Report: Bolton 3-1 Millwall

MILLWALL'S three-game unbeaten run was brought to an end as Bolton picked up their first home win of the season.

Dougie Freedman's side took the lead in the fifth minute when Jermaine Beckford flicked Jay Spearing's pass to Ryan Hall, who swept home past from eight yards.

The Lions were aggrieved that the opening goal had been allowed to stand given that Nicky Bailey was down with a head injury in the build up, but Jermaine Easter fired them level.

Beckford restored Bolton's lead two minutes before half time when he took Tim Ream's pass in his stride and dinked the ball over the advancing David Forde.

Sub Andre Moritz finished off a swift counter attack in the final minute to seal the win.

A lot of people said give Lomas 9 games. I had enough at 7. After 15 games and only 14 points surely people can't still be believing we'll turn the corner soon. He needs to go and go now before he does anymore damage. We have the personnel but not the manager and we will be in the third division next season if he remains at the helm.

@millwallphil: phil mcdonald picked up a knee injury and didnt want to risk it its not too serious and will play next week. With the recent injuries it was agreed that he sits this one out.
If we're honest we really werent going to get more than a point today.
We will see a much improved performance next week with beevers back alongside robbo just a shame malone's injured as i believe the back line will be sorted with the addition of hoyte.
We're not gonna have it all our own way but f*** me we are desperate for 3 points and sooner or later some teams are gonna cop a real hiding off us.
It dont look too good looking at the table but it will definately turn for.
      Keep the faith

@Sealion: wrong system me thinks. Morro needs to feed or be fed by another striker close to him, not as wide as they are now. Problem is our best right winger is at wolves.

McDonald must have been injured and he took Smith instead of Dunne. Beevers was never going to be risked as a starter.
I have this feeling that Lomas is now utterly convinced that we're almost there, just needs tweaking etc.
This squad should not have 14 points, be in 20th position and have a -14 goal difference.
So, it's either the players or Lomas who are at fault here.
I don't think Berylson is going to do anything about it so it's carry on regardless.

Are people really suprised? i had a feeling we would do nothing today, at end day we are a mid table team whatever people seem to think we have a top 6 team on paper.. we dont. any game in this league is tricky no point starting slating everyone all over again just get on with it and keep hoping we will sort it all out over the course of the season. a new manager now will only complicate things again.

@SLloyd23: I'd written Lomas off a few months ago, but to be fair the win-less run hides the fact we've just had decent draws against three of the best sides in the division. It's obviously still a disappointing result, but today was never going to be an easy game.

Next weeks match against Barnsley (who we have a poor home record against) is really important now. With other tough games coming up, anything other than a win is going to be vital if we want to put some space between us and the bottom three. If we lose, there's going to be real pressure on Lomas again.

Hate to say it but Barnsley is now a must win for you SL or its cheerio dear boy.

"Easter instead of Morison Why SL why?????" Was this a serious question? It is obvious that the reason Morison wasn't chosen is because he is useless, a word that I use time and time again to describe him not to mention his lack of goals. His time has past to be perfectly honest and its another bad bit of business on Millwalls behalf. Is it possible to send him back?

I personally think Shittu and Robinson need to pack their bags. The defence is the only major problem now, id like to see Lowry CB with Beevers.

All I say now to reassure myself Millwall will come good is "takes time" We know it can happen but time is not in our favour.

Agree with SLlod23 did not expect to get anything from this game. A point I would like to make is that Bolton were in a worse position than us and Freedman kept saying we will turn this round, different style of play, etc etc. Sound familiar, we have had the same from SL, except they have and we have not. Did not go today so I cannot comment on what is was like, the stats on BBC after 15 minutes were 63/35 to Bolton so we must of started slowly. A goal after 5 minutes , then the the usual goal just before half time, and you are chasing the game. Cannot help but think that our defence is poor, especially in the center, and our goal difference proves this. When those brave souls who went today get back and read this, can someone tell us without bias , how the game went.

@SLloyd23: agreed, it's so predictable that every time we get beat the manager has to go, we're gonna be bottom 8 so let's get on with it , nobody else will make much difference so slagging him off is pointless . Bolton , reading, qpr, burnley, all sides recently in the prem, that's a tough run and with our crowds we're lucky to be playing them, we're punching above our weight even being on this division. Not that I rate lomas by the way !

Whats next up Barnsley? well on this current form we're again going to struggle and the elusive corner is going on and on , It's going to end up putting us back to the foot of the table, sooner rather than later

Conceded another three goals, lost again, but people aim their darts at Morison. There is only one man to blame and it isn't a player who signed for first team football and is getting bit parts when we are chasing a game or the game is lost.
    Wake up everybody.

Time to f*** off this style of play. It's not working. Also time to get rid of this formation, and drop woolford, who is getting on my nerves, he had a few good games (a fluke IMO) since then he's been dog s***. Keep it simple and go 442 next week. Forde hoyte Robinson Beevers lowry Feeney bailey Chaplow waghorn Easter McDonald. F*** all this, holding midfielder, and attacking midfielder b*******, get some simple football going, mix it up, attack as a team and defend as a team. I'm sick of all this technical talk by lomas because it really means f*** all. If you understand football, you should be able to get this team playing well and winning matches.

Chopper said earlier in the season something like, he was pleased with the youngsters and felt a few could make the step up to the first team. I hope he's right. As has been indicated we look a good squad on paper but those who actually look good enough, play one or two games, and are off injured. Some of the others come with good reputations but now we are really starting to see why their clubs let them go without too much of a fight. Ambler also said, when he was getting on the Townsend bandwagon, that Millwall was a good place for young players to come to get gametime and furhter their career. Haven't seen much evidence of that. Surely there's better young defenders we could loan until ours come through. If only to keep us in this division.

I spend Wednesday, Thursday and Friday feeling upbeat, positive and looking forward to footie on Saturday.

Saturday nights, Sundays and Mondays feeling pessimistic, downbeat and plain pixxed off.

Just as we'll I don't read it on Tuesdays otherwise I'd be schizophrenic!

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. SL picked Easter , he scored. We can debate , dissect and scrutinise all we want. We're in a transitional phase , lost a football match. Get over it , we will be ok. By "ok" , I mean , we will stay up. End of.

I agree..one thing for sure..I wont demand the sacking if Lomas. ..IMO we are playing some great football...much better than the rubbish I saw at all the home games last year under jackett..the results though are worrying. ....It was said that in the second half we had the better of it..but got caught on thw counter attack. ..we need beevers back at centre half....and morison to get his finger out of his backside and start earning his money like I do monday to Friday!!

I still say Millwall have a good squad, but they need some inspiration, a dynamo a Brisley or Hurlock some spirit. Its up to the manager to get things right and think about his tactics. I cant remember the same team playing two games running due to injury, knocks, or being dropped. Gives me the guts ache but I have remained optimistic for over 40 years, still the same story. Look further than the manager the big problem has always been with the board who despite what they might say have never had any real ambition.

@Peckhamlad: You may be right Peckham, but we are a small club with small crowds only Yeovil and Bournmouth get less than us and only a little less. There are a handful of Div 1 clubs that get better crowds than us. Its all well and good being ambitious if you have the funds but if you haven't then you have to live within your means unless you wish to go under. This can be seen as lack of ambition but it is the sensible option. You do not have to look far to see what happens when ambition takes over from reality ie Coventry, Leeds, Portsmouth, etc.
We also nearly went under but was saved by the skin of our teeth, so call me unambitious if you like but I would rather have a Millwall in any division than no Millwall at all.

The attacking play is great defensively, we are all over the place at the moment. I have said this before, and I know we all love Robbo but he isn't good enough at this level. Shittu has clearly had some kind of meltdown. Lomas needs to play Beevers and Lowry together at the back and stop messing about with 'leaders' who don't have enough ability

Regarding the expectations of where we will finish in realtion to the quality if the squad, well I'd say that about 10th is our marker. That's being realistic, assuming we are about as good as we all think we are, when the rose tinted spectacles are off. Seriously, I posted a link on here a couple of days ago in another thread, quoting a Wiki page dedicated to Millwall F C. The most interesting stat was the one that said that for about the last 80 seasons (you'll have to go and read it for the precise details, but it's around that figure) our AVERAGE finishing position in the whole of the football league (and, for clarity, what's meant by that is 1st in what's now the Premiership, to 92nd which is last in Div 2, irrespective of whatever names the actual division's have been known as) is 40th. In other words, 20th in the Championship. That is exactly where we finished last season. Stats can be manipulated, of course, but this particular one is NOT misleading. That's our mark, love it or loath it. 20th. Our we can spend the next 3 seasons maturing in the Championship, gradually finishing higher and highrre, the our stick, our pedigree, our self-esteem is improving all the time. The management / manager are not at our fantastic club to be-little us, to fail, to make their own names bigger. No. They're here to succeed. Its about time ALL fans & supporters stopped baying fir blood, and got 100% behind everyone. The staff, the management, the players, the coaches, the physios - everyone. I love my club, it's in my veins, my heart, my soul. Always will be. Come on you Lions - and come on the doubters, have a bit of faith, yell scream and cheer like mad when we're playing and let's see where we are come mid January. I reckon where we are then, is where we will finish and even ifthat's s as low as 19th, that's still a smidge of progress. Small I know, but a smidge nontheless. Next season, same squad (minus Morison, who needs a bloody great big kick up his backside, and Shittu who'se overstepped his best before bar-coded date) and we will be going places. Thank you for reading, over and out...

@robsep2b: Is is very refreshing to see there are a fair few rational and level headed people on here amid the lynch mob fraternity, we all want success for our club but we must keep a grip on reality,
It is very emotional supporting Millwall and hence the many rants that appear on here (me included sometimes.) But this is almost a total rebuild of the club and it is going to be a bumpy ride all that is required is a great deal of patience.

@robsep2b: whilst I agree with your own opinions and stats, and indeed lions views as well - and I agree that we all get carried away from time to time. However, I do not consider myself anything other than someone with a moderate opinion, and use this forum to air those.

But one thing remains firmly at the back of my mind:-

SL has had the best financial backing of any manager that I have seen at our club. That dates back to the seventies.

So with that in mind, I feel, as I'm sure others do, very very frustrated with the lack of progress from last season.

To have absolutely no improvement in our league position from the amount of money spent is stepping backwards and should we get relegated, which don't kid yourself is a possibility, I can only see very dark days ahead.

That's besides the reduced gates which are inevitable and the current crop of players will leave in their droves because the wages will have to go down to a lower league level.

With the squad we have amassed we should be performing far better than we are currently.

As a STH, who supports his team on match days as voiciferiously as possible, why shouldn't I question the manager.

How much patience should I have?

when is it time to vent my thiughts rationally?

I like all on here only want what is best for my club, unfortunately I cannot see SL delivering. And I really do hope I am wrong.
