Lomas needs Millwall fans' support, says Huddersfield boss

HUDDERSFIELD Town boss Mark Robins feels Steve Lomas needs the "help and support" of Millwall fans after a difficult start to his tenure at The Den.

Robins consigned Lomas to his third straight league defeat in charge on Saturday but was quick to come to the defence of his opposite number in his post-match press conference.

James Vaughan's header handed the Terriers a 1-0 win at The Den.

"They're having a difficult time at the minute," Robins said. "They've got a new manager who is trying to impose his ideas and he's finding it difficult. He needs help and support.

"The supporters down here are magnificent because they're so passionate – sometimes that spills over but they can help. I think Steve needs that at the minute and a bit of stability. They've got a good squad of players.

"They played directly today but also some decent stuff as well and caused us one or two problems. I was pleased with the outcome, the application of the players and the way we controlled the game.

"It was a clean sheet and a decent performance. We withstood everything that Millwall threw at us. It's never an easy place to come."

Sounds like a bit of an insurance quote to me. It is easy to praise up the losing team when you have played away and won.

"We withstood everything that Millwall threw at us. It's never an easy place to come."

Two points about that quote 1) It wasn't that much 2) It is an easier place to come now, rather than the old Den. All managers love to put on their CV that they went into the lions den and came away with 3 points, the sad fact is that it is a lot easier now than it was in 1971 when I first started going!!

Competition time, (answers on a postcard please for a £1000 first prize)
Yeovil, Ipswich and Huddersfield all have one thing in common.
I 'll give you a clue, all three teams only have one victory this season in 3 starts and its against a team that begins with the letters Mi (and its not Middlesbrough even though it could be an easy mistake to make).

Cost of entry £1001 per guess to be paid directly into my Nigerian bank account....

I think this has now become more than a joke, not only have we lost against the ''easier'' teams in the league, but we now have an opposing manager, who's team has just beaten us at our place, feeling sorry for our manager... So not only have they knocked us to the canvas, they're now show boating around rubbing our noses in it... How much worse can this get, getting beaten at home and then thier manager feeling sorry ours?? We are being made to be the laughing stock of the league, complete joke..

Of course Robins thinks we should get behind him. If it carries on it will be one of the relegation places out the way.

I can clearly see its been a poor start as I've attended all 3 home games so far but I will still give lomas his 10 games and if it doesn't change then Tony pulis will be next millwall manager!

Lomas yet again all talk and no substance, you wer right the first goal was again important and once again we did not even hit the target, your tatics were cought out within minutes by Mark Robbins, and the subs you made were strage to say the least.

IMO you look at of your depth you seem to have very good sound bites but once the football starts there is nothing there, you persist in playing Chaplow out of position ? you took Easter off when he was far the best upfront player on the park.

In the last tweny minutes you seemed to retreat back into your dugout beacuase you had no answer to what Huddersfield were doing , at corners you had Dunne amrking James Vaughan why and it did not work to our cost.

I think you may be safe for a least 8 games as JB has invested a lot of money in your signings but out of the 3 games you have lost I am sure both the homes games would have been down as wins, as neither are not one of the top sides in the divsion.

Really worried about the next two games because I cant see us getting anyting at either, then we will be in real trouble just like now, points 0 goals 0 goals against 5 position 24th what have you done to us you spackman/nichol clone, get it right or jog on a.s.a.p.

Like most of us, there doesn't seem words that can express our despair after all the pre-season euphoria. I have but one question - did SL bring in the players he has because he had a master game plan and these players fit the plan perfectly? - or did he sign these players because they were the only ones who wanted to come to us because they weren't wanted by their clubs? I know which one of the two I believe and if I'm right despair is all there is to look forward to.

What was it you said Lomas to us fans at the forum and in numerous interviews? Millwall fans wont mind losing a few, its the manner of those losses right Lomas? How we lost going down fighting right Lomas?... Wrong! I have had enough of him already. We be lucky to stay in the Championship, forget top 10 finish and the premiership ambition.

I came all the way back from Afghanistan to watch Millwall yesterday- here is my take....
It is still early days - 43 games to go but...the team looked very disjointed. Morison needs to be dropped or go back because he was useless, couldn't win anything in the air. Stop the long ball system, Bywater just seemed to want to punt the ball up to Morison everytime, as I said he wasn't winning anything in the air. When we started the play he ball on the ground mid-way through second half we actually looked decent, PLAY THE BALL ON THE FLOOR Millwall. Not sure about Derry- do we really need him? Start Macdonald and Easter. Martin put some good crosses in the box when he came on and looks a good player. I am sure the team will come together, we just need to get behind Lomas and the boys.

@bead30: thats a pretty bloody good summary of what i have seen also, disjointed is exactly whatbi am seeing. SL needs to earn his crust and get the units within the team playing together to the same plan.

I think it's time for Lomas to decide once and for all what his best team is.
Martin and McDonald have to start matches. Chaplow has to play centre midfield with Bailey. Derry should be on the bench. Robinson should play and Shittu should be at a health farm. If we haven't got the funds for new full backs then at least stick with the best two we have, Dunne and Malone.
I don't see the difference Trotter is going to make. He's going to have to replace either Bailey or Chaplow unless we're going to play 451 and I don't see why we needed Derry anyway. We could have got Shorey instead which is more logical. If Morison isn't good enough then bench him. If he's not getting the service then get the midfield organised.

@NICKOLA: agreed! Martin and McDonald need to be starting now both look fit and ready! Wouldn't mind seeing that 4-5-1 with trotter bailey chaplow in the middle and Martin and Henry supporting McDonald! Surely that's goals right there!!

@NICKOLA: Someone once said that the players you have dictate the system you play, we have 5 CH on the books why not go 3-5-2 Robinson,Beevers,Lowery, the midfield
Henry & Martin on the wings Derry holding, Bailey & Chaplow CM, Morrison & McDonald up front, Trotter
would then be competion for the CM, we are all depressed at the moment but I was at the Ipswich game and before the it started I was pleased with the quality we had on the pitch, there was no performance or application unfortunately as we all know but quality will always come through COYL

Let us play on the floor, this hoof it out of my area and its someone elses problem, isn't getting us anywhere, but! we aint got anyone who feels comfortable on the ball -- Panic stations --- is my slant on it, hence hoof it out of my area,
My point of view is biased as I prefer the skills applied by the technical side we have not got a sole whos got an 'aporth' of skill
Everyone elses deadwood is here and as such we aint going nowhere fast quite a lot more home defeats are on the horizon don't see us getting many home points let alone away ones, to sum up in my view the only thing on the horizon is:- relegation

its a easy place to come to when your getting free headers from corners , didnt learn from yeovil , game how many free headers did there centre half have ,would have lost that one by more if not for forde, what i dont understand if your going to play with fullbacks bombing on than where was malone, he is lot better as attacking full back , i am affaid to say its jimmy nic all over again , lomas will not get time , jb will be concerned by the 3000 of the gate , whats the next home game gate after two more defeats , sorry AA and JB GOOD PLAYERS SIGNED BUT THE COACHING STAFF ARE OUT OF THERE DEPTH , WISH THEM WELL AND MOVE ON BEFORE WE LOSE ANOTHER 3000 , I DONT WANT TO SIT IN EMPTY GROUND WITH MY KIDS , GO AND GET DYCHE JOB DONE.

Everyone has their own ideas of what should constitute Millwall's strongest side. That's all very well but other considerations have to be taken into account, such as who they are playing and how best to play against them, so tactics for a start, and making the right substitutions when necessary. I remember Gordon Jago saying "we have to give the opposition problems not the other way around". Jago also said we have to be able to brush aside the also rans in the league if we are to go places. Jago went out scouting himself to non-league sides and after watching Trevor Lee and Phil Walker who were playing I think for Sutton immediately signed them and put them both straight into the first team. Jago also wanted a good youth set-up and brought in top scouts Derek Healy and Bob Pearson.
He was ambitious and although had little to spend turned around the club's fortunes.
It seems to me that the scouting set up at the den is wanting. The tactical decisions of SL are suspect as well after taking off Easter, who in my opinion should have been in the first team from the start of the season. Why Feeney has been left out is a mystery unless he is injured. I get the impression that SL is trying to justify some of his new signings to the chairman-has he got the bottle to admit his tactics have not been working so far? Perhaps if SL tweeked around his side a bit, keeps Easter in and stops this negative long ball game he might get somewhere I hope so.

NICKOLA - I agree completely with your post. What disappoints me most is that when SL made these new signings we were all looking forward to the start of the new season thinking that he had made them with a formation in mind. Instead Martin and McDonald have never been in the starting eleven and Chaplow has been played out of position. Derry has been signed on loan who we don't need and Easter has been our best forward so far. Maybe he get substituted because he isn't one of SL's signings and he persists with Morison to justify bringing him to the club. Also, What has happened to the defence from last season because it is now another weak link. We are really in trouble if we get relegated because we are stuck with Baliey, Chaplow and McDonald on 2 year contracts. Bywater''s wages are probably compensated by releasing Taylor and Mildenhall.

If we get relegated, those new signings aren't going to be hanging around.
Pick the best eleven. Stick with it. Lomas has had enough games to determine his best team. Trouble is, it doesn't marry up with anyone else's idea of the strongest eleven. There's something wrong there.

        @NICKOLA: A Cunning Plan.
1,employ as a manager a former player of our worst and detested club.
        2,bring in strikers that couldn't hit a cows a##s with a banjo.
3,bring in old midfield players that are past their sell by date.
4,p##s off all the fans so the attendances are nil.
5,make the New Den a cold and desolate area(like the northeast)
6, lease ground to Cuadrilla for 50% of profits.
        7,move to Peckham Rye.
8, start drilling in goal areas pointing drills under illderton road towards cold blow.
9, become the richest club in the world.
10, build new ground on site of the old Den( all houses have crumbled and been demolished).

its already clear that lomas is totally out of his depth, JB and board have to take the blame for a cheap woeful appointment when there were experienced managers out of work at the time, we were told they would appoint someone with championship experience to take us forward then they get Lomas from scotland!!! also they totally disregarded the history between Millwall and West Ham and clearly have no understanding of the club or the fans, i can't see Lomas turning this round, it feels like the Spackman or Claridge circus all over again, my biggest fear is that JB is clueless and stood by jackett for far to long so we have no chance of him sacking lomas even if we lose our first 10 games, both him and that **** ambler just seem to blame the fans for everything these days including our results which i have never heard any other board of any other club do before, we are becoming a laughing stock and look certain to go down already under this West ham vermin joker!! another weekend ruined!!!!

@benzo: must admit Benzo, I'm one of life's optimists but I'm struggling to find any positives from yesterday. I thought Derry was a good signing but on yesterday's showing I'm not sure Derry and Bailey can start together as we were crying out for a ball carrying CM and some creativity. The movement up front (Easter apart) from the flanks and breaking from midfield was non existent - Dunne was our most creative player! We are crying out for Robbo at the back. Henry , Lowry and Shittu have been very poor IMO. Time for Martin, Robbo and Malone to be given a chance. I don't think the time for panic is yet and I hope that we can stick together at least for a few more games. When he was appointed I think we all knew SL would need to get a good start to win some sections of the crowd over.

Haven't managed to see a game this season (plastic fan) so i cant really contribute on performances/effort/tactics or substitutions so im not really in a position to start running my mouth off too much. I do realise that not everyone sees things the same.I have come away from the den on many an occasion hearing people s*** off player's who I've thought has played well or praising a player who I thought had a shocker. When I got in last night and read all the contributions by everyone I couldn't help but thinking that so many people can't all be wrong. Dozens of you were all saying the same things. It seems that so many decisions that Lomas made were beyond belief. I do believe that the players we have brought in should improve the squad. So the fact that it hasn't gone according to plan obviously points to the fact that maybe we have appointed a manager who is massively out of his depth. Maybe "agent Lomas " is doing a fantastic job if you're from that s*** part of London . I'm not usually one to go for knee jerk reactions when things aren't going well, after all said and done it is only three games in and I'm still prepared to give Lomas the benefit of the doubt for the time being. Although I think with the amount of p*** taking I'm gonna get tomorrow my patience may start wearing a lot thinner.

When did we become so fickle? I can't believe people on here are slagging off Shittu, 3 months after he was voted player of the year. Lomas has come in and made some incredible signings over a very short period of time, something you all used to moan at Jackett for NOT doing. Now people are moaning because he isn't starting a player who missed a whole season with injury last year over our player of the season!! Listen to yourself, you all sound ridiculous. It's very easy to point the finger, but at least try to back it up by making some sort of sense.

I was there Saturday, and the marking for the goal was sloppy. However, how many chances did Huddersfield create? 3-4 all game? We completely dominated possession and kept the ball very well. Players were working hard and linking up well - all that was missing was a goal. Had Morison put one of the half chances away or even if we scored a sloppy deflected goal from a scramble in the box, you would all be singing a very different tune.

My two cents is that we needed a few more numbers in the box going forward - there weren't enough players getting themselves into the box and gambling on forward runs. We had a lot of the ball in their half and full backs were overlapping well, but there wasn't enough movement and there were no clever runs beyond the Huddersfield back four. Is that really down to Lomas? He can only set a team out and give them instructions - he can't play the game for them.

If we are still bottom in a months' time, then lets start asking questions, but 2 weeks into the season is just knee jerk.

@StanLDN: Good post I agree with you about Danny Shittu no one can doubt his commitment to Millwall maybe he need to get a bit fitter, and it is still very early days. I just have issues about tactics and team selection. All this nonsense about West Ham is garbage and just plain irrelevant. I hope the team remain positive and united. and give it a few more games at least.

@StanLDN: well said on most points, Shittu was a hero last year but has looked suspect this. He may well become a hero again but I personally think we need Robbo as much for his passion and leadership. Just a few weeks ago SL was being lauded along with most of the signings. As he is a young manager, he might well prove to be out of his depth but now is not the time to pass judgement. I still believe we have a decent squad, better than last year and that it will take time to turn things around.

@StanLDN: i was there too, we did not dominate the game. We passed well on three or four occasions, but mainly those broke down because the crowd got restless and the players opted to hoof... it seems fans want to keep the ball but when we are keeping it the same fans are screaming "kick it forward" which in my eyes is summing it up...

when we start knocking it about the fans enjoy for about five passes then start getting restless, i would not say we dominated at all, their keeper was feeding the full backs and they passed it out from defence with hardly any pressure from forwards (easter did at times), they looked comfortable and there was plenty of movement off the ball, they put our defenders under pressure too, we however were the complete opposite until macdonald came on and started putting them under when they had the ball and straight away they wobbled... I play upfront on a sunday and if im not chasing everything my team mates scream at me.... this should be happening.

Morrison = Lazy and did not once look sharp
Easter = Looked sharp and hungry for it
MacD = Looked sharp too needs more time on the pitch
Bailey = Needs to be played into the game more

The most consistent, dangerous and faultless player on the pitch was Dunne

Much as I am passionate about Millwall, I do still prefer cricket and thankfully it's been a wonderful cricketing summer for England fans. The football won't really start to needle me until September. With any luck we'll have got going by then.

What would be nice would be for SL to involve the fans by explaining the reasons behind his decisions. You only have to read the postings on this site to see how passionate we are about our team. Surely SL should respect us by explaining what he did (ie taking Easter off) and why.

He did. He said "I wanted to get Scott McDonald on to try and get a goal" Didn't work though did it?

I said before yesterdays game that I was confused about what SL was trying to do and that it would either turn out brilliant or the biggest disaster known to man. I have now come to the conclusion that he is as confused as I am. The only difference is that he is being paid large somes of cash, to sort things out. Most people on this site agree basically where things are going wrong, the defence is weak and letting in soft goals, mid field on paper should be good, but we don't play on paper do we, stop playing people out of position. Morrison for what ever reason isn't working, why not start McDonald, or is the poor thing still not fit enough to play a whole game. I assume these players were bought in to actually play rather than warm their back sides on the bench. So play them. It can not get any worse, actually it could, but at least he would tried. Yes it is only three games in, don't panic. I do not believe , like some posters, that wait until Xmas and then if things are no better, then panic. That might be a tad too late. If things are no better then, I think a relegation battle is on the cards. For me ten games max, if we are still at the bottom of the league, then nice try SL ByeBye.

@rikkiatwall: I agree with most of what you have posted except for the ten games max, when KJ went we were left with 19 players, Henry, Trotter & and the defence apart
the rest were deadwood so SL would have needed to bring in nearly a whole new team, we were excited about the quality of player he was bringing in at the start so it will take time for them all to gel but as I said before quality will come through, it will be a frustrating time until it does though

JB hope your looking at this site SL has cost you 3000 Fans in 3 league games the longer it goes on the less fans will watch Act Now . Every game will see that 9500 get less and less.

I despair of the negativity. Ok so it's not happening at present but why add to the pain by getting on the players/managers back. Our fans used to be worth a goal start at the Den but listening to some comments the negativity will make it feel like we are a goal down. Lets try to get behind the boys despite the performances and see if it we can all work as one.

SL brought in 3 new strikers (Morison, Easter, McDonald). The only two competitive goals we have scored were from players SL inherited (Keogh, Woolford). Other championship teams have brought in new strikers (Davies at Blackpool, Church at Charlton etc.,) and they have all scored goals. I don't go along with this c**p about them not gelling or not being fit. If we are not scoring it's because SL has got his tactics wrong. Morison is not a target man, McDonald is not a supersub and Easter is not being utilised correctly. We have the players, it's time SL started using them to their strengths before we get left behind.

@Profiler4: at last someone else who realises morison isn't a target man never was when he was here first time his strength has always been running at defenders which he is not getting the chance to do give the man the ball at his feet and then if he still don't perform then start someone else up front

@davep263: spot on, Morro must be wondering when we will start playing a style that suits him. He can score if you create chances at his feet.

I was'nt a fan of bringing in Lomas, but I am a fan of Millwall. At the end of the day we have to keep backing the team. I really feel some of the players Lomas has brought in are half decent! Lomas needs to find his best 11 and start playing it.. The squads looking a lot better this season than last and we could still have a decent season. We have got to be realistic staying in this league is a good season, anything higher than mid table is a bonus...COYL

I am sure no one really believed that we would go from the dross of last season to great football this season without some time being needed. I am not worried so long as we show progress and that is what is happening albeit slowly .
