Preview: Nottingham Forest vs. Millwall

MILLWALL are expected to rest several key players for Wednesday's Capital One Cup clash against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Manager Steve Lomas is conscious that his side will need their full energy against Brighton in the Championship on Saturday and wants to protect the nucleus of his squad.

Nicky Bailey and Richard Chaplow are among those who could be left on the bench. QPR loanee Shaun Derry is cup-tied.

Scott Malone, Jimmy Abdou and Liam Feeney are set to start, whilst Jack Smith could come into the defence. Josh Wright, Martyn Woolford and John Marquis are also in the squad.

Strike trio Steve Morison (hernia), Jermaine Easter (hamstring) and Dany N'Guessan are all sidelined by injury, meaning Andy Keogh and Scott McDonald could be line for starts.

David Forde and Liam Trotter will both be given more time to recover from knee injuries, but James Henry is back after illness.

Forest will make changes too, with ex-Lions frontman Darius Henderson tipped to feature. Striker Simon Cox has recovered from an ankle injury and could start.

@MillwallGibby: It's the league games I dread most now.

Saturday's result should have instilled some confidence, so hopefully the pressure we'll be off tonight - it's the league cup, away from home and Forest will be the firm favourites. I reckon we might nick a result - remember Greg Berry's goals up there nearly twenty years ago? Failing that we'll get slaughtered 6-0.

    NO NO NO ..............................
You have got to be kidding me.
I just don't get this at all. We can't get the first team to gel so why change it all then revert back on Saturday ???

If true another c****** decision by Lomas who would appear to be up his own a*** much like most other managers when it comes to Cup competitions - as they devalue it all by fielding reserve sides.
He should be putting his best side out and aiming to win - wouldn't it be nice if we got a any final league cup or otherwise. A full strength team might also help get his first choices up to proper fitness and some understanding of how they should play as a team - God knows they need to. Though of course I'm sure he has a higher intellectual reason for sending out Josh Wright and co

I disagree Lomas is doing the right thing, sod this cup. Having a fit squad for Saturday is more important. Crystal Palace put out their reserves last night they got beat but I bet they are not worried.

Treat it as a reserve game

Any other season I would agree, but this season we are still trying to blood new players and gel a team of strangers together. We should be playing all fit first team players, they need game time together. I doubt if Wright/Woolford/Abdou will start another game this season, Malone and Feeney deserve a chance though, they have done well from what I have seen.@ke7187:

One minute we are told that the players aren't match fit then the next minute SL "rests" them for Saturday! Whether you like SL or not, I think us fans are being fed a load of b******s. We may not care about the cup but it's a competitive match and we could use these matches for our best players to "gel" and get fit. Sitting on the bench or in the stands is not helping to get the players fit.

Any manager would not risk his best players, and nor will NF, hence Henderson due to play as he cant get a look in. Saturday is far more important, although its still s*** when we lose. My suggestion for saturday would be to get Derry out, Chaplow in the middle and Martin on the wing. Give McDonald a run in the side, and I bet he will start to score.

Forest haven't got one point from 4 games so of course they can rest their best. I'd be in favour of us doing so also if we were in that position but we aren't and that's the reason why we should not be playing second stringers.

What a dreadful sign of what football is becoming when people dismiss a cup game. Once upon a time you played every game to win - not as an experiment to patronise your own supporters.

@Old_Les: Spot on Les. I understand it to a small extent when you have the depth in squad that the top six in the Premiership would have, and also if you are trying to compete in the European competition group stages, but for other teams there can be no excuse for treating these historic competitions with such contempt, especially clubs like ourselves.

Surely, this is the perfect match to play McDonald alongside Keogh to see if they can gel or not. Also, after 4 games it's now time for SL to know who his 1st starting 11 is, isn't it? Obviously, we know Forde & Delboy are to return soon but this is a game to cement our CB , midfield & striker pairings.

Does SL know what the nucleus of his squad is then? Doesn't seem like it from where I am sitting. Got a ticket for tonight so will be interested to see what team he puts out. Sod resting players, i'd put a full strength side out.

I agree this cup is not good for us, the gelling of the first team is essential, why not play them and get the to gel, sooner rather than later, the more time playing together surely will best for all and sundry

You have a squad for a reason, and this type of game is an ideal opportunity to give some of your squad players an opportunity to stake claim. There are still some 1st team players that will be in the starting eleven with the rest of them on the bench, so its not a total 2nd string team. I cant see the problem to be honest, this game is of course important for a club like ours and if i was one of the 200 or so supporters going up there tonight i would want to see the strongest side possible. But to what avail? pick up more injuries? No matter how important this game is, Saturdays is much more important.

@Windy: Fully agree Windy, the league is more important than the cup and the way our injuries are stacking up it would be crazy to risk them. As for the suggestion of playing Trotter pure crazy talk, we can't risk him breaking down by rushing him back much better to bring him in after the international break.

On the one hand we have Lomas (and his supporters) saying that his signings need time to gel and on the other we can apparently afford to 'rest' players in what is effectively a free league game against in form Championship opposition where we have little to lose other than a bit of pride. All this 'the cup isn't important' bllx annoys me too. We've won almost fk all as a club in our history and can count the really special days on two hands. Also, cup competitions are a path to a significant boost in income if you get a good draw or into the later rounds, we were rewarded well for our cup run last year and if you look at Bradford it has been a route to the beginning of a revival in their fortunes. Get your strongest available side out, treat it like a three pointer. In my eyes Lomas has five more league games to prove that he can get a competitive team out of HIS squad. This is a bonus game and SL should be seizing the opportunity with both hands, not getting his bleating excuses in before the game even kicks off.

This is where Lomas's inexperience shows. He needs to keep playing what he thinks is his best team so a lot of new players get used to each other. Nonsense about saving them for Brighton. Mind you, that said I don't think he knows what his best starting 11 is.

I agree with SL decision to rest players. Why risk people in a game that has less importance than Saturday's ? You can't play people week in week out , twice a week and expect 100% from them physically . Yes winning's important but this cup ain't the be all and end all.

@Block 8: OK B8, if that's the case when we get beat by Brighton on Saturday, which I think we will, there can be no more 'waiting for the team to gel' excuses from anybody. The perfect scenario is if he plays a weakened team against a likely weakened Forest team and wins. Then we might start actually thinking Lomas has a clue.

If our "best" 11 against Brighton on Saturday aint good enough , so be it. But , let's give ourselves the best chance possible by resting our main men .
Why do you feel there can be no more "team to gel excuses" ? Is there a deadline ?
Lomas has got an awful lot of work to do. I'm just trying to "buy in" to what he is doing at the moment. But I really feel it's far too soon for him to be judged. At Christmas time , maybe.

@Block 8: Because if he can't see the opportunity that's in front of him tonight to give the first 11 that are available another game to 'gel' he is daft. I am neither for or against Lomas at the moment and have said all along that the first nine games will give us most of what we need to know about his abilities, but he needs a win soon to keep the support on side, he could go for that tonight and boost the confidence for Saturday or get beaten with a load of squad players tonight and be no nearer to knowing where he is going next and continue the downward spiral. He'll learn more tonight by playing his strongest team, whatever the result. Besides all this we should be looking to get through to the next round in any case.

I understand the chain of thought here. It's one of 2 things , field a strong side in the hope of a win , confidence boost etc. Or , weakened side to rest the big boys. I personally prefer the 2nd option in this case but , play Robbo to continue his comeback.

15 mins to go and like everyone on here I hope we get a result.
Having said that, let's take McDonald off and put Keogh on, never mind trying to get our first choice strikers to actually play together and let's also take Bailey off and put Chaplow on rather than let them play centre mid together. And, while we're at it, let's leave Woolford on.
    What a crock.

I was quite excited about SL signing Morison, Martin, Chaplow, Bailey and McDonald before the season started. My concern now is that including tonight's game we have played 5 matches and he still appears to have no idea about his formation, tactics and team selections. I thought he had signed these players to build a team around including the players who were Championship standard who he inherited from the previous squad. I am trying to be patient and think that maybe things will improve the next game but it never happens. The Transfer Deadline is next week and then the International Break. Will the performances improve after that? I FEAR NOT BECAUSE SL HAS NO IDEA WHAT HE IS DOING!!!!!

It's ok, apparently they have played well, Feeney seems to have had a good game. We don't want any more injuries out of this tin pot cup, Saturday is more important. I never even expected a draw after 90 min so try to give the guys some credit.

@Peckhamlad: Forest played their second 11, what credit can Lomas draw from going out tonight? As others have also said, I don't see the point of resting or subbing the new signings. IMO Lomas has shot one of his big toes off tonight and I hope for his sake and ours he hasn't got the other barrel loaded for Saturday.

This is exactly what I was saying earlier. Forest put out a second eleven tonight and from LP commentary it sounds like we have been competitive with a weakened side and had a 1-1 draw on 90 minutes. If we had fielded our best fit 11 tonight we might well be in the next round with our first confidence building win under our belt. A wasted opportunity.

Get your best team out Lomas, starting with Saturday, and only change it for injuries and when the better players are fit again.

Never happy are you firstly you moan about lomas style not being on ground and just defenders hoofing it to strikers and then them loosing it which didn't really happen midfielders and defenders were getting amongst the attack then your moaning about no goals at all and we get one and you also moan about no goals in open play and we got that aswell 2-1 away to Forrest is an improvement to 0-1 at home to Yeovil surely come on guys have some support if you want to watch amazing football and win every game go buy a man utd shirt and support them
