Always look for a quality #10 (Mesi, Pele, Maradonna) and now we have Bailey!!!!!
SL has got to get rid of some, 32 players is a massive squad

Really interested to see Easter and Wright in the first 11, SL must rate them and from all accounts both have done themselves no harm in preseason. I still hope that we will see Wright nail down a starting place as he really knows how to spot a pass. As for Easter, never let us down last season and with fitness who knows what he is capable of?

@glyngo: Easter and Wright won't be starters. Good player Easter and great on bench but Wright just don't have enough to cut it at this level - too lightweight - too slow - not strong in the tackle - and doesn't use his best attribute anywhere often enough. He'll either go on loan or transfer to League 1

@Old_Les: I just ticked the like box and then saw it was my old mate Les! - agree with you 150% on Wright - and Easter for that matter! IMO could do with moving out 3 or 4 players and I'm sure we all know the likely candidates, and still think there's room for a couple of additions. With the youngsters making up the numbers, I think we are only one or two first team players away from where we want to be in terms of numbers. I'm hoping that the new quality in midfield can inspire Trotter to be the player we know he can and should be; that would be like another quality signing!

Take away the youngster who won't feature much if at all plus the couple of players that are hopeless and it isn't that big a squad. Room for one or two more I think and would not be at all surprised (not pleased) if Keogh were soon out the door - especially if rumours are true we are sniffing around other front players.

I agree that would be a shame, but Keogh needs to refind his form and soon if he wants to start. agree with you though that if we stick with what we've got and then lose Keogh, we are stil a bit light upfront with McDonald/Morrison/Marquis (Loaned out?) and Easter@Old_Les:

@NICKOLA: Can't see it myself now. Think a far more likely scenario is Bristol City keep him and to afford it they offload Baldock to us on a year loan which wouldn't light me up as would far sooner have Keogh. But I feel Keogh doesn't really have his heart in any football club let alone Millwall and would sooner be in the Midlands where he has his house. If Peterborough want N'Guessan I'll drop him off myself. Hope Marquis goes on loan and gets better because he deserves it - only needs to develop a first touch, bit of strength and stop falling over looking for free kicks like some greasy dago at Brighton. I also hope Jackett offers us 100k for Abdou because I'd bite his hand off. Woolford's a good squad player, Osborne will be a good centre back one day and Malone will turn out to be a player.

I preferred the days when players didn't have squad numbers. The starting eleven were numbered numbers 1 to 11 and 1 was the Goalkeeper, 2 the Right Back, 3 the Left Back etc. If the usual 1st team Goalkeeper was injured then the reserve who replaced him in the next game wore the number 1 shirt. If you are not familiar with the players of the opposing team its confusing to see a player wearing number 16 playing in centre of defence like we have with Beevers for instance or 27 (Mc Donald) playing uo front.

Seems a far better squad in terms of strength and depth than last year, especially as it may be a long hard season. How long ago did we have 5 recognised forwards? It looks a very attack minded side.
Like to see some youth added later on but the team has to gel first which will take a few games no doubt.@ksnaith98: He's a young right back and played for West Ham U 18's. He played for Millwall XI against Canvey Island on 15th July result 2-2. he was mentioned in a report in the Echo " Canvey struck first blood when former Colchester United man Tom Bender misjudged a long kick forward by keeper Dale Brightly, allowing Jay Curran to steal in and lob the advanced Andy Marshall.
But Lions were soon level as Josh Siafa drive in a wicked cross which Brightly spilled into the path of John Marquis, and he accepted the gift from six yards.
Marquis then turned provider as he sprung a very high line to beat the offside trap and then cut back from Niall McManus to scramble home at the second attempt. "
      Siafa must have signed.

Josh Siafa is a right back who plays in our development squad. No idea where he came from but think he is only 18.

Bender is a left back who was part of the Colchester academy and was released by them. Signed for us in March 2013.

It's a real shame Makandawire got that injury. He would have definitely been in the side still, but he clearly isn't the player he was.

With all the positivity, and not tryin to dampen anyone's spirits, does anyone know how long JB intends to hang around?

Do you think this could be one last push towards the premiershit?

Do you think he may be thinking, stuff it, lets give it a go and I can always walk away in a year or so?

If that happens to be the case we will be right up the swanny.

And I would hate to see a return to those very dark days

I get the feeling that he may pass the club on to one of his kids as they have one on the board already. I am i danger of being naive but i think he sees this as one of his community projects, through the club he puts something back into society. Almost too good to be true, i know.

@canadianlion: I am also a long standing Lions supporter, first started in 1960. I agree that the way to reward SL for his efforts in making such a positive start is to show our appreciation at the turnstiles (see I told you I was old). This season could rank alongside some of our best ever (anyone remember being top of the old Division 1 with Everton and Chelsea in our slipstream). In a year or two it could happen again with the class of players SL is bringing in.

I know we have Martin, Woolford & Nguessen, but compared to the rest of our midfield i think we are short on quality on the left. If rumours are to be believed we are in the hunt for Rowe from Peterborough? I think he's a lefty and would finish off our midfield rebuild nicely? Have you heard anything about that one Alex or NIKOLA?

I hope so, but i think Lomas rates N'guessen. We have Feeney and Henry on the right with Martin and Woolford on the left...feels a little lop sided to me as Woolford is not of the quality we need and with what i've seen of him Martin will want to cut in all the time onto he's favored right foot and he has already admitted he prefers playing down the middle. So a natural wide left midfielder is what we need to balance the formation that's if he plays a 442 of course.

It's funny in a way. Like fixing the midfield and forward line is akin to replacing that dodgy hose near your car radiator and then all the others start playing up. Now everyone's talking about the defense!!

New to site,1st Millwall game back in 1969.Best Millwall site for information, views.Like others have said, cannot remember better calibre of signings for a while (late 1980`s?) or ever.SL really seem to be doing what KJ failed to do in his last season - bring in better players and hopefully soon get rid of some deadwood.32 players in squad seems too many, would rather have around 22-25 with quality being the key word.

I went to the Bromley game, the only player Millwall had was number 8, which I think was Fred. The rest were outplayed by Bromley. They had a very fast lad up front who looked dangerous, apparently released by Southend.

@Longfield Lion: He certainly did Longfield Lion, 2007 he got 2 caps, against Brazil and then Germany, not a bad baptism. I do hope we sign him. A team player, and a grafter always gives 100% cant ask for more than that. Would be a big asset. Come on SL give him the pen.

Out of interest, if you sign Shorey, what will you do about Lowry. He won't get a centreback slot with our current CB's, and we already have Malone sitting on the bench waiting for his chance. I like Shorey but the problems that will cause within the squad might end up forcing Lowry out of the club....just thought it worth mentioning.@Longfield Lion:

Does anyone know how many we've sold for the game on Saturday? Looking forward to it. Went to the Gills game last week and was already pleased with what I saw, esp. first half. As someone else has said, the game on Saturday will be a sterner test, and it will be a better measure of how we're going into the new season.

@Longfield Lion: Yes fair point about Lowry, I still believe not as good as Shorey, as many have said his discipline isn't tip top, but if Malone has potential keep them both and Shorey. There are others in the squad that are surplus to requirements. Injuries, suspension etc may necessitate the three. Perhaps Malone could also become a utility player.

Shorey is a no for me, because he is on a 5 figure wage , yes we got a lot of good signings and I think getting LB on them sort of wages isn't a priority. Lowry is still young and has room for improvement and gets the job done.if we sideline him, he will go, I don't think Shorey will be a sustainable signing

@conor: Fair point, if SL cant negotiate a salary then someone has to work on Lowrys discipline, timing and distribution and make him push forward more when the opportunity arises. Also putting foot on ball instead of hoofing.

@hants lion: absolute right, Lowry is too good to let go and he will not want to sitithe be. He is also young and has time to improve. Does need to improve attacking runs and quality distribution but when he does he looks a very good LB. Malone will run out of patience if not given a chance.

Judging by then signings we have had I think there's gonna be few impatient players. We have quite a few Central midfielders so id imagine theres going to be a few unhappy players around. I still don't know what's gonna happen with our Centre backs whether Shittu and Beevers will remain (personally I think so) but Robbo is a great defender as well so it's going to be difficult choices for SL but at least we have them choices!

He came to us as a centre half and ended up at left back because we had no one else!

A bit late in the day but I'm joining the shorey/Lowry debate
Personally shorey is the better player, more experience, is a leftback, has much better positional sense, is more disciplined and has much better distribution.
Lowry is the opposite, is a center half and worth a few bob which would free up some decent funds if needed in January which I think will be needed either to have a push for play offs or to keep away from the bottom 3.
Don't get me wrong I really like Lowry but we all know some need to go.
The ones we want gone dng, mw and jw will not earn us any funds and the 3 of em probably wouldn't cover bailey and chaplow's combined wage and it could take a while to find them clubs. Noticed abdou mentioned a few times and I must admit it really pains me but I'll have to agree. He's served us well and I'll love him forever one of my favourite ever players but its time to shake hands and be honest to the bloke. He won't struggle to find another club and I reckon we could pick up a couple hundred k. Marquis o'brien and a few youngsters need to go out on loan for the season and see how they progress. It's all only my opinion but i can't see how we would get some decent money in for the players we need gone but something very soon will have to give. Oh and we need a right back before the Yeovil game as we have no adequate cover should anything happen to Dunne and shoot me for it but I'd go for a young pacy energetic type on loan - initially - and have him first choice with Dunne as cover, yes he's millwall and deserved all the praise in the world for his heroics last season but he's millwall and that's what we do, it doesn't mean he's going to do it all again this season. Just think we need better and younger.
It's looking good though. Roll on Saturday so I can have a look at this new set up of ours.

@lukesmithmfc: Fully agree with you there Luke, but think you have been a bit optimistic on the valuation of Lowery. I do worry on how Shittu will play this season and was wondering if Lowery would be a better bet and try and cash in on Shittu. He had a great season but how long can he keep it up ? He got himself a new contract on the strength of it but wonder about his motivation. on a few occasions last season he looked vulnerable on the ground and lacking a bit in mobility. Hope I'm wrong but it's just a thought. Any thoughts ?

One more thing before I get tucked up in me duvet, I would want 1.5/2m for Lowry and I'll play hard ball over it. If they want him then they'll have to pay.

We got 2m for Cahill, when Villa openly offered 3.5m the season before we sold. We sold Thatcher, Reid, Kennedy, Keller, Neill and more I have probably missed on the cheap. We always seem to sell badly in comparison to the likes of palace for whatever reason??? That being said I would imagine we would get 500k max for Lowry.

@JonnyBanks: I've always been p***** off with the way we sell I remember Everton offering 1m + Peter beagrie for jimmy carter who we sell 6 months later for 800k Cunningham and goodman combined 2.5m Blackburn offered 3m for thatcher before we sold him. Sherringham should have gone for more as should cascarino. Cahill must go down as one of the best ever prem bargains that was bad business by us and the timing was shocking. If we are to sell anyone then fortunately we're in a position that we don't necessarily have to sell an asset as we have in the past the books should be ok and for once the manager should get the transfer fee received rather than a small percentage. How times have changed.
Don't agree with Lowry's 500k value though. If that's his value then I wouldn't bother selling, I'd give him another chance to see if he improves if he does then his value goes up if not then he'll then be worth about 500k but I do reckon he's worth 1.5m at the min.

@lukesmithmfc: While on the subject of Cascarino have you read his book ? its quite illuminating. Apart from being a pisshead his knees were shot and had to have injections just to get him playing, so it was unlikely we would have got much more for him. He was one of my favourite players. Its a good read though.

Lowry is better suited as a centre half in my opinion. Robbo is still some way off being fully fit, which leaves Shittu and Beevers and if one of them gets injured we don't really have cover. If we could sign a left back, Lowry could always double up there if need be. I see no reason to sell Lowry as he's capable of covering two positions.

Wasn't Beezers playing left back as well last year? I agree we should keep Lowry as CH/LB but I think Shorey would bring some class to the defence. We can't have anough quality players at the club, something we have missed for years, and if the less quality players are fed up, so be it. Not many teams with low quality win championships. I have mentioned before, but Dunne is a real liability (he is my pet hate) and I quite liked Adam Smith when he was here, he made a couple of mistakes, but nothing compared to Dunne. Get him back on loan if possible. IMO

Regarding trimming our squad and a few points regarding whats been stated on the latter part of the feed:

Why would we be looking to get rid of the likes of Abdou? think about it, if Bailey gets injured who would cover and who would push the likes of bailey to perform? Get rid of Abdou and you lose competition for places. The same goes for Martin Woolford he's cover/competition for Martin, Josh Wright/Liam Trotter for Chaplow, Jack Smith for Dunney and Malone for Lowry etc, etc.
Also, we need quality in depth as well as the starting line up. The manager needs different options coming off the bench if plan b isn't working.
The only players leaving are ones that are NOT seen as strategic replacements for first teamers or players that the manager sees as needing time and 1st team football to develop in the lower leagues.
My point is just because we have gone out and brought in a better calibre of player, it doesn't mean that we need to sell quality of the likes of Abdou, Keogh, Lowry or Trotter. Its a long hard season and teams with strong squads are the ones that sustain a promotion challenge(not that i think we will) or finish in a respectable league position so to build on the following.

Can wait for the season to start, Also really looking forward to tomorrow and Robbo's testimonial...COYL

@Windy: Agree with some of the points, but if Plan A/B isn't working players like Abdou aren't good enough to change a game. I have admired Jimmy Abdou in the past, my son has a picture of him on his wall, but he can't pass the ball 10yds and if we trim some of the squad it frees up wages &/or cash for a better qaulity player. I belive Trotter will be an asset this year when he is fit, and if we get Shorey, then the likes of Malone will be third choice behind Lowry for the LB position, and theres plenty of cover if they both get injured. Most clubs in the Championship and Prem are looking for pace is all positions and that is where we are lacking in defence. IMO

@beedoscores: Beedo i agree with your points, but I may not of explained myself properly...What i was saying is that alot of the comments on here have been about trimming the squad because its too big and that we should allow players like Abdou go to help trim the wage bill etc due to the new expensive arrivals. But if we allow the likes of Abdou go cos there is no room for him in the starting 11, who will challenge the new, better quality player coming in? There will be no back up or competition for players if that was to happen. The points raised earlier on this story was about trimming the wage bill and size of the squad, not adding better back up/squad players!

SL and Harford have said that they want to improve the quality and size of the squad, your not going to find another Bailey or Chaplow that are willing to sit on the bench. A player like Abdou would and he would be a reasonable replacement as a defensive midfielder if needed. Do you get my point? your defeating the object if you allow Abdou go because if Bailey, who will arguably play the role that Jimmy is currently playing gets injured who will replace bailey if Abdou goes, Jack Smith or McManus? This is my point....

@Windy: I see your point, and understand that we need a good strong squad with competition. My point is that Abdou isn't competition for Bailey, Chaplow, Trotter, and he can't play anywhere else. If we could move on JA, DNG and Woodford, that would allow maybe two better players to come in who would be competition. And we def need quality at RB, our weekest position by far. It is all about opinions I know.
