Campbell reunited with Holloway after sealing Millwall move

MILLWALL have signed DJ Campbell on loan from Blackburn Rovers.

The 32-year-old has joined the Lions until the end of the season and is set to link up with his new teammates at their winter training camp in Portugal.

Campbell, who has also played for Birmingham, Leicester City and QPR, was a pivotal figure in Holloway's Blackpool team which won promotion to the Premier League in 2010.

The pacey striker is currently out on bail, without charge, after being arrested in connection with spot-fixing allegations.

Chief executive Andy Ambler said: "The manager has worked with DJ before and believes he will strengthen our squad."

Rovers boss Gary Bowyer added: "DJ has found his chances limited and at this stage of his career he needs to be playing games.

"The attraction of Millwall for DJ is that he can go back to London, where his family are from and he'll be reunited with Ian Holloway. The pair have a lot of time for each other.

"Both parties felt that it was the right move and it will be good for him to get some games under his belt."

Proven goalscorer with pace and a different type of striker from what we have. Also done good work with Ollie at Blackpool. Pleased with this one (as long as we're not paying the bulk of his ridiculous wages)

Good addition to the squad can never have too many strikers. After signs of tightening up at the back in the last two games, hopefully the goals will now start to flow.

How much of his £26000 per week is down to us?? I must say we do like to sail close to the wind!!
Let's hope whatever percentage we do have to fork out the lad makes it worth our while, wonder whether the charge hanging over him will affect his demeanour and attitude?

Ollie is doing what he can short-term to keep us in the Championship. If he can get around 8-10 goals he will be a good signing.Do not forget our leading scorer has 4 goals?

@Longfield Lion: At £26k a week we should expect at least 8 goals till the end of the season at this level. Unfortunately, he's never been a proloific scorer and seems to be living off his one decent season in the Premier with Blackpool. I really hope Blackburn are paying most of his wages.

@Lincolnshire Lion: Not sure where you got that figure? Even counting his non-league days his goals per game is much lower than that.

He obviously wasn't a bad player, but I've got serious concerns about spending so much on a player who's coming to the end of their career & hasn't exactly been on fire the past few years.

Good to get a striker with a bit of pace, from the number of goals our strikers have scored this season another option was needed and Ollie has acted quickly to get the player that he feels will do a job for us.

As I said on here yesterday, we don't need to concerned ourselves about cost, berylson is a brilliant buisinessman and if he says it's ok then it's ok. And if d j's goals keep us up in the way wood's did last year, then it's a lot cheaper than going down. And remember all our strikers couldn't score in a whore house. I for one like this one

With what players are available at the minute DJ could be best of a very limited bunch. At 32 he's still rapid though and could be a decent foil for either Morro or McD. Cant see Easter, Keogh or Marquis getting ahead of those three. Although to be fair I thought Keogh was superb on Saturday.

@bermlion: Got to agree with you Jim ... would love 15K, but if we get another 12000-12500 as per the Ipswich game, then let's not grumble eh? After all that is a 25% increase over our average! Like I said on another post, I've been a supporter since the Mickey Purser days (chairman, late 60's early 70's, manager at the time the LEGENDARY Benny Fenton, for those that don't know). I can tell all of you who maybe don't realise that since Purser we haven't had a chairman as good as JB. Not by a million miles. There have been some that were well intentioned but had no charisma, and certainly didn't pump the wonga that he has into the club. As for Ollie, well he has got all the potential to be up there with KJ, BF, The Doc and (got give him credit, he did bring us success after all) George Graham. I can't remember seeing on here for a long, long time comments that includes the word "excited", put up by so many posters and contributors.

Exciting times ahead ... oops, there's that word again. 🙂

My doubts about this signing is that IH has already gone on record as saying we have too many senior professionals at the club and here we are signing a 32 year old! I would have preferred someone younger but at least it is only until the end of the season and if he keeps us up the he has done the job he has been paid to do.

A good short term move to help us score more goals and start to move up and away from the relegation zone. If the club is picking up the majority of Campbell's wage then it just goes to show how commited and ivlaubale John Berylson is to the club.

I for one do not want Gianni Paladini anywhere near the club if indeed he is looking to buy out JB's majority shareholdings. He would set us back years of steady club progress (limited I know but far better than before KJ arrived and we look set to push on to greater heights with IH) Given his past debacle of QPR we can put him in the same bracket as Peter de Savary and Graham Ferguson Lacy, complete clowns who run businesses like expensive toys with no emotional attachment. Remember when JB grew tired of GFL and gave fans an ultimatum it was either Him or GFL... Berylson won that fight no contest!

I for one am so glad JB is still here with us, the best and most likeable chairman we have ever had. He is honest, open and straightforward talking and in his word "shoots from the hip kind of guy". I hope JB and the rest of Berlyson family continual stay closely associated and involved with Millwall at all levels for many many years to come... Oh and if you are wondering what ever happen to GFL after that crushing defeat at that hands of Berylson and the fans... http://www.manxradio.com/newsread.aspx?id=67675 - A lucky escape on our part, NEVER DOUBT JB!

similar player to Easter really, although makes better runs - I think Blackburn might have been playing him in the wrong way - I think he will work okay off Morison - he comes across as a bit arrogant on the field (what we need at the moment upfront) Plus won't need to be trained in Holloway's ways - he know them inside out

Ollie's approach reminds me of KJ's early days.

He brought in O'Hara, Corcoran and Simpson.

They were the tempoaray bedrock that kept us up and got the Lions ready for the promotion challenge the following season - along with some perm deals like Fordey.

Yes - it might cost a bit but it's short term and is nothing compared to losing the Lions' status in the Championship. Fredericks signing has gained us 2 if not 3 points.

I'll support Ollie on this one.

From what I saw on Saturday the front line needs a challenge. Let's see who's really up for it.

Reckon it's a good acquisition, not bothered about his wage as it's JBs problem but at least he's putting his money where his mouth is.
No brainer for me as it pushes mcd moro keoghe easter and maybe marquis another 15/20 %. He offers what we haven't got as he plays on the last defender. It's also refreshing that he makes a point of celebrating most of his goals with the fans unlike some we have. Could be just the tonic to keep us safe.
bit controversial but at times like this that could be a good thing. He'll also offer something to Alfie Pavey and Aiden O'brien. He also fits nicely into the system ollie wants us to play.

Bad move. He won’t be bothered about being proud to wear the badge (that Ollie goes on about) just what’s in his pay packet. How will this affect the other team members coming in on a high salary (even if it’s far less than what he is on now)? Does this mean Morrison or McDonald on way out? He is not a Millwall player - hope I am proved wrong.

@MFC Lion: Agree that Morrison is a Leeds player and has not performed as expected but we have him until the end of the season and if he is fed well he may come good. Think we should have still gone after Kane or Wood, try on-loan again. They are young and want to prove how good they are. DJ has been there, worn the tee-shirt etc and think that he may give us one or two good games but at 32 thinking about the money more.

@corunna17: Blackburn are not a premier team anymore, I think 6 or 7th in league. He is not even regularly playing for them so is he really that good anymore? The likes of Wood, Kane or even Waghorn are young players and the clubs they come from have an excess of talent that's why they don't play so regularly.

@Jim28: The fact was that he was banging in the goals for us and think with Ollies team play he would blend in well. I really hope the same with DJ but will he show commitment knowing he is only here until the end of the season?

I cannot thank JB enough, because he has brought in a good manager who has lifted the team and will weed out the problems and don't you feel that Wall is going places now, not down as with that w****r Lomas.

I can see both sides of this, on the upside he isn't marlon king and he gave us a torrid time when he was on loan at Ipswich last season, he's one of those players that I always expect to score against us so let's hope he can notch a few .

@Barnylion: ONLY £16,000 how easy you said that, remember this is Millwall but if he get the goals which he is more than capable of at this level and he puts another 750 on the gate then he will be worth it.

The higher we can achive in the league then hopefully with the new man at the helm the better class of player we can attract in the future.

Think DJ will be a good signing for us, was a bit gutted last season when he went ipswich as i thought we needed a player like him, quick, holds the ball up well and scores, welcome aboard DJ as for the bad media worries, well that's a joke in itself, since when have we ever been bothered about what people think, Holloway has backed this bloke regarding the match fixing saying he dont believe a word of it, that's good enough for me

I couldn't care less about how much he earns or how much of it we are paying him, strikers in the championship do not come cheap so its either pay up or stick with what we got and as hard as Holloway got the forwards to work on Saturday, only Martin looked like he was going to score (Should have scored but that's a different issue). If Campbell comes in and scores 6-10 goals between now and the end of the season, he'll have done his job, we most likely will be safe and all will be forgotten about his wages.

My concerns on this this deal are his age and the fact it's another loan deal. If you look at our strikers at the moment: DJ Campbell - 32, Morison - 30, McDonald - 30, Easter - 32, Keogh - 27, Marquis - 21, Marquis aside the rest are too old, you could argue Keogh is in his 'prime' but if this is his prime then we might as well get rid now as he hasn't scored (granted he hasn't played) for ages! Unless Holloway is just hoping these guys can see us over the dreaded dotted line in April and shift them out and rebuild I fear for us long term. Also it concerns me that we seem to be putting our faith in 2 strikers who aren't actually ours? I appreciate that we don't have the resources to pay big fees for players but it would be nice for us to actually go out and buy a striker who isn't on a free, someone who will actually care about the club as he is under contract and someone we wouldn't risk losing if he turns out to be decent i.e Chris Wood.

I believe Holloway knows exactly what he's doing and I think all of us back him 100% but there's a hell of a lot that needs to happen for his plan (what it appears to be) to come off and this summer could be one of the busiest we've ever seen!

      @spj91: valid concerns SPJ.

But let's face it, neither would be in their respective teams on any given Saturday.

Maybe holloway is using the loan system and will build once able to have a clear out in the summer.

I think this is a stop gap as there aren't too many strikers available for loan at this time who are within our budget.

This could be a master stroke or a disaster, only time will tell.

All we can do is back whoever is in the shirt and see what happens.

@Dazi: after the abuse he got when he left I doubt there is any chance of him ever wanting to come back to our club. He did s*** on us though, but now we are having the last laugh as once again he is at another team where he can't even get in the squad. Shame cos he could have been a very important player for our club, would have saved us wasting money on hulse, Afobe, Tyson, Morison and McDonald so wouldn't have been so expensive for job after all.

    DJ Campbell welcome to Millwall.
Ollie has taken a leap of faith with you, let's hope you repay him, AA, JB and the fans with goals, goals and more goals.
Please can you have your impending appearance deferred until after the 3rd May for personal reasons i.e. Millwall!

Forget for one minute whether we want DJC or whether we can afford his wages.

Behind this we see a chairman backing his managers judgement with his own money.

For me that says more for JB than any other chairman I can remember.

    Top man!

I cant see him coming to just pick up a wage as ollie has said far too many times he aint interested in anyone who wants a free ride, it just wouldnt make sense. He wants people to believe in his philosophy and having worked with each other DJ more than knows what's expected of him.
he certainly wont be going for anymore strikers and wouldnt be surprised to see a center mid and a center half coming in. Will move a couple out on loan as well.

Holloway's opinion is the only one that matters. He knows what DJ is all about and knows whether or not he fits into his plan for the future of Millwall. And by the signs of things, he's only in those plans short term i.e. to keep us up. And I for one am more than happy if he does just that. I also feel that a clear out is needed to pay for DJ's wages. We can easily offload a RB, considering we have 4! And now I feel we can get rid of one of the strikers. We have a healthy sized squad now and I know it's early days, but safety is certainly on the cards. Can't wait for the next couple of home games!

It's pointless people coming on here saying they want wood / Kane etc, cos they are probably not available, also wood has been injured for quite a while so no where near up to fitness and Kane got on as sub for spurs recently so probably wouldn't release him ,Ollie's worked with d j before and knows him, and he's available , and as I said earlier if his goals keep us up , then he's cheap

With regards to his wages, I would expect that we are paying some but not all. Our strikers dont score enough goals, fact, even though we seem to have lots of attempts, so good luck DJ, make a name for yourself. I am sure Ollie knows what he can get from him, and what he gets from players like Keogh and McD/Morison. Only time will tell whether this is good business but it can't be worse than we what we have.

Good signing here, and it will show the rest of the forward players that they need to show some heart and passion and start getting goals. DJ is a good player and scores goal, plus he and IH have worked together before.
IH is not a fool and he knows what needs to be done here at Millwall to keep us up and going. hopefully after this training camp the players get fit and learn on how to work as a team and play for eachother.

I think another 3 points against Sheff Wednesday and i wouldn't be surprised if DJ got a goal, he has a pint to prove himself now.

However i would like to see Feeney and Wright leave this window.

Some good points raised but for me there is now only one objective this season and that is enough points to guarantee Championship football next season. If he scores the goals to achieve that then he is worth every penny. Once achieved, the IH revolution can begin.

The signing of DJ cannot be argued with, many on here have been calling for another striker and now we have a good one. According to sky he signed for a year and other signings are in the pipeline. Look at the difference in the signings of Holloway and Lomas. not only that he has got the team club and fans buzzing. Well done JB dont succumb to the vultures currently eyeing Millwall.

A proven goal scorer also known by Ian Holloway, but I don't think we should be employing footballers who have been charged with match fixing, I would find it difficult cheering on such a guy even if not as yet proved guilty. If guilty he should be banned from football and convicted of match fixing and fraud. If not ok, but I would rather us in the meantime go with the forwards we have and if we can afford it get someone in who isn't tarnished by something that brings the game totally into disrepute. Come on your Lions and best wishes to Ian Holloway, but Im not really happy with this one even if he does score us goals, it doesn't seem right

Thanks Jim your right, not charged as yet, arrested and bailed until April pending further investigations, for a booking I understand. We've had plenty of bookings this season already, and could well do with more goals instead! Anyway lets hope we stay up, whoever scores them between now and April! We did look a lot better against Ipswich, be interesting to see how the team pans out over the next few weeks, but looks promising already now under Holloway:)
