Millwall to appoint new manager by Friday, confirms Ambler

CHIEF executive Andy Ambler says Millwall's managerial appointment will take slightly longer than anticipated – but the new man should be in place this week.

The Lions had previously stated they hoped to announce their new boss by Wednesday but, following a board meeting on Monday, that is no longer said to be realistic.

Ambler said: "The most important thing here is to ensure we get the right man for the job and timing is not of the essence at this stage.

"The fact that this is a holiday period for most people working in football has been a factor in slowing the process slightly, but we are moving in the right direction and hopefully there will be more news by the end of this week."

Former Millwall manager Dennis Wise, Crewe's Steve Davis and PSG assistant Paul Clement, who have all been backed by punters in the betting market over the past 48 hours, are not believed to be in the running.

"That Hammer s*** Lomas" !!!!!????!!!!! A part of me hopes he does get the job just to really hack off the idiots who are threatening not to renew their season tickets just because he used to play for West Ham!!!
I have no idea if he's the right man for the job, but he's highly thought of, innovative and has got St Johnstone into the Europa League twice.
Writing him off because he's an ex-Hammer is mindless, blinkered nonsense! What next, we don't want him because he's ginger!!! or Gary Johnson because he's fat, or Uwe Rosler because he's German, or Paul Clement because he's never played, or Neil Warnock because he used to manage Palace!!!
I'd say grow up, but I know there's no chance of that happening!!!

After I told my Arsenal supporting brother (who continually slags off Wenger) that the new Millwall manager will be "a surprise " cynically replied "you mean it will be a surprise they will get a manager?"

Joke aside it seems odd that it is taking so much time and must be slightly disconcerting for the team and staff. Whoever is appointed though must be given a chance and time to build a team that will progress in the league. (Hopefully)

    What a s*** circus.
If its lomas or kean then I will not be coming back down the den next season even if they're in the playoffs. I refuse to contribute to their wage especially the fcuking hamsters. I've lost all interest in this s*** now. Couldn't care less anymore.

@lukesmithmfc: yep I'm one of the childish immature ones who don't want a hammer running our club cause no matter what you think or say it will be a complete joke. Yes he's doing a good job in Perthshire and got his team in Europe again but it's early doors for him, second season as manager of a league club. I believe he needs at least another season before we can take him. Yes he could be the one and the only guarentee is that eventually we will be looking for another manager. But a hammer? It's not the done thing and the minute he has a blip it'll be too much for him. And I can't see him attracting the type of player we need at this time, I think this job maybe a little too big for him simply cause of the work needed to be done. I also believe players will sign for certain managers at our level. if we're to be taken seriously and move on then a decent name needs to be appointed otherwise expect more of the same problems KJ faced when trying to sign championship quality players. If we're to go down the young rd then I'd much prefer tim sherwood, marcus Babbel or Paul clement. I seriously think they'd have more to offer us and be given more of a genuine chance from the board and us fans. Again there's no guarentee but its my choice to come down the den or not and if I choose not to its because we have appointed someone whos on a hiding to nothing before his first day in charge.
Yes I'm an idiot, mindless and blinkered.

@lukesmithmfc: Yes you are being a little bit silly which, I hate to admit, you're usually not. Lomas is not exactly a West Ham legend and more important is what sort of job he would do. If he becomes manager, which I doubt, then I fear he'll be almost as bad as Nichol but first he has to be given a chance to show otherwise.

I'm just fed up of this merry go round mate. I know it was a silly rash thing to say but I really hope it's not him. west ham legend maybe not but when the hamsters can say on their sites millwall are to appoint one of their ex players you know it's a proper wind up and every hammer I've spoken to since are absolutely loving the thought of bonds mark 2.
If its him then I fear he won't be given much of a chance and all his managerial knowledge is up in Scotland which IMO will not help us. Who knows? Just can't believe how long it's taking. Oh well.

@lukesmithmfc: I agree with you Smithy, with any ex-hammer, Lomas or anyone else, I don't think the crowd will show the patience they showed Kenny. I personally wouldn't want Lomas as he is untested down here. With Rangers out of the picture it was always going to be a poor (relatively) team representing Scotland in Europe.

Lets face it the spl is all over the place at the minute and its anyone's guess as to who finishes second. Forget lomas but there's other names that are so unappealing and not for us, we're supposed to be moving forwards and pushing for a gegular top 10 finish (JBs words when he took over) in the championship with the hope of achieving prem dream, if all this is to be true then you need to be ambitious with who you appoint as manager. We are not in league one anymore hence some of the experienced championship ex premiereship managers being linked i'd much rather a so called name as it would mean JB and the board are backing him in the transfer market if its to be a league one or two or even Scottish then you can pretty much forget a sizeable kitty that will attract what we need.

Hi, Well some of us have to work for a living!!
First. It's Nickola because that's what my Italian wife calls me.
Second. I think that Ambler is so revelling in his spotlight that once the name is announced he'll be off to Suntan Alley in Peckham High Street to keep his aura alight.
Third. I think these Ambler statements are a total crock of s**** I really do. Whay exactly does it mean ? Babbel ? Lomas ? 'I don't know but the owner does but he won't tell me' ? I really can't imagine a man of Berylson's standing jetting off to interview people, controlling the board and then p****** off to the USA to let Ambler hold the press conference to make the announcement. I wouldn't let Ambler make the 5.23 departure announcement from platform 3 let alone anything else.
And what, Aldo, does the statement 'Wise, Davis or Clement believed to be no longer in the running' mean ? Either you've got contacts with good info. or you haven't. And if that comes from boardroom level then you could find out who EXACTLY is on the shortlist. Otherwise, anyone on here can set up a site and spout about so and so to get the readership.
I'm not interested in hearing anything more about Easter, Jackett or where Marquis is spending his holiday. What I am interested in is our future manager.

Could the delay be down to the fact that PSG are due to make a decision 'by the end of the week' over the future of Ancelotti who wants to go to Real Madrid? Paul Clement could be dragging his heals until the future of his boss is sorted and he's free to join us? Can't understand those people who are fed up with all the speculation - I make it the most interesting close-season we've had in years!!!

@lukesmithmfc: I personally wouldn't want to see anyone who's trying to restart their career; Wise, Kean, Keane, Wilson; or anyone who is unproven at a serious level; Bircham or Lomas; Clement, Babbel, Rosler and Johnson for varying reasons would be credible appointments IMO. It's obvious from the comments on here over the past few weeks we all have our favourites and those we don't want anywhere near our club, I'm looking forward to the variety of responses on here when the appointment is made!

If its not to be to my liking I will definately say so but I just hope its not the names you've mentioned including rosler and Johnson, names I would like are warnock mcleish mcClaren sherwood Babbel or clement as it would mean they are being backed by the board, not everyone's cuppa but that's the reason why I want one of em.im not convinced we'll know by Friday though.

One of the coaching staff told my dad it was Alex Rae a couple of weeks ago but he seems to have disappeared out of the running, wouldn't mind seeing him or Bomber back at the club in some capacity (not as the boss) to show the new manager the Millwall way.

I have met Ambler, and trust me he has only Milwalls interest at heart. He had terrible trouble with the Wembly agro, regarding the press etc. Then they get the Jackett bombshell, and dont forget when you see managers jump into a job straight away, its already a done deal. Who cares how long it takes as long as its the right decision. A football manager is a tough job, some do well at some clubs and then are s*** when they move, even the best fail at some clubs if its not right. When he is appointed l suggest we all get behind him, no matter who he is, who he played for etc. Because he is going to need our support, and not ruin him before he has had a chance to prove himself, and dont expect miracles overnight. xxx

The speculation just goes on and on. Even the bookies are completely confused as the betting seems to fluctuate wildly day to day, apart from Lomax who remaims odds on favourite. This despite him saying he was on holiday at the time of the interviews and his Chairman stating he has had no contact from us. I am inclined to think like Nickola that it is not an out of work manager but one whose Chairman is on holiday at the moment. Now think it is unlikely to be Clement and Davis is supposedly not in the running. Still going for an "R" Rae, Robinson or Rosler but all will be reveled in 2 days time unless there is yet another delay!!.

If it is Lomas, then I'm surprised the news of his appointment has not been leaked onto a forum somewhere - especially as we are due an announcement in a couple of days time . Surely someone at St Johnstone would have blabbed by now? Which makes it likely that the lucky, lucky chap who will manage us is currently out of a job, thus under the radar - i.e. Babbel.
And I think Miss Marple would concur.

I'm pretty sure whoever comes in will be leaving a club to come to us. Which is a shame, when you think of the high profile unemployed managers already out there.. Which also makes me think that our budget is a stumbling block for such applicants already.

Unemployed or not, holiday or not there's still compensation and other clauses to be sorted as most managers are on rolling contracts which means who ever employs them have to cough up. Maybe they've got their man and are waiting for the contract to end so we dont have to pay anything. Or it could be that we're negotiating on any backroom staff. Who knows? Maybe, maybe, maybe, that's all we've got. One of us is spot on but which one is it?

      @lukesmithmfc:
Luke , if the intending manager is seeing down he last stages of his contract for us to announce how much are we talking couple of grand do it now

As for assistants etc that's normally concluded after manager goes I would suspect that said assistant managers would be on same length of contract as manager

Also with the news that Martinez is expected to be new Everton boss Wigan will be ibterviewing soon so we don't wanna be left without anyone !!

And every day goes past means we miss out on potential player targets I don't buy into all this "no deals are done as players on holiday s***"

Get it announced been long enough
