Player left behind as Millwall head to winter training camp

IAN Holloway has left a player out of Millwall's trip to Portugal for their winter training camp because of poor fitness.

The Lions squad fly to the Algarve today for a week of triple sessions and intense running as Holloway bids to improve energy levels.

But Millwall's new boss has ordered one senior professional to remain in London because he is too far off the pace.

Those who are on the plane will fly from Gatwick to Faro Airport this afternoon.

"I've had to leave one behind because he needs to get a damn sight fitter," said Holloway.

Of the club's younger players, only John Marquis will travel to the continent.

"I can't take any of the U21s," Holloway said. "Marquis is going.

"I owe it to the other lot, who are under contract, to try to get them doing what I want, and for them to show me that they can respond to me.

"But I've seen enough in the U21s, let me tell you. The first team better watch out because some of the youngsters have impressed me immensely."

Perhaps that's a way of saying this player is leaving this transfer window? Holloway isn't going to carry anyone so I wouldn't be surprised if we see a departure this week.

I think this trip is exactly what the squad needs, for 80/85 minutes yesterday the team was fantastic and gave everything but were completely shattered. A fitness 'camp' should work wonders for all of the players. Lets just hope no one comes back injured!

Holloway yesterday got the pride back into Millwall FC.He got the players working their socks off.He will not stand for any shirkers and it will be goodbye to any of them.Things will only get better if we build on yesterdays performance. What did show yesterday was our lack of a killer punch and somebody to get on the end of the chances made.
    Well done Ollie.

We'll if it is Hoyle, as some of you suggest, how come we signed him a week before holloway came, and when we had no manager.

@bordersarebest0170: That was my point two weeks ago. At least now we've got a manager who isn't going to waste time having a weed-out. If it is Hoyte, he hasn't exactly done anyone any favours. Currently, he can't play for us, isn't of any use to anyone else and is looking at a 2yr contract where the ink isn't even dry.

@TheBermondseyBomber: I'll wait to see the official photos from the camp and use a process of elimination. Whoever it is, is unlikely to figure in future plans and Ollie is on record as saying some of the older pros may have to go to get the balance right. Can't be anyone in the squad yesterday so that leaves Dunne, Chaplow, Smith or Hoyte by my reckoning.

It's appalling that a well paid professional with nothing else to do but get fit allows themselves to get so, it speak volumes about their attitude.

Get Hurlock in to run a boot camp for the lazy lot.

I think all the talk about Shittu being overweight is wrong. Yes he is a big f***ing lump but his shoulder are so huge it makes him look fat. Terry Hurlock was the same but I don't recall anyone calling him fat. If anything I think Bailey looks like he is carrying a bit of extra weight.
Just my opinion before I get slaughtered.

After the Southend disgrace I waited till the ground was empty, watched bombers interview with deeno standing, then left via the back of the main stand, there's all our players on the coach getting stuck into pizzas, and on their phones like they couldn't give a s***, since when was junk food like pizzas good for sportsman, cos they were all on em, lowery 3 great big bits while I stood watching, no wonder they are fat and unfit.

@Sealion: Well to do that you want to eat slow release carbs (like wholemeal pasta). Pizza is full of saturated fat, which is the last thing a professional sportsman should be eating as part of his recovery

@junkmale: Slow release is as the name suggests, they are the sort of carbs you would eat several hours before to give you energy for the activity, fast release carbs ie sugars and fats give you the boost when your levels have dropped and require replenishing fairly quickly. IMO

Looks like it's Chaplow that's been left behind but it's due to an injury he picked up at Huddersfield - so of course he's behind the rest of the squad at the moment with a dodgy hamstring but I wouldn't read too much into it can't see us getting rid of him with Trotter pretty much on his way!

Who they flying with Ryanair? It does not matter who has been left behind, serves them right if they cannot take their job seriously. There is speculation that IH is interested in signing D.J.Campbell on loan. Forget his history is a tough nut up front.

The team deserve the traing break after their efforts yesterday and will come back a lean hungry side that will do us proud. Those who fall by the wayside may have their places taken by the likes of Fred.
Can't wait for next home game which i shall break my bank to go see.

From the photos Bailey looked the most out of condition and he was subbed at 60 minutes, which says a lot, so I wouldn't be surprised if he was the one left out.
I don't think Shittu is massively overweight - he is just a big framed guy.

Holloway wouldn't start/ put a fat player on the bench so rule out the 18 yesterday, my guess would be Chaplow or Hoyte. Chaplow isn't going to Portugal because of a injury so it might just be a cover up and Bailey is defo going as his wife tweeted getting Nicky ready for Portugal.

I find it incredibly some of the names mentioned on here and reasons as to why?!?!

Lowry & Shittu - If anyone thinks its one of them two then you need your head testing, their performances yesterday were outstanding and Holloway praised the pair of them after the game.
Robinson & Bailey are both in photos on twitter at the airport so clearly they are going.
Alan Dunne posted on his facebook this morning 'off to Portugal for a few days' etc so He's going.

As many people have pointed out, the two players who more than likely have been left behind are Hoyte & Chaplow. For me it's Chaplow, he hasn't been the same player since that injury he picked up at the back end of last season, in and out of the side constantly and his twitter would suggest he wasn't checking in at an airport this morning.

Hoyte just like the other members of the squad will be given a chance to prove themselves this week. Although I wouldn't be surprised if he and/or Jack Smith are loaned out in the near future as Holloway is going to pick Fredericks for the duration of his loan spell.

Assuming they don't also have an injury how can someone be so unfit (especially a professional footballer) that they are unable to go on a training trip?!

I would have thought they would be the priority to go and if they have to stop during a session because they're knackered to catch their breath then they stop.

How is staying at home going to help improve them?

My thinking is Ollie has already decided whoever it is has a p*** poor attitude and he's going to be getting rid of whoever it is anyway.

What's the news on Ffordie? Didn't like the way he asked to be subbed straight away. Thought the save from Bywater was good to keep us the points. Can't wait for the Wednesday game!

Whoever it is I personally would of thought 5 days of intensive training is exactly the sort of thing he would need.
What's he going to do hear with all the club staff gone to Portugal?
Maybe the tea lady can use the stopwatch on him while he jogs around the training ground on his phone.
    Very odd to me.

It's probably Chaplow, the injury is just the excuse, not that it really matters, it is the squad that has gone which is important and how fit they are when they return. They look really happy in the pics, its good for the spirit and team building as well. Expect a few might find time for a round of golf on the Algarve?

@Rchap04: Just to confirm, I've not been left behind because I'm unfit (lungs wise) or because I'm overweight (8/9% body fat) i have a torn calf

@lukesmithmfc: all very well about chaplow but he is a always injured - never plays more than 3/4/ games back to back and thus can't be considered anything other than a squad player - I am not sure of his long term future under holloway

But who knows he may even prove to be the player we thought he was last season. I mean lets face it none of em could be bothered under the last regime and and they obviously took the fatness coach for the joke he was, how many picked up training ground injuries ?
Ollies gone back to basics with em, be fit to play not play to get fit.

I think the article has been poorly worded and has caused some confusion. It sounds as if the player was left behind because his fitness is way below par when actually he's been left behind because of the injury. Due to being injured he will not be able to keep up with the pace of the training holloway got planned. Holloway has already stated it's not a holiday. If someone's been left behind due to the plan all I can say is thank god I'm not on that plane, I'll just enjoy me pizza n beer on me sofa

        I thought he said the following according to your article;

"I've had to leave one behind because he needs to get a damn sight fitter,"

It has a different ring to it, hence the comments and interest by people on here as to who it is.

The only way a torn calf / hamstring , etc can heal is treatment and rest. Players with these type of Injurys can't do the kind of training holloways talking about till they are over the injury, so no point in going.

@Jim28- You read my post from earlier, where you gave 'your' opinion on the Terry Hurlock Danny Shittu comparison that I made.
Where in that post did I ever mention or compare both players in any way apart from their build? I do agree, Hurlock did always run his socks off and would have put all the current squad to shame on that front alone. To say I should be ashamed of myself for comparing those two players is a tad unwise. And for the record the very same Terry Hurlock is my all time favourite Millwall player.
Maybe you should read a bit slower so you take the correct information onboard.

What impresses me is Holloway's comments about the under-21s. He's obviously already had a good look and likes what he sees and the sooner we can secure our Championship status the quicker he'll be giving them some first team experience and we can really start building for a bright future.

Holloway's comments about the under-21 squad is just to gee up the senior players to get them believing their futures are in doubt. How many players do we bring though our youth squads to make first team players? Since the Cahill/Reid era we've produced virtually nothing because we don't invest and the talent in our catchment area gets cobbled up by other teams. Marquis, for instance, isn't good enough for this level.

Chaplow is injured. He is not the unfit player, that is hoyte. Therefore it is hoyte who's been left out the squad for being unfit.

well if it is hoyte, what a f****** disgrace he is, already i don't wanna see him in a millwall shirt, cos we can clearly see what his attitude is, he should be ashamed of himself and grosely embarassed, but i bet he's not,i bet he feels hard done by. he should go and sit on lomas's sofa and keep him company. to think he played for us recently and couldn't even be bothered to keep himself in decent shape. no wonder we are where we are with idiots like this in the club.

Pizza is very common as a after match meal - remember the Man Utd / Arsenal game when the pizza was lobbed at Fergie. No issues there. Does anyone know if Hoyte went ? I guess he wouldnt have needed a medical as the deal was tied up in November and it was just a matter of registering it with the FA on the 1st/2nd January. Was told that neither him or Millwall wanted it to go through but Middlesboro forced the issue which they were within their right to do. Hope Chaplow can get over his injury soon and then catch up with the rest of the squad fitness wise as there is still a very good player in there. DJ Campbell to sign soon and join the squad in Portugal a bit

the sooner they can play proper football.
injury is no excuse for lack of fitness.

YOU KNOW, IT " BEGGARS - BELIEF " HOW THIS MANY PLAYERS COULD GET
AWAY WITH NOT BEING NEAR THE FITNESS LEVEL THAT IT REQUIRED BY A
    CHAMPIONSHIP CLUB FOOTBALL PLAYER...........................
WHAT ON EARTH WERE THOSE TRAINERS DOING ? ALL WE SEEM TO SEE WAS
WHAT I HAVE ALREADY MENTION IN A PREVIOUS POST, ABOUT PLAYERS PRE - MATCH
RUNNING APPROX 40YDS, WITH CONES AND STICKS IN THE TRAINING SET - UP AREA.
[ AND THEN THE RESERVES AT HALF TIME, COMING OUT AND DOING FANCY - TRICKS
    WITH THE FOOTBALL ]
JUST GLAD THAT IAN HOLLOWAY, HAS ARRIVED TO SORT IT OUT.
IF WE ALL WANTED TO SEE THAT......SURELY WE WOULD HAVE GONE TO BILLY SMARTS
    CIRCUS..................AND SEEN BALL JUGGLING.
" NO ONE LIKES US, WE DON'T CARE "
