Exclusive: Front-runner Babbel pulls out of Millwall interview

MARKUS Babbel has bowed out of the race to be Millwall's next manager.

The German applied for the post just days after Kenny Jackett resigned and was shortlisted by the Lions board last week.

Some reports had claimed he was a shoe-in to get the job and that his appointment at The Den was a mere formality.

But a source close to the 40-year-old has revealed that the former Bayern Munich star had to cancel his interview with the board because he was on holiday with his family in Hungary.

And despite being sacked by TSG 1899 Hoffenheim last December, Babbel is still under contract with the Bundesliga side – so a deal to take him to South London would have been legally complex, and potentially expensive.

Millwall are now eager to make a swift appointment, having taken a patient approach in recent weeks, and so have decided against pursuing their interest in Babbel.

The source added: "Markus had an opportunity to meet with Millwall last weekend but, because he was away with his family, this was not possible. Whether they will call him again, I don't know. It was a shame the timings did not work out."

Babbel, who has also been shortlisted for the vacant position at FC Koln, in the German second division, declined to comment on his future when contacted on Wednesday evening.

But he admitted last week that his "battery is charged" again following six months out of work and his interest in the SE16 hotseat was believed to have been genuine.

The Lions have narrowed down a pool of six candidates to a final shortlist of two or three and are hoping to appoint a new manager by early next week.

Disappointing! I think the time is right for a completely new approach and he might have provided it. Hope we don't end up with a Jackett Lite character!

I've always thought he was a bit out of our reach. If they're saying that he's still under contract with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim he would have cost us a fortune, so this may be a blessing.

@REAL Supporter: remember beggining of the week AA said the board are willing to pay compensation for the right man, that could have been Babbel they were on about.

@lukesmithmfc: Yeah, I know what you're saying Luke but when they're on about 'paying compensation' I think it may have been for the likes of Dyche and co not the Babbles of this world. Anyway, as Les and a few others have said, if Babble applies for a job and then can't make the interview because he's decided to go on his hols would we really want him? Perhaps, again as someone else said a few weeks ago their agents just send the cvs out and see who bites.

"had to cancel his interview with the board because he was on holiday with his family in Hungary."

Markus doesn't sound like German efficiency to me if he didn't realise he would be on holiday on the date he agreed the interview. Last time I went a flight from Hungary to the UK and back could be done in less than a day so to attend an interview wouldn't have been much of a hardship.

Perhaps it was a non story in the first place and the Mail with their "exclusive" that Babbel had the job were keeping up their record of never printing an true word about Millwall

Or a game of musical chairs. All the candidates have to go to the Den every day and dance round the table to 'Let 'em come' and a chair is removed every time. Babbel insisted on a sunlounger which is why he's out now. We're now down to 4 candidates and 3 chairs so another 3 days to go

If he wanted the job he'd have taken 24 hours out of his holiday for an interview. As he didn't do that it's indicative that he wasn't that keen in the first place.
So, the shortlist has been whittled down to two or three after several weeks. I still get the impression that as a collective they don't know who they want. Berylson interviewing in Paris, the board interviewing in London hotels and Ambler, as the outsider, trying to hold it all together.
Let's hope the is going to be a total 's*** on Millwall supporters' type of announcement.

        @NICKOLA:

Whoever it is I'll reserve judgement on them until I see the direction in which I think things are heading. To be honest I don't expect anything like the "sit up and take notice" signing (that we never got anyway) but live in hope it will be someone the general consensus of supporters are happy with and will get behind. You'll never please all the people all the time until you win every game. (impossible)

Gary Johnson would have done me - steady - knows the lower leagues - might recognise a striker if he sees one so might have been another brick in the wall to towards promotion.

Babbel would have been interesting though possibly a disaster but I don't believe it was ever more than gossip.

Warnock, Mcgleish Coyle would have been OK but all very unlikely.

If I could pick I think I would have liked to gamble on a duo - Alex Rae and Steve Lomas daft as that may seem as I just think they might put some fire in the belly of the team.

All conjecture and idle chat though - we'll get what we get I just hope it's not some namby pamby tree hugging ultra PC yes man

Not bad Stan but I can't see Rae on the shortlist and Lomas hasn't been approached. They would stoke up the fire that's been sadly lacking but can't see any incumbent bringing in a number two that he hasn't worked with before.
Perhaps Julian Clary would be a better choice as he's known to take it up the dirtbox and his number two would be Ambler who seems to be taking it from the board on a regular basis.

I was all for us taking our time, but the last couple of stories make it sound like we are letting things slip through our fingers.

Managers who were interested in us will probably be even more interested in the several other managerless clubs in the division who have better squads and a bigger budget. Yet again, it seems the lack of aggression and determination to get our man could cost us - same story as with Wood, McClean, Murray and every other player we have been linked with in the past. We are not cut-throat enough in a business sense. We seem too bothered about doing things the nice way - not pursuing a manager so we don't upset the other club's chairman, honouring agreements so as not to upset players/agents at some point we have to grow a pair and step on a few toes, upset a few people and do what is best for us.

Well what a supprise that is, he can't interupt his holiday, and he is still under contract to the club that gave him the tin tack because this may cause legal problems (like KJ then) but then you go on to say that he has been short listed for FC Klon job. So would not the same legal problems arise if he accepted there offert hen.

Also the Crawley Manager has just signed a new deal (what no one at the club new about this) why dont you stop reporting this S*** as this farce is making Millwall look like a proper mugs team and none of us would welcome that, why dont the club tell us when they have interviewed the canidates rather than going into print with a wish list. which is never going to fly

They way they are performing no wonder KJ jacked in he knew what would happen this coming season and left with his reputation intacked, lets hope that there is someone on the board who has some idea of how to run a football club, because we need them to do it soon to stop this joke carrying on.

@Barnlion: As long as i can remember the club has always been run as a sideline business to whoever the chairman has been. Look at any part of the club from ticketing, membership, catering, club shop etc etc it always smacks of amateurism/lazy/back of the queue standards.
Managerial and player recruitment seems to be no different.
Ill bet Neil Harris didnt pay for his toast at Southend!

@AltheAussieLion: Al could not agree any more with you it is spot on, they dont seem to look at it as a business, and CEO how long would he last on the appentice. Just seen the St Johnson have said they have not been approached by Millwall regarding Lomas.
All we want is someone with a football brain on the board to get the right man and end this tosh day in day out and lets get on with the forth coming season (we will need all the pre-season time we can get)

Al, You've got that absolutely right. It's always been amateur night with professionalism away on the horizon.
I've bought my lottery ticket tonight and if I win the jackpot I'm going down to the Den not with a broom, but with a combine harvester, and I'm going to clear the whole lot of them out. Then, I'll pay the going rate to get top people in who know how to actually run a business.

'Front-runner Babbel pulls out of Millwall interview'
Like he was ever the front runner in the 1st place. Where's the urgency FFS !!!
I'm no expert in recruitment but surely this whole process is taking far to long.
And all this we don't want to upset 'said club' b*****, not sure if our board know this, but football isn't a sport anymore, it a business and to get anywhere, you need to ruffle a few feathers!
A.A states we're prepared to pay compensation, GREAT. Pay Burnley F.C the £1 Million fee they want for Dychie, then pay him what he wants and let's all move on with our lives!!

I really beleive that it would be better not to print non stories like this, all it does is make the club look pathetic and insult the intelligence of the people that read and contribute to this site. The source said "The timings did not work out" It was a job interview ffs, If Babbel changed his mind say so. Someone probably explained to him exactly which club he had applied for and he thought better of it. So back to trawling league one and two. If Beryson is going back to the US on Monday the club must know who they are about to appoint. Please put us out of our misery, so we can start to complain about who they have appointed.

You're inside looking out whereas we're all outside looking in. That gives us a different insight.
You are making Millwall and all of us look absolutely ridiculous and pathetic with this nonsense.

    Strange indeed.
Who doesn't know there on holiday?
The club have said they where in Paris for a couple interviews, was Hoffenheim one if em to see how much compensation has to be played? He clearly applied for the job so maybe he wants to see how much the club want him. Who knows maybe its all a crock of s**** and gallen is the surprise the board have promised. At least they now have another excuse to go down the cheap "millwall" route
