Millwall manager holding talks with summer transfer targets

STEVE LOMAS says he is working non-stop behind the scenes to bring in new players this summer – but he will not be rushed into any deals.

Released Reading striker Simon Church is the latest target on Lomas' radar, and the Millwall boss is due to hold talks with the 24-year-old this week.

Former Ipswich Town winger Lee Martin has also been linked with a move to The Den and Lomas has admitted he is hoping to seal a deal for out-of-contract Middlesbrough midfielder Nicky Bailey sooner rather than later.

He said: "I like to meet these players, sit down, have a chat and explain what we're looking for. Speaking to them face-to-face is important.

"I've had loads of meetings because you need to do due diligence on the players – you've got to go and meet them. When I was a player and moving clubs, if a manager didn't come and meet me that would be it, I wouldn't even dream of it. There has to be a connection.

"There are a lot of 'maybes' at the moment. If we can get Nicky within our budget then, definitely [I'd like to sign him]. He's an experienced Championship player. We've had a chat and hopefully we can do it."

But Millwall have missed out on Burnley striker Martin Paterson, who joined Huddersfield on a free transfer on Tuesday.

Lomas said: "They've done a good bit of business there, signing John Stead as well. I know Martin and he would have been on the list. He knows the level, is a grafter and can run the channels."

This all sounds promising but nothing confirmed. I'm certainly not getting too excited - yet!

@bleachy81: That would be a fair exchange for DNG.

Really good names being branded hungry players that need us more then we need them, wouldn't surprise me if lomas try to get lots of energy around trotter that seemed to work before the season before last . But would still like a schofield type player .....

SL is just 39 and that's really young by managerial standards but I think it will play to his advantage when chatting to players in their late 20s who need some stability in their lives. It's good that he knows the value of man management and I feel fairly confident that he'll bring in players that'll give the all important 100% effort and be skilful to boot. Let's see who bring in before we start moaning.

I can't help but feel positive about this season with lomas talking the talk! But we do need the signatures on the contracts before we all get carried away! If one good player signs hopefully the rest will follow!

@harryfabian: I disagree Harry, I would prefer Jackson if I had to pick between them but I can't see why signing Church would be negative??? Yes he is short of games but he is better than anything we have.

Has Chaplow signed for anybody yet? I would like him too regardless of his current state of fitness.

I like Lomas' man management style already. If meeting someone face to face and not via an agent gives us the edge over other teams , so be it. I'm really looking forward to next season. I think we're in good hands under SL
