Millwall boss encouraged despite losing first game at helm

IAN Holloway was encouraged by Millwall's display against Huddersfield Town despite suffering defeat in his first game in charge.

Record Terriers signing Nahki Wells struck a dramatic late winner on his debut to settle a tight encounter at the John Smith's Stadium.

But Holloway felt his new charges were worthy of a point and was largely pleased with their performance.

"I feel for the lads," he said. "I do not think they deserved that. We have come a long, long way in a short time after losing to Southend last weekend – and against a good side.

"Huddersfield's structure and shape is very awkward and very different, but I thought we coped with them well.

"That's only the second game I've seen these lads play – I watched the DVD of the Southend game and that's been it. I asked for certain things and all I can say is that I saw them, so I feel for the players. I'm proud of the group and how well they worked and fought."

Wells' winner came after Jack Smith flicked on Adam Clayton's pass towards his own goal.

"We didn't close them down at the right time," Holloway said. "We let someone play the ball forward in the last minute of the game, behind our defence, and if we're going to do that, then not every area of my time is functioning correctly.

"I don't blame the fella [Smith] who had to back peddle, I blame the people who didn't quite get there and I've got to teach them how to get there.

"It was a square ball to Clayton and he was given time to look up [and pick his pass]. He had far too long – you try to get there within four seconds. You don't, at that time of the game, allow your back four to come under that kind of pressure.

"There's not a lot of confidence but I saw all sorts of promising things. Unfortunately we got zero points but on that performance we deserved at least a draw.

"To be honest I was delighted with the effort and organisation."

Holloway reiterated that he is relishing the challenge of turning the Lions' fortunes around.

"I've got so much to do – it's fantastic," he added. "I've got to get my staff sorted, look at a training game we have planned for Tuesday and make quick decisions to bring people in to help if I can. First off I've got to see the rest of the squad play during the week.

"I'll introduce my regime of training, what time the players come into training every day and I'll up our tempo – people won't look so tired. We've got a home game next and I really can't wait for it. I'm full of pride and passion and so is this wonderful club.

"I've got to stop the rot and get some points but we ran Huddersfield very close – and they've been thumping people lately."

@harryfabian: Nice one Harry we need someone to bring a bit of levity into the proceedings mate, but Ollie must have seen today as we again slipped into our bad oldways (not being able to close a game out) thaqt there is Major root and branch work to do at the club, if we are ever to get back to being a half decent side once again.

This is a project and I hope we give him time and more importantly who dont crack up like he did at his last club, because if he left before we were in half decent shape I dread to think who would manage us then, but he has got a full week to get the players playing the way he wants before the Ipswich game when we can all help him by fully backing him and the team.

Seems Holloway has already spotted the weaknesses and knows how to put them right. he can't work miracles immediately and will build on the positives and get the team to build their confidence.
    The results will come.

There is a reason the midfield let their midfield lob the ball forward late in the game coz their too old & slow. We need younger players with pace.

if u listen to holloways report on lions player he knows what we need , IF THEY DONT GET NAKI WELLS THEY DONT WIN, he had one chance and scored, other then smiths mistake the defence was good, i think we need a striker more than anything, you cant keep defending all the game if your strikers aint scoring , morro and mac had good chances and didnt put them away , he has already asked jb why he didnt buy wood , and if you look when he was at palace he had success because he had glen murray 26 goals , i bet he makes a striker his first signing , wouldnt be shocked if we dont get wood back . its not rocket science last season we were top ten with wood , and the same defenders we have now , he goes and look at us now, the strikers we have aint done it for us, i think ollie is not stupid , if he is in contact with kj , he will know keogh and wood was the pair ,

@munson68: true Munson not everyone has to be a great footballer and I am not saying everyone has to go but we need those qualities from some players - did you see De laet's goal for Leicester - when would you see our full backs do that - adam smith could but not the current lot - we need more flexibility in our team - too many one dimensional players - when trotter plays his lack of pace and mobility makes it harder for other midfielders to link up and he ain't that good to be given a free role - players should be more interchangeable in their positions but as I say we have players who play their role and nothing else - abdou, feeney and all the defence apart from Malone - it makes us easy to play against - -we have limited options - that is what the new players have to bring -

we would of lost this game 4-0 if lomas was in charge. we still lost but already a vast improvement. we desperately need inspiration in midfield, someone that can control the ball, pass and go forward. it will only take a couple of games for ollie to suss out this team. we will be a different team in a couple of weeks........

Might end up like when we had Wood and the results gave the impression we were good before going to pieces when he left.

But this year were gona bring in some quality and have a great end to the season! ....... I hope.

I agree mate. We have proof Wood knows where the goal is. Lomas always played Waghorn too wide for us to find out what his goal scoring potential was, and we don't have the luxury of time or pots of money to find out.

Wood on loan would be great, but with Leicester being so close to promotion, I don't think they can risk letting anyone go out. Waghorn would be more realistic but again I'd imagine Leicester being quite stubborn over a fee.

As frustrating as it is and as much as it gives you the shits just keep lookin at the positive stuff, it's just a hard time at the moment and mayb now paying a price for sum average decisions in the past but if the club sticks at it ,it'll turn. IH seems like he,s got a handle on it , let him pick thru the squad and come up with the right formula. Keep movin forward!

Listen, everyone that I have taken to Millwall for the first time including my 3 kids, we always lose, it's a millwall initiation.

I didn't think we would win today but I was gutted in the manner of the defeat. A single error punished by a record signing. If that's not a wall headline this year I don't know what is.

IH has his work cut out with these players but I'm buying into what he has to say because he has experience, he has done this before. We have a talented squad with a few loose ends that need to be cut off. I really don't like picking out individual players but smith needs to go, he is not a full back, never has and never will be. He is a decent CM that is suited for league 1. He is not the only problem and we need to score goals but errors that lead to goals have to be stopped.

I have to disagree with most with Morison, he has quality and all he needs is confidence. IH can instill that in him and an in form Morison is not only better than our other strikers but can be one of the best strikers in the division.

    Onwards and upwards

No one likes us, we don't care.

Typical millwall we ain't played to the whistle since the last time we made championship play offs with mark maghee, however, none of us expected a win bit with 66% possession against to only lose by a single goal is a plus. With the other teams losing we have bought ourselves some time. We all trust holloway n although we lost its a massive improvement from the last 6 months

He played the team which would get us a draw..a point is better than nothing..THE MENTAL ONE didn't think we had acat in hells chance of anything...in a roundabout way. He told us as much in one of his many articles..when he said that it was a total lack of confidence..probably cos the thing drained it out of them...players have a lot back(apart from smith)..the coming week should be interesting cos we will be linked with everyone under the sun..my bet is will have at least one new boat at the den

IH been with the team 5 mins, and he can see the problem already. Sounds to me like he has a couple of players in mind to 'help him out' so next couple of weeks should be interesting. Hope there's a good crowd Saturday and a nice welcome for the man, followed by 3 points. COYL

@beedoscores: Yes, I can see at least four coming in. two attacking midfielders and two defenders. Hoyte, Connolly ( is he still there ) ? Feeney, Smith, Shittu,, Dunne and others will struggle and I think they'll be on their toes soon. Marquis should go back out on loan. Once he's seen the first team squad in full play against the under 21's on Tuesday, he'll have a much better idea. Maybe one of the youth players will impress. We'll need to ship out a few to balance the books.

I agree re Smith out of position but the only other option was to play Lowry at LB and clearly he wanted him to play in the centre. Don't agree he was solely responsible for the goal - at least as I saw it - we should have closed them down before they were able to play the ball through which is something we'd been successful with during he game. Early days and it might take a few games before Ollie can fully assess the squad. Was surprised that he played Shittu but agree with one of the other posts that he had a really good game and wasn't caught out like the last game at Huddersfield - let's not forget that Forde kept us in it in the first half. Not a lot came from the midfield in my view.

Quite right...if you put a lot of preseve on the back 4 any back 4 it will break..thats why most teams have either 2 lines of 4..or the midfield puts presure on there's..at least your 25yds from the box...we have played this way..blackpool at home..so why play different away...why invite teams onto you

It was a stroke of genius to make Danny Captain, He obviously relished the role and according to all accounts had an excellent game. Good for him and maybe those who always criticise him might give him a break. He has served the club well. Over the next couple of weeks am sure we will see a few new faces in the backroom to help IH and maybe a new forward. Liam Trotter has to come back to full fitness as well which will be make the midfield stronger. Still early days it's like a new season at Millwall but without the luxury of a break and only half a season left. IH is going to have to work miracles, but am confident he can do it.

I think IH has got it right when he blamed the goal on the failure to close down the passer of the final ball that led to smith's mistake, that is what we have failed to do in the past but it look's as though it is going to change in the future,so lazy mid-fielder's beware i dont think IH is going to stand for any idleness.
When ian rush played for liverpool he was known for defending from the front.what i mean by that is when the attack broke down he immediatly put pressure on their MF so as to make them hurry their passes which in many instance's would lead to them in turn making a mistake and giving the ball back to a liverpool player.
I think we are now going to see what player's want to put in a full shift without moaning.
I cant wait for the ipswich game,so come IH get those player,s working and if they dont want to or cannot then show them the door sooner rather than later.

The next eight matches could well determine our season.
Five matches at home - Ipswich,. Sheff Wed, Reading, Bolton and Brighton
Three matches away - Burnley, Yeovil, Barnsley

If IH gets another ten per cent out of the team - which lets face it is not going to be that difficult then I can see us beating Yeovil and Barnsley away from home SIX points in thee bag
With the home crowd acting as a twevlth man, I can see THIRTEEN points from the home matches.
Methinks that IH has arrived just in time to move us up the table pretty fast...
next two home matches could well build the confidence of the team...so lets get down to the Den, and show IH that he has our confidence.........

A big change I noticed Saturday was IH getting Jimmy Abdou to press higher up the field and have Bailey sit and spray it around. We lost our intensity when Trotter came on. I'm sure Ollie's learnt a lot from this narrow defeat as his tactics almost had an immediate effect. Onwards and upwards from now on. COYL

Here's a different way of looking at things. Holloway is a top quality acquisition for Millwall. At the beginning of the season he wasn't available plying his trade in the Premiership. Things didnt work out for him at Palace, things didn't work out for Lomas with Millwall. Sometimes things happen for a reason.
I think Holloway and Millwall are a perfect match. The timing was right. Give him some time , exercise some patience, trust him to do his job and stop fretting. Times are changing !!!

Malone's our left back, and pretty decent too, but don't agree with you lot, and will not jump on the bandwagon. Jack smith is a o k player, had no option but to put his head to that ball, just unfortunate where it went, he was part of a defence that everyone who saw it( including the manager) says played really well. Smith does a decent job wherever he's put, and i like him. The rest of you have had your say on him, and that's mine

@bordersarebest0170: Smith is not a championship quality player. He's adaptable. can play in more than one position but in all honesty he wouldn't make another championship's first team. Think so ? Let's ee him move on to another squad then.
I can't wait until the end of the season when I think the major clear-out will happen. Before that, a tweaking here and there. Shittu shouldn't be playing at this level either, despite his m.o.m at Huddersfield. Against championship forwards he's been embarrassed at this level time and time again and Huddersfield aint no Burnley, Leicester or QPR with all due respect. I watched the premiership games this weekend. Yes, I know it's the premiership, but has anyone noticed how the likes of Man City defend ? Two lines of four at the back when being pressured, and then all supporting each other when they've got the ball. All about confidence but also about having players who are in the first team based on merit not that they're Millwall through and through. I'm Millwall through and through but as much as I'd like to play, my skills don't translate to this level.
By August 2014, I really, really hope that half the current squad are gone. Then we can have a Holloway team. Not one inherited from Jackett or Lomas. Then, and only then with the comfort of having a manager who has experience at this level will we see a resurrgence of Millwall.

@NICKOLA: Sorry I do not share the sentiments of your post. We have the core of a good squad, not enough to take the team up but at least to keep us in the championship for the time being. There is no way Millwall can adopt the style of a premiership team, in this league. As for who should be in or out of the team, that is for Holloway's judgement and given time no doubt he will do it in his own way. The urgency now is to stop the run of poor results and keep Millwall in the championship which hopefully they can do. I good forward would work wonders.

@Peckhamlad: We may have the core of a good squad but what we don't have is pace, we are a single paced team, we are slow going forward and slow to defend. We need a couple of players who can inject that pace into a game, who can scare defenders and who can turn defence into attack very quickly just like what is done to us by every team we play.

Am I in the minority of 1 in thinking that Forde could have done better with the goal. The ball was in the air for a long time, and if he had come out rather than back peddle, he would have been right on top of the scorer rather than give him time to smoke a ciggie before putting it in the corner.
However, good to hear IH state that he now knows the characters he has in the dressing room, which should sound alarm bells for the players that think the club owes them something.

Lets be honest, the team players played better for IH then SL in recent games, we are showing improvement already, only conceding one goal rather then four is a start. IH will be looking at the players again tomorrow during the training match and I’m pretty sure he will know what direction to take to getting us out of danger. Now the players need to step up and give a little back to the fans and get a win on Saturday and start earning a honest wage.

yeah, a lot of these goals we are conceding are down to goalkeeping errors, but he pulls off really good saves in the same games as his mistakes,so he gets away with no blame, its easier to blame smith and co. also mc donald should have burried that one he hit the post with from the position he was in, all the strikers against us do,with a chance like that

Forde should of taken two steps forward as soon Smith headed it sky high. Wells actually struck the ball on the six yard line and was nowhere near favourite to get there first but Forde decided not to move. Goalkeepers fault in my book. I have always thought Forde is a fantastic shot stopper but his decision making is very poor.I still support him and know that he makes plenty of important saves for us. He has served us very well and I personally hope he gets his dream move to Celtic at the end of the season as I think it will be good for him and us.

Can you confirm or are my eyes on the way out?
      Cheers.

@wall2wall: He used to look like Tango Man in that orange kit.

The only thing I haven't seen McDonald do is, score plenty of goals or run up his own backside although, the latter is right up there!
