Millwall boss furious with first-half showing against Blues

STEVE Lomas slammed Millwall's "unacceptable" first-half performance against Birmingham City as his side suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat at St Andrew's.

The Lions found themselves 2-0 down inside 34 minutes after David Murphy's brace and Lomas was furious with the way his players began the match.

Goals from Jesse Lingard and Tom Adeyemi after the break compounded the misery of the visitors, whose three-match winning run was brought to an abrupt halt.

Lomas said: "We told the lads that Birmingham are a high-energy team and we'd have to come flying out of the traps, and if we didn't we would be in for a tough night. The lads didn't heed that warning.

"We started very sloppily and just never got going. We're lucky it wasn't more than 2-0 at half time. We had a bit of a rally in the second half and a bit of a go, without playing particularly well, but we conceded the third and the match was over.

"You can't start matches like we did and expect to get anything from it. We put on a poor show for the fans that came up. I can accept getting beaten if you're having a go, but we didn't and that's unacceptable.

"We're scratching our heads to understand why we got a performance like that. It was poor – there is no other way to describe it. We thought we wouldn't have to dust ourselves down again but we do.

"We have a massive game against Bournemouth on Saturday before the international break and we have to show what we are made of."

The first time so far that I actually sympathise with Lomas. Players owe him a big performance on Saturday.

Did Morrison get injured? We were 2 nil down at halftime and Lomas takes a striker off for a winger.

Or was it a classic bad-Morrison performance like we saw before his op?

Radio were unsure whether Morison was unfit or uninterested. He looked good in those two half-hour cameos of the bench but I'll be glad to get McDonald back and playing with Waghorn. Lowry in for Shittu?

@Sidcup_Lad: I gotta defend Robbo, he has been a rock since he returned and he definitely brings back the old Millwall fighting spirit, but even he can't cover playes that bsically are prepared to put the effort in.

Actually I don't sympathise with Lomas. He sent out a formation where the lone striker was not supported by the midfield and once again his tactics caused confusion. This narrow defensive formation makes goals and attacking play hard to come by. He watched B'ham dominate the first half and failed to make any tactical change. As soon as he brought Martin on B'ham started to have some limited problems dealing with us. He is failing to sort out the defensive frailties which mean the club's goal difference is very poor for this stage of the season. Lomas has the job of preparing the team before matches and he should take responsibility fully on his shoulders for the woeful first half performance

@lioncall: There is lots of truth in that, I believe SL needs to be given time to get his squad and tactics right but last night's performance will defintiely be affected by bad tactics and a failure to react to the team being able to get into the game.

@lioncall: whilst I agree with some points like his failure to alter his tactics during the game and the fact that he doesn't appear to have a plan b until it's too late, I cannot totally agree.

They were the same tactics that the team had used successfully for the last three wins. Therefore they cannot be that hard to understand.

Well at least by anyone with a brain cell which excludes most footballers. Lol

I was wrong about putting Morison back up front to start, Easter may have done better. We miss McDonald and why was Bailey taken off? I feel SL has been let down.

We never beat birmingham anyway, should just give them the poxy 6 points at the start of the season. Tonight I was there and we were s***, no other way to describe it. Couldn't get the ball never mind pass it, couldn't really pick out a stand out player to s*** off but thought dunne f***** up for the 1st. The 2nd goal was a decent strike but the others were all preventable. Would have liked to have seen a change in shape or a plan B after the 1st goal becuause we hadn't offered anything up until that point anyway. Just a bad night and nothing positive to take away from tonight at all. For some strange reason I still think we will beat Bournemouth Saturday.

Didnt go but f*** me we do lose properly dont we ? -8 on the goal difference is looking rather worrying. Hope the wages generated helps towards a solid defender or two or is that unfair to what we already have? na i didnt think so.
No surprise that we lose with shittu in the starting line up, not saying he's s*** just more a bad omen than anything else. Got to play lowry alongside robbo at bournemouth, no guarentee it'll work but it may just make lowry happy playing at CB and it'll give more balance.
We came back rather well the last time we got spanked but we cant rely on that too much and bournemouth away wont be easy they've got a tight little ground down there and their fans will be more than up for it. I'd take a draw as i cant see us getting too much.
Sort it out wall the goals against is unexcusible at this stage of the season please dont undo all the recent good work.
    F*** i'm in for some s**** today
Cheers lads you really know how.to make us happy.

Was apprehensive about this game as Birmingham have been due a win and with our overall season record they would have fancied beating us.... Read the reports and sounds like we didn't turn up but regardless Lomas has to take some responsibility for his team selection. Have said it all season, IMO Morrison is an impact player who is much more effective coming off then bench in the last 30 minutes of matches and shouldn't have started... Nevertheless we can't expect to win every week and hopefully this will be a reality check for our players that work rate and committed performances are our biggest strengths. MacDonald typifies these attributes, leads from the front and is a big loss. Hope that injury heals QUICK!!

Now looks like we're going to see some changes for the next game. Things changed after the Derby result so lets hope we have once again learnt a few things from last night.

This must be what it feels like to be a Charlton fan when we beat them!
Sat will be a very tough game expecially with a certain Lewis grabban looking to prove a point.
However, I'll take last nights defeat if we can win the next 3.
Not rocket science, if we raise our game / tempo / performance, we win games, FACT...

@NICKOLA: Not sure if it's true that JB went back to the States BEFORE last night, but is that's right it certainly feeds the rumour that the players are responding more to him than to SL.
Building a new team is a difficult and extremely hazardous process, but it's one we need to go through if we are ever going to piece together a squad capable of challenging - or even staying in the Championship.
SL needs to get the carrot and stick balance right and JB needs to wake up to the fact that having appointed a young, inexperienced manager, he should be around as much as possible to mediate and advise.
It's a work in progress and there are going to be plenty of ups and downs. As long as there's not one almighty down in May I'll be quite happy.

@Lonz: When JB is over here, I doubt if he is down the training ground working with the players, so your comment does not stack up. I assume everyone has been watching football higher than school level, so you should know a bad performance can happen to any team. Ask David Moyes. I am sure SL knows who he wants out, and even if Dunne has played OK for a couple of games, he is definitely a weak link, as is Shittu at the moment. Get some decent defenders in during loan window and see us move on.

@beedoscores: Groan! Working with the players on the training ground is obviously down to SL, but there is a massive man-management job to be done as well and rumour has it SL's abrasive style isn't going down too well with some players.
There's a hell of a lot more to building a real 'team' than what happens a couple of hours a day in training.

@beedoscores: Oh so SL is upsetting a few players, is this another Di Caneo situation. Most of the team building is done at the training ground and on match days, and I am sure JB is supporting SL when talking with the players, otherwise he just undermiines what he is trying to do. That is man management not listening to a few griping players.

So do I Nickola. If you dont put the effort in then you haven't earned your wages so you should be deducted some of it to pay for the away fans expenses. Put the same effort in all the time lads and you wont be deducted a penny. Simple really.

Back down to earth with a bump. Let's face it, we've all seen these sorts of performances from 'wall teams over the years, regardless of the managers or players involved. Forget it & let's move on to Bournemouth. I hope Lewis Grabban doesn't score. LG looked very good for us when he first arrived but was a bit lazy, however, he didn't deserve the abuse he received at the hands of some of our more idiotic fans & most definitely shouldn't have been subjected to the racist remarks hurled at him. I expect a good, solid home win on Saturday.

Last season I couldn’t praise DS enough for leadership and commitment, this season he is a shadow of what he was and think his first XI playing days are over. He is costing us dearly.
Pre-season friendly’s he was making bad mistakes and even when we have been recently winning he has given us some nervy moments. He used to be a tower in the air, not now. He used to be in the right place and the right time, not now. He was awkward to play against, not now. Anyone with pace will easily turn him. Sorry Danny but it’s time to move on.

I feel for all the supporters that travelled up to Birmingham to witness such a defeat. There are several weaknesses that need sorting out that is obvious. Good players do not turn into bad players overnight, Morison and Bailey were both replaced, not sure why Bailey was. Personallyi have some doubts about whether Morison is either fully fit, playing in the best position or is fully committed. However blaming individuals is not going to help. This board was full of praise and euphoria last week lets hope Saturday evening last night's performance will be forgiven.

I think Morison is best used as a sub at the moment. We seem to play better football withought him. When he starts everyone tries to rely on him too much and the midfield disappears!
I thought Martin was our only decent player yesterday and Malone got found out a bit.

This is true. I think when Morrison gets used as lone striker, he knows he can't play that role. doesn't like it and lets his head drop. He's best running at people with another big man up top. Hence the great season he had with him and Grant Holt at Norwich in the championship a few seasons back.

Watched the football league show on Sunday, great performance against Leeds but l noticed that the few chances that did have, Shittu was involved. He was very good last season in a bad side that had there backs to the wall. Remember when he first left us for QPR he was found out and dropped. I think he has done us proud but its time to move on, he is not mobile enought for this division. Also l will get slagged down for this but l dont think Dunney is up to this any more, makes to many mistakes in vital areas, and not good enough at getting forward. Dont tell me off just making a point !

We thought SL had found a team that would compete but after last night it is clear that he still has some tinkering to do, not much Lowery in for Shittu is obvious, Mac coming back hopefully, I agree that SL must take some blame for tactics, they played 4-2-3-1 which means their full backs can bomb on making 6 attackers ie fulback scores twice but he played the same team, Shittu apart that has won the past 3 games, no widemen to counter fullback play, therefore on the back foot stt away only when he brought Martin on did we compete for a while, so a bit naive Steve so make the changes and go for it Sat

@AireLys: I dont think he thinks a lot of Millwall or where we come from, are they the same leeds utd who employ El Hage Douif & Jermaine Beckford and the same club who played Real Madrid in the Europiean cup final in Paris and caused all that trouble out there in the 70's

@Barnlion: Yes they have very short memories and appear to be very bad losers.

This makes me larf. ..the only one we haven't blamed yet is the ref !! Point taken that we have defensive frailties at present. ..but so far we have blamed Lomas , dunney...fact challenge was outside the area. Shittu...he sound like he had average game...Robbo, morison lazy git apparently. ..but this Team us still better than last years team , if we had that team we would be down with Yeovil and Doncaster...Fact some people need to be honest with themselves and admit Millwall are and will be an average Championship team for some time to come ! With the crowds we get not much on the horizon. ..however we can still get behind the players and MANAGER to ensure we remain competitive this year..remember how many of us have played football and had a crap game and blamed the manager !...anyway just my opinion

@millwallphil: Well said mate, Millwall were virtually the same team that beat Leeds, except Morison in for McDonald, maybe the tactics or formation was wrong, maybe they were given sedatives in the tea, maybe they were coach sick or there is a curse on Millwall when they play Birmingham! Whatever happened lets hope it can be turned around against Bournemouth

@millwallphil: I blame the probability that all of our players are colour blind and passed to the team in blue!
