Lomas mulls over tactical changes after limp Ipswich display

MANAGER Steve Lomas is considering changing Millwall's formation and playing Richard Chaplow in a more central role after his side's defeat to Ipswich Town.

Lomas has used a 4-4-2 in the Lions' opening three matches of the season but could tinker with his system ahead of the visit of Huddersfield to The Den next Saturday.

Fans that travelled to Portman Road to see Millwall lose 3-0 were frustrated with the long-ball tactics on display, as well as Chaplow's positioning on the left wing.

And Lomas said: "We'll look at whether or not we can get Chappy inside a little bit more.

"You cannot always play tippy-tappy football if teams are pushing on you, but that doesn't mean we should be lumping it forward. There needs to be some movement and width to get the balls through to the forwards.

"Analysing the game in the cold light of day, the really disappointing thing was that we got to 0-0 at half-time, started well but then conceded, and that put us on the back foot.

"It's difficult when they have got two forwards up, they are pushing on you and they are tight in midfield – you can't always play short, short balls. In the first half our movement up front probably wasn't what you would want. You looked at their two [David McGoldrick and Daryl Murphy] and their movement was causing us problems.

"I felt we could get down the sides of them, but we didn't – they actually got down the sides of us. That's something we've got to look at if we're playing two up front. If we're not getting down the sides when we've got two up front, you have to ask questions."

Asked whether he was concerned by his players' fitness, Lomas said: "Whichever way you look at it, when you concede goals in the manner we did, it just doesn't look good. We've got to look at all avenues."

Lomas also confirmed that the Lions now need to trim their wage bill after a busy summer of incomings: "We'll probably have to get a few out, that's for certain," he said.

"There's nothing close right now, but that may change closer to the transfer deadline. I can't make clubs take players – they either want them or they don't – but we have good lads here."

At least he's not going to persist with Chaplow on the wing.
As for the deadwood, the fact that no one has come in for any of them gives you an idea what he's inherited. Going to have to get on the blower to other clubs, and do a Redknapp...........

The only thing SL needs to mull over is Millwall are taking on deadwood from the division and they'll be this years whipping boys.

One teams 'deadwood' are another teams stars. Hopefully and as we know, our deadwood are only really good enough for the lower divisions, so perhaps they should be looking there or perhaps, even better Charlton. ;0)

The encouraging thing is that SL is prepared to admit he got it wrong - we spent the back end of last season blind to what was happening and only just got away with it. Confident that he will turn it round but looks like he is going to have to do it with what we've got.

change of tactics a good move imo.
just been looking at the two goals against wimbledon, didnt seem much in the way of celebration from the two scorers didnt look very pleased about scoring at all.
perhaps the enthusiasm is just not there.

What does he mean we will look to see if we can get Chappy inside a bit more, he bought him as a centre mid player not a winger, so why does he persist in using the KJ scholl of putting a new player out wide no matter what there position.

So its difficul when they go 2 up front (welcome to the real world) then thats what I thought you signed Shaun Derry for to win the ball in that position and pass it so we can move forward, rather than the ususll boot up the middle.

Regarding players fittness can beleive we are still talking about this after thay have been back at the club for at least 5 weeks and never mind about looking at other avenues it seems to me that you are down a cul-de-sac where your picking of you side is concerned.

Also have you just realised that we need to trim the wage bill as we have such a large squad of which there are several players who are on top dollar money and they seem to be the ones who are not preforming, all I know is that this side does play like a real wall side and you can forget about JB want 15,000 at home games, if we keep turning in below standard displays like the last two league games.

@Barnlion: Yep, I've worked with loads of people like this, they say all the right things in front of all the right people but when it comes down to it they don't deliver on anything. This was my concern when reading Lomas' early sound bites. He needs to be given a chance though, see where we are on 28th September, after Leeds at home. 13 points plus will see us nicely placed, after all we are only three points worse off than at this stage last year!

He does seem to be obsessed with midfield players, when we could do with others in different positions like full backs, and forwards who are not afraid to put the ball in the F*****G net, maybe he is looking to the future when stands a the canidate for Bermonsey in the General Election, has a nice ring that Millwall manager and MP for Bermondsey.

In any other business what normally happens is that you play to your strengths and with us at the minute you would have say that its arguably our midfield? so why don't he play 5 in midfield? But don't ask a striker to play in a more disciplined way when we are under the kosh coz that wont happen, but you will get the likes of Henry, Martin and Chaplow happy to push on when asked and be disaplined when needed. I would sacrifice a striker for 5 proper midfielders with 1 or 2 of them given license to be attacking. Rotate the strikers if needed.

    .......................Bywater
    Dunne, Robinson, Beevers, Malone
    ....................... Derry,
    ............Bailey...........Chaplow
    Henry........................................Martin
    .......................Morison

MAKE the defenders play from the back and utilise the quality that we have in our midfield. I don't know why everyone insists on 2 up top? that just promotes lumping long most of the time and being so predictable.

new to the sit, but I agree on most of the selection but I would have Mcdonald in behind morison.
He has good technical ability and can be the type of person to get in the hole between their midfield and defence and create the link and space for the others. Have derry plotting on front of the back four and tell him to be a crab i.e. move sideways only with bailey, chaplow and martin/henry having the freedom to get forward and link the play. therefore my selection would be
      Bywater
      Dunne, Robinson, Beevers, Malone
      Derry,
      martin/henry.....bailey......chaplow
      McDonald
      Morison

Agree with your back four but Bailey, Derry and Chaplow in the middle with Henry and Martin on the wings supporting midfield and McDonald. Can't put Chaplow out wide, it's proven as not working.

        Alternatively,
        Bywater Marshall
Dunne Smith Shittu Robinson Beevers Osborne Lowry Malone
Henry Feeney Bailey Derry Chaplow Martin
        Easter Keogh Morison McDonald
An 8 6 4 formation which should stop the rot on Saturday!!

@Windy: yeah, i'd go with that although sad that people have written Jimmy off. If you were going to play that formation, don't see what Derry has that Jimmy doesn't and no reason why jimmy couldn't play a defensive midfield role infront of the defence.

There are two sides to this. One could be that Lomas has bull-sh*tted his way into getting the job. As some have pointed out, he talks the talk. I hope he does prove us wrong.

The other side is that as well as KJ did for us, we did finish the season with one of the worst runs since we were relegated from the old top flight. Derry aside (who I think is a decent player even at his age) - I would have taken on all the players we have signed. The side needed and overhaul and now looks fairly good on paper. I think the fact that no enquiries for our out of favour players shows just how bad our squad got last season.
Marquis/DNG/Dunne/Woolford/Smith/Wright/Abdou are back up for this division/league one. As they are on championship contracts, I would guess they are proving hard to ship out.

I honestly don't get why Lomas is on the hook. He can only play players who are fit. Chaplow was the best, fully fit fit left mid on Saturday. I think some players need to pull their fingers out (Moro, Henry). Lomas is doing all the right subs it just isn't clicking at the moment. He has made our squad very exciting and at last we have some degree of strength in depth. Give Lomas a break, he clearly isn't one who gives up 9 days in to a season!

@Alan.F: Finally someone seems to have an ounce of positivity in them! We had a bad start last year and went on a good run. Got to playoff spots by half way through season. Once we get a couple of goals our strikers will get confidence and that is all you need for the team. Wood did it for us last year, and how good did Henry and Trotsky look then??

Bomber should be doing target practice with the attacking midfielders and the forwards. start off with something big like a barn and if any missis then bomber should take a 5yd penalty at a bear backside. The amount of missis weve had in the past 3 games is ridicules. So as well as stopping the rot at the back we need to be finishing too i could live with 5 wins at 3-2 .... COYL!!!!!!!!!

I think we all need to get to grips here. Ex West Ham or not. Can someone please tell me what difference it makes where someone made a living ? Lomas didn't score the goal that got us relegated nor did he score two in the last minute to deprive us of FA Cup final glory. He hasn't murdered anyone either.
If he'd come from somewhere else would we still be so vitriolic ? Give me a break.
We're two games into a long season. New players, new manager, new background staff. It's going to take time but it will be ok.
Don't get me started on what Jackett left behind because NO ONE wants them.
What Lomas and Millwall need right now is US backing them all the way..

Any time now it's going to all click and we will start winning. Then just as teams begin to work us out, trotter will come back and have a his best season yet (I hope).

Let's give him time. He inherited a squad that performed badly last year, were low in confidence and according to reports there were conflicts in the dressing room. I don't think any of us disagree with where he has tried to strengthen us and we have all been excited by most of his recruits. He has practically had to start from scratch. The players are at different stages of fitness due to a number of factors. IMO the last thing we need to do is panic - SL needs a chance to put his stamp on the team and the way we play and the players need a chance to get to know each other.

I would like to see Morison and Henry start on the bench Saturday. Hope it would gee them up a bit. I would also like to see Bailey given the captaincy to lead by example, and also to ball the w****** out when they start to sulk. It is early days but they do need to give us something so we can actually be motivated to get behind them for the whole game not just iscolated bits of it.

@Windsor Lion: Good idea making Bailey the captain. He and Chaplow are the only ones to give 100% every minute they’re on the pitch. Danny boy just isn’t going it at the moment and I don’t see why they/we always think the captaincy should go to a defender. I can understand now why they initially only wanted to give Shitts a one season contract instead of two.

@REAL Supporter: Real yes I agree with your words of wisdom, will you offer your services to the club as you are stateing the bloody obvious, but the management cant seem to fathom it, or certain players are not playing as instructed by them, either way its up to SL to put it right one or another a.s.a.p.

@Barnlion: Agree with you Barn, totally agree. Got a horrible feeling about Saturday. Don't think it will be a repeat of the result as the same fixture as last season.

You all need to cool down, it would be a bit rude if he come in and we started winning every game, got to give the other teams a chance 🙂

Shaun derry can play at right back. This could be a possibility if Lomas want's to start Bailey & Chaplow in the Central midfield positions.
