Report: Southend United 4-1 Millwall

TEN-MAN Millwall suffered a humiliating loss at the hands of Southend United in the third round of the FA Cup.

The Lions were already 1-0 down to Barry Corr's header when Jermaine Easter was shown a straight red card for an alleged stamp.

Will Atkinson added a second goal before half time and pitiful defending allowed Michael Timlin to score a third.

Martyn Woolford pulled one back for the visitors but there was still time for Ryan Leonard to score again in stoppage time.

Caretaker bosses Neil Harris and Scott Fitzgerald freshened the team up by starting Danny Shittu, Jermaine Easter and Lee Martin, but Millwall were lacklustre from the word go.

The Lions could have been 1-0 down after nine minutes when Anthony Straker, Michael Timlin and Barry Corr all had efforts cleared off the line in quick succession.

But Corr broke the deadlock when he rose unchallenged inside the six yard box to head in John White's cross.

A floodlight failure forced both sets of players off the field midway through the first half but the match resumed after a 17-minute delay.

Martin had Millwall's first effort on goal when he sprinted clear down the left wing and curled over from the corner of the area.

The visitors' afternoon went from bad to worse when Easter was given his marching orders for leaving in a foot on Coker as he jumped over the left-back's tackle.

And Southend made it 2-0 in first-half stoppage time when Atkinson exchanged passes with Corr and Timlin before dinking the ball over Forde.

White headed over from a corner when it looked easier to score in the 54th minute as the Shrimpers continued to dominate.

And after Nicky Bailey made a hash of clearing a simple cross into the box, the ball fell to Timlin whose shot went straight through Forde's arms.

Substitute Woolford pulled one back when he brought down Morison's cross with his chest and volleyed into the bottom corner.

But that goal did little to change the pattern of the game as Southend continued to create the better chances.

In the 68th minute, Forde made a fingertip save to keep out Ryan Leonard's 40-yard chip that looked to be creeping in under the bar.

Corr should have scored his second goal of the afternoon – and Southend's fourth – when he latched onto Straker's cross, but the striker headed against the post.

Leonard did add a fourth deep into six minutes of stoppage time to put the seal on an instantly forgettable afternoon.

We need a brave board to:
    a) appoint the managerial candidate brave enough to state relegation is a very real possibility but next season will see improvement in whatever tier.

    b) appoint the same managerial candidate brave enough to give homegrown players a chance and not get desperate with loans.

    c) appoint the same managerial candidate brave enough to confine egotistical players to the reserves.

    What will actually (probably) happen:
    a) a manager will be found who will use loanees. We will get relegated.

    b) we will struggle to attract any decent manager next season, and very very few players will have 2nd tier football experience.

    c) we will get through several managers over several seasons. We will be stuck in 3rd or 4th tier football for another 7 or 8 years.

    BREAK THE CYCLE. BE BRAVE!

ps, wasted chance today to give debuts to 14 players.

“A disaster and an embarrassment”, said a commentator on Player when we were 3-0 behind.
Aston Villa, Barnsley, Doncaster and Leeds also lost to lower league clubs today but not by 4-1, while Man City, Ipswich, Sheffield Wednesday, Watford and Wigan face replays with lower tier teams.
Has our trouble been the wrong manager this season, or is it some of the players?
But for us now, with this form, we need a manager who can save us from relegation.
Which available managers have (a) experience in charge of a Championship team, (b) a track record of success, and (c) won’t be unpopular with the fans because of his history?
Being practical, we should ignore (c), but I don’t know if any available (i.e. unemployed) manager would have both (a) and (b).
Perhaps there is someone with (a) and (b) who is currently with a lower league club, who Millwall could afford to poach.

We sure now how to drop our heads when we go a goal down. Never feels like we'll get back into a match.

Feel like I'm always making excuses for Millwall but it sounds like we were unlucky again with the sending off.

Anyway, I hope the board announce the new manager soon.

Steve Lomas was sacked amid rumours that certain players did not want to play for him. Now that Lomas has gone, those players have been exposed as not being good enough. The first job of the incoming manager should be to have a clear out and get players in who want to play for the shirt.
If both Jackett and Lomas had problems with certain players, then the new manager needs to get a grip of the situation and either get rid or bring in players of a decent quality who will show the current players up for the dross that they are.

I cant believe this would have happened under K.J. Sorry I know thats history but thats what I believe. Please do something fast J.B. another league game approaching fast and by christ you really have got to spend big money on a decent manager ( not one of the many has beens that are available) and some quality players and try and convince them somehow that you want this club to be a success. The clubs foundation are the supportes if you lose them the heart of the club dies. Players, Board, Managers are just personnel. Remember we are the paymaster not you.

We've amassed a group of players, most of which, are stealing a wage. They're Journeymen, players with no passion, players past their sell by date, and it's obvious they don't give a crap about the shirt they are wearing. As I said in an earlier post, it doesn't bode well for thee rest of the season, yet again we've shipped a load of goals, this time against a team two division below, showing just how awful players like Shittu, Smith and Dunne are. We've seen it time and time again this season and the whole squad needs a complete overhaul in the summer and clear out these wage thieves and players not up to the fast, whether that's in The Championship or League One, we need to get a proper direction and not reply on has beens no one else wants, players with no passion, or countless loans. Bring through our youth, get some players in from leagues below who will be future stars, that's what all the good clubs do, yet we take all the crappy cast offs who just come to thieve a wage. Unless there's a complete overhaul in the summer I will not be renewing my season ticket. I live near Southend, gonna half take some stick for this. It's a disgrace and an embarrassment.

Who, in their right minds, would want to manage us? We've a squad with some talented players who are just too lazy or disinterested to put in a 100% performance. Personally, I'm not bothered by the FA Cup but I am bothered by the lack of effort and number of sendings-off and the number of goals conceded and so on and so on - it gets rather boring after that. If JB really wants to commit to OUR club then he needs to do 2 things , imo. Firstly, appoint a manager with championship or even English league management experience. Secondly, put his hand in his pocket and give that experienced manager a decent enough budget to not only keep us in this division but to allow us to compete next season. Once these 2 things are in place, the rest will follow. After all, it's not rocket salad, is it?

@SingleWhiteLion: fair play for sticking by the team and continuing to go but personally I'm getting no enjoyment from attending games this season and knowing that my hard earned money goes towards paying these c**** wages means I won't be renewing next season unless there is a marked improvement for the remainder of the season.

I thought today might be a tricky fixture, but never dreamed we could take another hammering. It's possibly the worst result I can remember in over forty years - slaughtered by a team two divisions below us. Even Woking was only 1-0.

I can't help totally blaming Berylson and the board for the situation were in. I'd be happier if Berylson was honest and said we're a two-bob club and get what we deserve, rather than bigging-up the money he's apparently spent on players. The last three years have been woeful. We've assembled a team of mediocre rejects, put in countless spineless performances and even managed to alienate half the supporters. Most of us have even had our worthless Millwall shares robbed off us - and for what? So we carry on signing s*** free-transfer after s*** free-transfer.

Great result, wish it could have been 8-1 but 4-1 will do because it shows what needs to be done now. We have let in an average of over 2 goals per game in the 2nd division, so to let in 4 against a fourth division side (I'm old fashioned don't go in for all this re-branding b*******, this was a poor 2nd division side v a reasonable 4th division side). Harris doesn't want the job (just as well) so lets get an experienced 2nd division manager in (Warnock or Holloway) someone with a 2nd division track record = not Bircham, Claridge, or Harris and lets not make the same mistake as we did with Nichol and Lomas and appoint someone from the Mickey Mouse leagues which is the same as a 7th division team.....

Time to clear the decks, let those contracts due to expire actually go and don't renew. Harford needs to identify some lower league talent and players rejected from Prem Youth set up as they will actually have some desire to improve and succeed. I know some of our so called stars are meant to be good but they simply are not meeting minimum standards we expect at this club.

Most of our 1st team squad have contracts until the end of 2014/2015 season. We need to start planning ahead now. Renew/extend those that are worth it and get some of the youngsters signed up on 2-3 year deals this summer.
If we go down this season we'll lose Forde , Lowry , Malone , Bailey , Trotter , Morison , Easter and Mcdonald in my opinion.
Let's plan ahead now for f@ck sake.

Players sunk to a new low, just when you think they couldn't scrape the bottom of the barrel anymore they do this. Beginning to wonder if lomas got more blame than he deserved.

Shame we didn't already have a new manager in place as that performance will have cut the list of interested candidates in half.

How much for the Southend starting 11? Get your cheque book out JB!!!

are we f*** one of the worst in the league, mid table is where we should be on paper. These players should be f****** ashamed of theirselves if I performed like that in a sunday league game I would be kicking myself. We need a manager in by next week, relegation is not where we should be; Yeovil, Doncaster, Barnsley, Charlton, Sheffield Wednesday are all teams I think we are better than. Coming less than 19th this season is a joke and players today should not be paid until they show signs of playing proper football.

@WestKentLion: I thought we did through the fan on the board ( or so his posts would lead us to believe). Don't forget this man told us all he interviewed Lomas and he was the man for the job. Now is the time for him Ambler and the rest of the panel who gave Lomas the job to resign. They have taken it upon themselves to sign players when we've had no manager on board.

@markbrowns: the 'fan on the board' has no independent ideas - he is a mouthpiece for the club

One thing is for sure, none of our relegation rivals, and of course the other Championship teams are gonna have any fear whatsoever in playing us, we have reached a low I never thought would happen.
We're in freefall, those gutless wonders being paid off our efforts need to get properly stuck in and repay our loyalty, this isn't just poor management now this is a case of a bunch of t****** not caring about a club I love, and the board need to toughen up and get rid of this dross, cut the wages, lower the admission charges and get more into the ground. Its never over til its over, but i"d imagine that most neutral fans would have us down for the drop. Even with ten men today we shouldn't be losing 4-1, they had more desire and passion for victory and outplayed us, its inexcusable.
We as fans must stick with the club, but not with this lot of wasters, get shot of the laziest ( yes Trotter) and go back to basics, for example, definitely give Pavey a start. I could go on but will shut up for now.

I feel sick and ashamed, and I'm just a fan. What do the players feel.......probably f*** all when they get their £40k per month for being s***. There is a manager out there that can sort this lot out, but who that is, I don't have a clue

the critical point is lack of true investment in the club over the years at all levels has contributed in the slow demise of our club.if it continues we will most definitely be playing lower league football, which I admit is no stranger to millwall fc.and in truth a drop might be needed to clear the decks irrespective of who we might lose in the process.we as paying fans have nothing to look forward to,absolutely nothing and the shocking displays of football really sum it up, that those who run our club,do not know how to run it,and b******s to all those who defend them.bad planning delivers bad service.please someone on the board with a brain and guts.

Oh well I'm on the naughty step
Alex has decided to remove some of my posts for blaming JB for the mess we're in or perhaps for stating my hate for my team at the moment.
maybe he thinks I'm just not millwall enough or the wrong millwall.
confused as he hasn't told me why.
    shame on me.

@lukesmithmfc: Don't worry maybe you could stand as FOB and tell JB what a lot of us think instead of being there for a jolly up. I'll vote for you if you stand

Think we need a new manager who hasn't been affected by the disease spreading through the club. We need a manager who can freshen things up and get players who can shape up or ship out.

Its interesting that after we have lost a manager who had been in post for some time we are going through a transition period not unlike Man Utd.

Also can someone at the club speak to the FA about the crap refs we get. Not saying it would have affected towards result but their bloke gets sent off for an elbow and Easter stays on might have been different, not unlike Leicester
