Report: Millwall 2-0 Leeds United

MILLWALL produced a rousing second-half performance to see off Leeds United and seal their third straight league win.

After an uneventful opening, the Lions edged in front after the break when Martyn Woolford drilled in from 20 yards.

And Scott Malone finished off a slick move to make it 2-0 and secure the points.

Danny Shittu returned to Millwall's starting line up in the absence of the injured Mark Beevers, whilst Jermaine Easter came in for Scott McDonald after the striker failed to recover from a knee injury picked up against Charlton.

There was an early scare for the home side as Rodolph Austin seized on a moment of hesitancy in the Lions' midfield and rifled a yard wide of the far post.

But it was Millwall who came closest to breaking the deadlock in a scrappy opening 45 minutes when Martyn Waghorn's shot came back off the woodwork and Woolford sliced the rebound over from a tight angle.

In the 32nd minute, Shittu headed over from Waghorn's corner before, at the other end, Luke Murphy's first-time drive sailed over David Forde's bar.

The Lions thought they should have been awarded a penalty when Malone broke into the area and was brought down by Austin, but referee Chris Foy waived away their appeals.

United defender Jason Pearce stabbed over from close range just before half time as the sides went in level at the break.

Liam Trotter had a chance to open the scoring within 90 seconds of the restart when the ball ricocheted into his path on the edge of the area but the midfielder curled over.

Leeds should have gone ahead when Alex Mowatt picked out Ross McCormack inside the six yard box, but the Scotland international somehow glanced wide with the goal at his mercy.

And Millwall made the visitors pay for that glaring miss in the 64th minute when substitute Lee Martin picked out the run of Woolford, who steadied himself before slamming his shot into the bottom corner.

Spurred on by a vociferous Den crowd, the Lions soon added a second goal as Malone dispatched Trotter's cut back beyond Paddy Kenny.

Malone nearly undid his good work with a bizarre own goal moments later, but, having knocked the ball past goalkeeper Forde, he scampered back to make a vital clearance on the line.

Forde made his first meaningful save of the afternoon in the 83rd minute when Austin latched onto McCormack's pass, but the Republic of Ireland stopper smothered the Jamaican's effort.

Woolford could have added his second and the Lions' third goal when he lifted Trotter's pass over the advancing Kenny, but the ball bounced agonisingly off the post.

Malone and woolford outstanding, was pleasantly surprised by martin and trotter (still seemed a bit too lazy though). Got to give Lomas credit Martin coming on was vital.

Unbeatable unstoppable Millwall! A superb result from the lads Well done. people who talk about deadwood at Millwall are talking out the back of their proverbials, This result proves strength in depth, with Danny, and the others showing their mettle. Well done to them and SL for their hat-trick of wins.

Looking forward to watching the highloghts on BBC tonight. Am still in a daze as to how everything has turned aroind.

@lion.ie: Trotter's and Abdou's return to the team has resulted in 3/3 wins..no coincidence but proof how the team missed them when they were not playing. Trotter will only get better and Jimmy is a new player! a few weeks ago it was SL out from many on the board how things can turn around. There are no bad players at Millwall only players who are going to get better.

Last week the defence were top dogs but they won't have an easier game all season than they did today because of the shift put on by everybody in front of them, including the unfairly maligned Trotter. Great team performance and I'm starting to believe Mr Lomas.

What a difference confidence makes. I was worried about playing without McDonald and Morison, the 1 in a 4231 has huge responsibility, but the others stepped up to the plate. Cagey game until we scored, then we were slicing Leeds up every time and 2-0 flattered them. Woolford looks a man possessed, he's just getting better and better. The second goal was sublime. For me Trotter is the man making this formation tick, he's the pivot. Play it into his feet and he can pick out the pass that releases the wide men. Was unsure about Keogh coming on to lead the line as Easter ran himself ragged, but Martin for Easter was an inspired change. Martin a fresh burst of energy and Waghorn looked better down the middle. Well done Millwall.

Woolford and Malone on the score sheet - just shows how strong our left side now is. As been said before, lets make that right side as attacking effective as it once was and start getting a vice grip on this league. The squad has never been stronger and confidence is up, lets see what we can do away at Birmingham... we may well live up to the 'Dark Horses' tag of the Championship yet.

So happy to finally come away from the Den happy with 3 points on a Saturday. Both goals were well worked passing moves which wouldn't look out of place in the premier league. Still thought Shittu had a couple of frightening moments but for me Malone must surely now be first choice full back. We hit the post twice too which could have really made the score line more enjoyable but I am truly chuffed with that performance. COYL Keep it up at Brum on Tuesday night they are there for the taking. Miiiiiiii

Whole team was sound in the 2nd half, not the first. Trotter began lazy, did well in the second. Same for Shittu. Malone the MOTM by a country mile. Woolford/Bailey/Robbo/Waggers/Martin all good. Abdou ran. Dunne is a cheat. I think I saw Forde yawning at one point. Better than the Charlton performance. Good.

@harryfabian: Sorry Harry, I counted five tackles by Trotter in the first 15 minutes, keeping a close eye on him because of the comments on here. Shittu was solid on an easy day but Lomas' face was a picture after one of his thumped 50 yard clearances, not impressed.

@lion.ie: Well if that's the case then perhaps I'm being a bit harsh, but I didn't see the tackles personally. In the air he wouldn't jump, so it's not like he gave 100% is it.

@harryfabian: As I said last week, maybe we should play him at centre half so he can win more headers! To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if he's still sub consciously looking after himself a bit following the injury but on today's performance who cares still our classiest player by far and will get better.

@Hookymfc: Everytime he is under pressure from a forward/winger, you'll find he turns around (to face forde), throws his arms up in the air and dives in order to win a free kick. Did it twice today and once against Blackpool. He's a disgrace.

I don't think there was a Millwall player today that didn't perform! Fully deserved the win! Scott Malone has been blinding, definitely the best left-back at the club. Gotta love Robbo, what a difference he has made! ... Good decision from SL to bring on Lee Martin, he was brilliant when he came on.

I despair that anyone could watch that game today and give Trotter a hard time for his performance. Most things went through him. He tackled, went to ground, won flick ons, linked everything up and played some lovely football capped with a great one two with Malone for the second. Top,top performance all round by the Lions today. Big well done to Lomas for putting Shittu back in. Pretty solid and will only get better with more games. So many positives and that is without McDonald and Morison. This squad has strength in depth. Best in that regard for many a year. Very very promising.

Great string of results being put together. . . Great to see shittu have a decent game after couple not even in the squad. Shows we have good strength in depth across the park with Easter back too. Not to mention chaplow on the bench and Lowry and MacDonald to come back in. Malone and woolford were outstanding today too. What a difference I bit of belief and half work does for a group of players. . . Real millwall on the horizon again.

Great performance from all. Solid at first then really clicked. Thought Waghorn looked a Millwall Boy. All over the place and chased back. Thought Woolfords chip was a delight. Still can't believe it came back off the post. Took his goal superbly. Looks like a footballer with a brain. If Malone's goal had been in a Premier game the so called tv experts would be p****** their nickers for months. Brilliantly worked.

What a difference between the two halves. In the first half we just seemed to want to hoof the ball in the air. How frustrating is that style of play to watch? Then came the second half, where we played the ball to feet and absolutely tore them apart. Our movement off the ball in the second half was exceptional. Every time we went forwards their defence s*** themselves. And with Morison and McDonald to come back, we'll only get stronger. Keep playing like that and we'll do some damage in this league. Well done Millwall.
