of long balls from the back. I am positive that IH will get the best out of him because Trotter loves to go forward, With DJ and Fredericks attacking as well they will cause havoc to the opposition. The next 3 games will tell and we must get in a winning groove.

@TheBermondseyBomber: Bomber I am not Trotter's biggest fan (because I think he has it all but IMO does not seem to bother) but I fully agree with your comments and if Ollie can get him to produce what I am sure he is capable of then he can help us and if he wants away like some think he does. Then a change in form can only help him if thats what he wants. and its a win win for Millwall.

I agree that Trotter is a very important player for us, but can't help but feel that he has gone a bit stale and probably needs a change even if it is just for his own benefit. I only think he would stay if Ollie can get him re-energised and start the develop his game for the fast paced tactics he has in mind. To be honest, I am not sure that style would suit Trotter the way he is currently playing though.

I love the fact that holloway can put Charlie Adam in the same sentence as xavi and iniesta, legend. Hopefully williams can provide that spark that has been missing down at wall. I like trotter, but if he dont want to sign up then get rid... obviously one of tge problems that kj spoke of when he left. 3 points needed tomorrow.

Great to see the Chairman backing his manager and signing what a appears to be a quality player (although I know nothing about him).
Lot's of speculation on here about Trotter. Haven't heard any clubs interested in him.
My view on Trotter is that on his day, he is quite brilliant .However those days seem to be few and far between.
Personally, if he isn't excited about what's happening and a club comes in and is willing to offer us £500K - 750K I would sell him. No question he has the quality to play at the highest level, but don't think he has the commitment or drive to achieve this.
If he does go, don't be surprised to see him back in league 1 in a couple of seasons.
Liam Trotter, he runs when he wants.........

@Jim28: I personally would like to keep Trotter, he has shown some lovely touches and laid on a few goals. I don't know if he is lazy or not he is a difficult guy to fathom out.
He needs to up his input as he can go missing for large portions of the game. He also needs to assert himself more utilising his height and weight. If Ollie can can more out of him we will have one tasty player.
BUT he has been dragging his feet over a new contract for so long that I like many others on here are resigned to him leaving and I would rather we get something for him now then let a rival get him for nothing in the summer.

"I see him as an Iniesta, Xavi or a Charlie Adam." No disrespect to Shaun Williams, but I'd have preferred it if we had signed one (or more) of the others!!!! Anyway, good luck to Shaun.

Re Trotter: I can understand people criticising his work rate at times, but he's arguably our most skilful player so, personally, I think it will be a real shame if he is allowed to leave.

Seems to me ,if none of us have seen the new fella play. ( I certainly haven't, ) then we can't possibly know wheather he should play in midfield with trotter or whoever. For example , what if he's another trotter, good on the ball, but don't bother tracking and tackling. Would not want them side by side .Let's see what game he plays and if he can step up to this level.

I think you gotta forget about all this talk of the play offs, cos it ain't happening, just be happy that we keep in this division, we were on the brink of going down three weeks ago , it's not lack of ambition, that's for next season, there's a lot of good teams in this division, and we are well back, so be realistic, cos I've noticed the teams below us seemed to have improved a bit too. So forget play off's , your getting carried away, and you'll end up disappointed .

      I agree with that.
If you could guarantee me 4th from bottom finish right now I would take it. All about surviving this season for me too.
      Optimistic but realistic with it.
The re building could then start in earnest in the summer.

@bordersarebest0170: Totally agree, staying in this league is paramount. We can then kick on next season after a few more summer signings coming in. Without being too dramatic I think tomorrow is a must win but Wednesday are no mugs so another Ipswich type performance needed. Good luck to DJ and Williams on their debuts, COYL

@bordersarebest0170: We are still in danger of going down so must not be complacent about it. All talk of Trotter leaving is pure speculation, it could be Jimmy. Robinson, Chaplow or Uncle Tom Cobblers!

@Peckhamlad: I agree peckhamlad theres to much speculation regarding trotter.he is a prized asset.and still has a future at millwall.and some of the others who are perhaps not up to putting in performances worthy will be the ones to go.only ian Holloway knows.

The third round of the f a cup, exactly two years ago, I'm in the car , radio on listening to football reports, q p r ( premier under mark Hughes ) beat m k dons 1 -0. The reporter in his report absolutely raving over dons centre back, " he's fantastic, keeping rangers out single handed, bringing the ball into midfield, etc etc, it wrote his name on a scrap of paper so I could google him when I got home, I'm thinking come on jacket, have a look at him. His name----- you guessed it. Shaun Williams . Funny eh.

Why do people think Trotter will be leaving ,who wants him and is one of our best forward players ,ih is taking us forward letting him go don't seem like a good thing to me ! Just my opinion.

@nuffsaid: I don't think most of us want him to go but he is out of contract at the end of the season despite a contract being on the table for a while, he's one of the few players who could command a reasonable fee which might free up some more money for IH. I personally would love him to stay, stay injury free and become the player we all know he can be - consistently!

If he reaches his potential he could end up being another alex rea his energy and eagerness for the ball will be a breath of fresh air. We havent really had a player like that since we let rea go.
Will be interesting to see if he starts tomorrow and if so in place of who ? Ollie has already said the ballance of youth and experiance is completely wrong with too many senior pro's in the squad, and does it mean morison will be on the bench now we have a manager who wants to play football instead of hoofball cause I cant see with DJ signing where moro would fit in, ollie wants to play 4-3-3 moro better suited to 4-4-2. I'd play mcdonald DJ and martin with williams bailey and trotter behind them. Of course just my oppinion.

I have not been in country for a while, so thought I'd go to watch at the training ground today (mon), and the change in 1 month is unbelievable. I've never seen players play 'keep ball' so passionately! I saw Jimmy sliding in, showing the gaffer, he still wants that centre mid place! All the players look so much sharper already. Holloway had them passing it about, overlappers everywhere, I nearly shouted 'alleluyah' from the sidelines! So refreshing to watch.

I have not mentioned my delight yet at the appointment of Holloway on this site! So happy for the club, and all the supporters. Thanks you Board!! I never slated off Lomas, I wanted him to do well, but sometimes things happen in life for a reason, and for us to get Holloway, is an absolute blessing. I don't think many people actually understand how lucky we are! I have waited so many years to watch an educated, patient team pass the ball about, and every season I have been left so frustrated but still supported the club fully.

I've never been so excited for the club! People think the game is a game of luck, (which helps) but technique, class, and a footballing brain always overtakes everything. I backed Spain to win the World and euro's 4 years before they won it, because they play the right way, and I knew it. Why over complicate such a simple beautiful game? Pass and move, pass it into the net, never ever give the ball away when a simple pass is on. I think England needs to seriously change its grass roots, and players as young as possible should play with a tennis ball, and play with both feet, until they have the skills necessary to progress to a larger ball. I feel embarrassed to watch England, when I know exactly why they are losing. Pulis recently said a comment at Palace, that "possession is not everything, it's what you do with it that counts." Unfortunately for Palace (sweet for us) he is very much mistaken, and eventually he will be found out. He is still a good manager in terms of shape and strategy but you will see in 3 years, where Millwall will be and where Palace will be. If you evaluate possession over the whole season, say you have the ball for 15 minutes extra per game against your opponents thats 690 mins extra per season(11.5 hours), now lets see what the opponents can do without the ball now for 11.5 hours a season? Keeping the ball is everything. This country needs to wake up fast.

Welcome to our club Ollie, time to illuminate, and spread your magic. The only other additions I would make, would give the boys, some Neuro Linguistic Programming coaching, and some Chi breathing techniques, to breathe to the abdomen, to transform their fitness, as I see most breathing to their throats but now I'm going really deep!! Knowledge is power-Infinite Consciousness.

@Alexdangelo: passionate summary alex, yeh it's a really great feel at the moment and things pointed in the right direction. I found the "chi breathing techniques" interesting, I normally employ those sort of tactics just before slamming down a yard glass of beer or other fun pre match activities! Needless to say I haven't had to keep possession of the ball much in the last 20 odd years. Let's sings some songs "real loud" get on it and win!!! Cheers mate, good read!!!

Sorry Alexdanglo but I don’t like Spanish and Italian football – it’s so boring! Yes they have loads of skill and clever moves and they pass, pass, pass, for hours but the English game has passion and surprises. Maybe I’m a dinosaur having watched the likes of the all white lions.
