Exclusive: Millwall chasing Middlesbrough right-back Hoyte

MILLWALL boss Steve Lomas wants to sign Middlesbrough defender Justin Hoyte – but must make space in his wage budget before he can push ahead with a deal.

Hoyte was left out of Boro's squad for their win over Charlton on Saturday and it is believed the 28-year-old is keen to return to London, where he began his career with Arsenal.

Lomas has made his interest known to counterpart Tony Mowbray, who would be willing to let Hoyte move on if an offer was forthcoming, be it on loan or on a permanent basis.

But the Lions have to move players out before they can strengthen any further. Lomas is also keen to bring in a left winger but his priority for now is to clear the decks.

Hoyte made 31 appearances in the Championship for Boro last season.

Lomas is still monitoring Bolton's Tyrone Mears, who he hopes could change his mind about a loan move to The Den.

RB isn't the problem, a LW should be a bigger priority if Lomas wants to play 4-4-2, Don't understand why he doesn't play 4-3-3 with Martin/Keogh on the wing not Chaplow

Looks like Lomas is paying attention and starting to see what everyone else except Jackett could see last season. Dunne, although has given good service to Millwall is not up to it at this level. As for Smith, I've never rated him. In fairness I'd rather keep Dunne at the Den as he is great when it comes to man marking. Remember Tarrabt or whatever his name is v QPR and Zaha for palace. In his pocket all game long. He should be the back up we need once a stronger rb is brought in. For me, smith's days are numbered. Okay, now to look for a centre half. COYL.

I rate Henry, on form and on his day he is a quality wide man with a good final ball. But all I've seen of him this season is skying shots over the bar. In both games he's missed the target with keeper in no mans land. Feeney seemed to have a half decent pre-season and Keogh can do a job out there. Think Henry needs to be dropped. just give him a kick up the backside.

This winger talk is b******* we clearly need full backs more so! Look at the goals we conceded yesterday - left wing we have Martin, woolford and dare I say N'Guessan at right back we have a mediocre Dunne and fat bloke called jack smith who looks more at home on a building site than in a 'Wall shirt!!

And does anybody rate Justin Hoyte?! Personally I don't think he's anything more than quick! We're basically taking the guy Boro are replacing with a player we could have signed weeks ago!!

Slowly but surely Lomas is replacing last seasons starting eleven. I think he's realised that now he's brought in players to boost the midfield and attack to rectify the problems in that area from last season, that the defence isn't up to it. Dunne and Smith offer cover but in my opinion they're not championship full backs. If he wants Hoyte, he's obviously going to have to get a move on and outgoings will now start immediately. We don't need a left winger-what's the point in signing Martin-and Chaplow didn't sign on to play there I'm sure. In any case he's totally wasted in that position. What we do need is 6 players out and some defenders in. Going to take time to settle but he must then pick his strongest eleven, play them in position and stop tinkering.

Probably. Trouble is no points from two games and already Lomas is under pressure. I'm really sure he's no quitter and also sure the weaknesses he inherited do need do need addressing urgently. He knows right now who he is going to try and get shot of and its no secret he's been looking at fullbacks for weeks.

He needs to change the whole defence rb lb one ch don't forget the 4 playing there now played in a team at some time or another last season that could hardly win a match after the new year. Not only that we have a manager making excuses about refs Chaplow was offside we had a better view than Lomas on our side of the pitch. Whether it was our throw or theirs you still have to defend it properly. Pause for thought Lomas on th wages your paying Morrison you could have brought in 7 or 8 players on £2000 a week from lower leagues or Scotland

Hoyte is on a downward spiral..When he played for the Gunners the supporters I know said he was not good enough...now the most boring team in world don't want him
Lets just take stock for a moment. .we cant change everyone. .I must be hearing things when the lions fans around me talk about Smith, he's a good passer of the ball, played well when he got a chance with KJ
This was said amongnst the fans. As for Dunne he tries to give 100% when he plays, but when you get a lazy git like Henry playing in front of you he's left exposed. Ok get a RB but not Hoyte. Henry out, play Chaplow in the middle and for christ sake stop panicking. The wins will come.

We are a team in transition simple as and I agree it will take game time for them to gel... it was only weeks ago every signing made was golden and we were gonna shock the league... its still early days...

Henry only plays when he wants to and that has happened since he arrived and not just this season. The fans know this.
If he believes he's bigger than the club and we can't do without him, he needs to re assess his commitment. I sit there watching him every home game and know within 10 mins if he's turned up or not. He needs to sort it or go

All very well but none of this excuses the ineptness of Lomas so far. Might be able to organise a good signing but I wish he could organise a decent team performance. Three games in with better personnel (in theory) and looking worse than last year.

No doubt about the fact that the seasons squad, on paper, are superior to last years. The problems are many. I don't know how a professional footballer can not be fit after 4 weeks unless he's been pubbing it all summer. Last year, from January onwards it was plain that the defence was leaking like a seive. Lomas came in and assumed-obviously incorrectly-that the defence was good enough. Two games in and that's changed. Rightly in my opinion because the full backs are crap and I'm not a big fan of Shittu either.

@NICKOLA: I just think that he has too many changes happening too soon, it's not a sign of a manager that has confidence in his players. Bring Dunney and Robbo back in to stabilise the back four and work on integrating the new attacking players.

What Lomas and Berylson are trying to do is make sure we don't remain in last seasons position again, they have bought in some good players but it will take time to gel. I think some fans have a clouded view of players like Dunne, Smith, Lowry, Abdou, Keogh N'Guessan, Wright and even Shittu but the fact remains while they are honest players they might not be good enough. Lowry is a classic example he is a quality centre back and even does a good job at left back but is he a Championship class left back (not compared to Shorey) todays left back must offer just as much attacking threat as defensive capabilities. Jimmy is one of my favourite Millwall players always gives 110% and we are a better team with him but can we afford a defensive midfielder who offers little in the way of an attacking threat. Shittu on his day is immense but he is making too many mistakes at the moment, mistakes that are costing us. It is easy to blame Lomas but can you compensate for errors, look at yesterday all three goals were poor and while the strikers have to do their bit at this level we have to take our chances and not give away stupid goals.

If this run continues and Lomas goes I fear for us. We are in a period of transistion and we WILL come good but patience is the key.

Kapo is on trial according to the Mirrow, we need a winger. BUT are any of the players SL signing any better than who are there now? Bailey a definite yes but up front there is little change. I rather Easter Feeney and yes N'Guessan at the moment!

At the moment I am totally confused, what SL is currently doing is either going to be brilliant or the biggest disaster known to man. I have been to all three games so far, the only player that I reckon is what Millwall want is Bailey. It has highlighted that the likes of Wright and Abdou are not good enough, Smith and Dunne I am not sure about. Robinson is up to the challenge and should play. What the **** is Morrison up to? No effort, nothing, why hasn't SL had a really strong word in his ear. When are we going to see what McDonald can do? Why has Henry stopped playing? All the players that SL has bought in are those that very few people want. Are there no players in the lower leagues that have fire and passion to move up. Now we are looking at another Mobray reject, why, can this bloke do a better job than what we have already. SL please explain to me what you are doing. Confused of Peckham

@benzo: Why N'Guessan? He hasn't even played in the first team this season? When he came on in the testimonial he looked sharp and layed off some good balls. He and Easter combined well, At least both are fit and look as though they want to playe and score. Morison seems be be going through the motions at the moment.

i do not see any quality in lowry as a left back, slow ,clumsey, crude, cant pass . even less as a centre back , i would not want him making tackles in the box, too many unneessary fouls for my likeing, we need robbo or someone like him, wins headers and tackles without fouling ,thats quality

Do we really need a right back ? Yes of course we do.
Does it mean the end of the rd for Dunne ?
of course not. He proved he's got a little left in the tank as of when required for cover.
It's not a good start to the season in fact it's the worst since 82 but hey ho. When he came in he said and rightly so that everyone has a clean slate, 3 competitive games later I'm pretty sure he knows what's really needed and who's up to standard. We've all over the past couple weeks expressed our opinions on what we have, what we need and who should be shown the door, so now stevie low is more or less singing from the same sheet and fortunately we still have a couple weeks of the transfer window left to get people out and replacements in. We moaned like f*** about KJ doing all his business in the loan market now we have got some perms in early it still is not good enough for some. I reckon we'll see a massive improvement on performance and personnel over the coming weeks if not then it'll be adios to stevie lo start of jan. I for one do not want that to happen cause it'll mean we'll be at the bottom. 2 games in we're -4 without a goal or point with pretty much last seasons dross, by the start of September we'll hopefully have got rid of at least 70% of last seasons squad. Unfortunately we will not know if the new one is going to be any better.
One things for sure at least he's identifying the weak links and their potential replacements.

Got that right Luke. rikkiatwall says he isn't sure whether it's going to be brilliant or a total disaster. The total disaster was the squad that Lomas inherited. We were all salivating at the new signings. They haven't become crap after 2 games and some of them haven't even got 90 mins under their belts yet. I'm going for brilliant as long as the defence is tightened up-Robinson in for Shittu and new full backs. I still think Lowry is a better centre half than a left back but accept that he might be a bit too reckless in the penalty box. 2 weeks to make changes, the deadwood now have to go to pay for them so that's a no brainer as to who is going to be leaving. Morison needs either a friendly word or a major kick up the bottle or I'd leave him on the bench, and I'm his biggest fan.If Lomas gets rid of, brings in some good ones then it's going to take time. Time is something he doesn't have but I'm an eternal optimist and I truly believe it's going to be ok.

Footballing centre half should be no. 1 priority. Possession stats I saw yesterday were 66/34%. If they are true and we continue in that vein we will go down. The gist of posts of people who went are that Lomas is playing long ball. Scary stuff. I think he'll.get it right in time and I'm still looking at a max 13 points after nine games. If we hit that we'll be fine.

Not that I'm moaning with new the additions to Midfield. However have we all forgotten that we was on amazing form and hadn't lost a game for roughly 12-13 matches. This was achieved with a similar squad only with the additions of Three QUALITY players that were worth every bit of money, Chris Wood, Chris Taylor and the tank Darius Henderson. I personally would have not bothered with the signing of McDonald, Morison, Easter as its just a waste of time, Being Lomas I would have gone out and used my "gift of the gab" to a premier league striker who is no longer in their teams plans, along with a another maybe (billy sharp). The only problem is that the team needs a proper structure to build on. And as everyone will agree the teams main problem is that they just hoof it and pray, instead of creating a string of passes which will lead to more chances, thus creating goals. As for the players that need to be gone I would have to say; Shittu and Woolford for now...

If morison gets the ball to his feet he would be a handful as he was before and at canary world. The long ball is bypassing the new midfielders lomas has bought and morison cant/wont out jump a midget.I also think its a kick in the teeth for chaplow to see derry brought in and play in his position.

Lomas is either throwing money at a very innate and disturbing ethos at the club which prevents good players from gelling (And hoping it goes away) , or he's clearing up a MASSIVE void left by Jackett.

Got to say lads, I'm undecided about what it is we're looking at with all these signings and transfers.

Well I'm home from a weekend away and have just watched the Ipswich goals. A shambles at the back is the only way to describe it. Shittu gone walkabout for the first again, felt sorry for Lowry trying to cover the gaps and Shittu easily beaten for the second. He really is a limited centre half. The third is just a complete mess, defence all over the place, Beevers just embarrasing. Posters can call out Henry, Morison et al but if you ship poor goals you've got no chance. Need Robbo back 100% as soon as possible AND a new footballing centre half (have I said that yet? (-:~).

I agree with various comments made on here regarding who to go and what we need but my opinion would be ... Yes the defence needs a shake up weather that be mixing it up with (more) new players or swiftly kicking them up the a**e. i seriously hope we dont find us in a situation where were chasing safety round christmas time rather than chasing a playoff place. And as for henry i personally still thinks he deserves that sacred millwall shirt 1 poor or half hearted performance doesnt make a bad season. And as for Mr Lomas ill admit i was among the mob that said f••k off but he has turned up mixed it up and got a big majority of us on here excited .... He still has my backing to consolidate the team this season and push for top half finish. Plus my nails aint grown back properly from last season (and saturday didnt help either) 🙁

'Despite a slow start to the 2012–13 season after many changes to the squad - 12 players were out of contract during the summer - St Johnstone had an excellent September, drawing with Dundee United and winning the next four matches, the first against Celtic, ending Ross County's 40 game unbeaten run and beating rivals Dundee, as well as reaching the quarter finals of the Scottish League Cup. On 4 October 2012, Lomas was named SPL Manager of the month'.

    We live in hope!

Please Please Please buy Justin Hoyte!
He rarely passes the half way line,
when he does he can`t get back,
he can`t take a man on,
can`t get to the by-line to make a cross,
    can`t take a corner,
can`t be bothered to get into a game,
& most of all he CAN`T DEFEND!!!!

Mind you he`s always got 10 out of 10 for sulking!!

We have another clown you can have for free too. Starvin Marvin Emnes.
Boro fans will have a whip round to pay for a taxi for him, both need to be run out of town.

TWO lazy, lazy men with no heart, guts or talent.

Having not seen any of the games yet I think hopefully the best is to come from him. And perhaps SL is waiting for Keogh and Morison to fail before he lets McDonald loose!
        Well lets hope so anyway!

Sounds like those two will walk into the team.
