STEVE LOMAS says he is working non-stop behind the scenes to bring in new players this summer – but he will not be rushed into any deals.
Released Reading striker Simon Church is the latest target on Lomas' radar, and the Millwall boss is due to hold talks with the 24-year-old this week.
Former Ipswich Town winger Lee Martin has also been linked with a move to The Den and Lomas has admitted he is hoping to seal a deal for out-of-contract Middlesbrough midfielder Nicky Bailey sooner rather than later.
He said: "I like to meet these players, sit down, have a chat and explain what we're looking for. Speaking to them face-to-face is important.
"I've had loads of meetings because you need to do due diligence on the players – you've got to go and meet them. When I was a player and moving clubs, if a manager didn't come and meet me that would be it, I wouldn't even dream of it. There has to be a connection.
"There are a lot of 'maybes' at the moment. If we can get Nicky within our budget then, definitely [I'd like to sign him]. He's an experienced Championship player. We've had a chat and hopefully we can do it."
But Millwall have missed out on Burnley striker Martin Paterson, who joined Huddersfield on a free transfer on Tuesday.
Lomas said: "They've done a good bit of business there, signing John Stead as well. I know Martin and he would have been on the list. He knows the level, is a grafter and can run the channels."
