Millwall midfielder marks injury comeback with U21s goal

MIDFIELDER Liam Trotter scored on his return from a knee injury as he guided Millwall U21s to a 2-1 win over Swansea City at The Den on Friday afternoon.

The 24-year-old underwent surgery in July, ruling him out of the start of the season, but he stepped up his recovery with a 60-minute run out for Neil Harris' reserves.

Trotter is back in full training but he is unlikely to make a first-team appearance until mid-September, after a two-week international break.

Charlie Penny scored the Lions' other goal, with Rory Donnelly on target for the Swans.

Just what Lomas needs, Harris and the reserves two from two.

Positive. But if he made it through 60 mins why cant he at least make the bench for Forest or Brighton?

2-0 up, goal disallowed and hit woodwork three times, and that was just the half time report. Hope the first team take note.

@TheBermondseyBomber: Only last season everyone was slating Trotter for his laziness! Now all of a sudden he's going to "be a mssive boost" I can't keep up with you lot! People need to make up their minds! Be interesting to see how he teams up with Bailey though. Sounds quite a good partnership!

@kempo_123: Kempo fully agree with your post, done nothing last year even before we were told about the injury, he has all the ability and the strength to be a very decent player at this level or maybe even in the prem.

But I am not sure if he has the commitment to produce the form week in week out like all top players do, "but how would I know supporting the Lions", but if he is fit and has a change of attitude he could be one of our best players & get his move to the prem.

But its a big ask as he also promised at Ipswich but never fulfilled there either, so come on Liam you still are just about young enough to get into the top flight via having a great Millwall career ovr the next couple of seasons, except the challange.

Hopefully the injury is sorted as was poor tail end of last season. On song he is a top championship player and just what our midfield needs. Surely this means we can get Derry off the wage bill... Hurry back Liam!

Yep strange signing considering SL keeps talking about the wage restraints... Although his experience is useful it seems a short sighted fix especially as we are short of numbers in other positions.

I was at the match and Trotter was a class above anyone else on the pitch. Everything he did he made look simple, he played several defence splitting passes for Penny and Pavey and his goal was a trademark Trotter finesse shot from outside of the box. He looked a lot sharper than Josh Wright and whenever he was on the ball he was looking to gain territory further up the pitch rather than constantly going sideways and backwards.

Also Fred Onyedinma was another stand out player, he loves to pull a couple of stepovers out the locker and likes to drop his shoulder, he was constantly doing this and beating players.

Been hearing good things about Onyedinma, only young but not unheard of for 16year old to play first team football.. We certainly need a spark, how good is he?

@davesavagesleftfoot: Great idea that. Lomas signs 3 central midfielders (maybe 4 if Martin is one who knows) Trotter is fit and there's Abdou and Wright - then we pin our revival hopes on the shoulders of a sixteen year old boy.

@Old_Les: Chill out Old Les, not suggesting that he starts every game but if Arsenal, United and Liverpool have been sniffing about he must have plenty about him. Your talking like 16/17year old have never played first teams foots... Seem to recall Owen, Rooney, Giggs, Walcott making impression at similar ages. All I'm saying is if he is good enough then he is old enough!!

@davesavagesleftfoot: he always looked comfortable on the ball and he isn't afraid to run at players and take them on. I think a lot of fans would be concerned that he's not the biggest player, but that's a huge part of his game as he plays like a little Brazilian playmaker. I'd say he's similar to Oscar who plays for Chelsea.

Dont get me wrong I rate Del Boy(on he's day) and he is a completely different type of player to Derry . But i think we are being a little unfair on Derry, I saw him against Ipswich and Huddersfield and he done alright and was arguably one of our better players. Just saying, don't right him off he's a good player and i a think Lomas reckons him so he may not be on he's way when Trotter returns to full fitness.

If Lomas wants new players in, and given it's tough getting rid of our long term contracted players, then Derry is logically the first to go.

@NICKOLA: I think Lomas should get this team firing before he is allowed to bring in more players. There is nothing wrong with the players that have been starting matches, its the way they are been told to play is my worry. Round pegs in round holes is surly the starting point and way forward.

Play U-21s on Saturday, then Liam in middle of the park as Captain on his return : )
Does make me smile though when fans who have slated Trotts for years now herald his imminent return. I know a few who never stopped moaning at him for his 'lazy' style of play but for me he is probably the most skilful player at the club. Need him back sooner rather than later IMO. COYL

When Trotter is fit I hope SL doesn't play him and Bailey in central midfield with Chaplow stuck out on the wing again. With these 3 all available SL should pick a formation that allows them all to play in midfield and persevere with it.

Think Trotter just needs to be a bit more proactive, he obviously has the ability and could easily become the Patrick Vierra of the Championship! The good thing now is that he will have to compete for a starting place, where as before there was no real competition for MF places. It's still however just one part of the jigsaw, and only time will tell whether Lomas owns a puzzle with pieces missing!

Rumour has reached me that Berylson has made additional funds available, banking on the sales or loans of our existing contracted players before the transfer window closes.
Currently, there are two fullbacks waiting in the wings and a season long loan offer for a striker-Nouha Dicko- currently with Wigan but who was loaned out to Blackpool last season.

Sounding like another clueless performance and seems Bywater keeps pointlessly lumping the ball at our two midgets up front. Three and a half games gone and I hope that for the first time Lomas is able to send out a better second half team than the did in the first.
