Millwall striker set to return early from Portsmouth loan

PORTSMOUTH manager Guy Whittingham has revealed that John Marquis' loan spell at the club is set to be cut short prematurely.

Marquis was left out of the squad for Pompey's 3-2 victory over Exeter on Saturday and was seen leaving Fratton Park before the game with his belongings.

The 21-year-old has scored two goals in six appearances for the League Two side and only recently extended his stint on the south coast by a further month.

But it now seems the striker is heading back to The Den.

"It is not officially over but John was disappointed not to be in the squad," Whittingham told ExpressFM. "He's a young man who came in and did well given the situation we were in.

"Part of the reason for him coming in was that at the time we had a few injured players. They are now on their way back and I wanted those players in the squad moving forward.

"John has been a victim of circumstance because some players have come back earlier than expected, so what happens now we will have to wait and see.

"We've still got him for a month but I don't want him here if he doesn't want to be here. I've had a conversation with him and he's thinking about it. I'll put a call into Millwall to explain the situation and let them know what's going on."

Strange one to comment on. Must be a massive blow to his confidence if he's unable to get a matchday squad place despite being hand picked for a loan place a month or so ago. I hope this "walk out" doesn't put other clubs off who may have been interested in his services.

    Hmmm.
Well I'd rather him being p***** off because he thinks he's good enough than thinking he's not.
He's not going to be in the millwall squad anytime soon and he hasn't done his future any favours. He can forget about going out on loan anywhere else. I mean, would you take him ?

Andros Townsend did something similar when on loan at Leeds, he can bounce back if he sorts his head out

Feel sorry for him. He's gone out on loan to get experience and now founds himself on the bench at a sh!te league 2 side. Don't balme him for being pi$$ed off and hope he finds another club that will take him on loan.
