Millwall not considering Yeovil's Johnson for manager's job

CHAIRMAN John Berylson has hinted Millwall will not pursue out-of-contract Yeovil boss Gary Johnson because of his close relationship with their owner.

The Lions will begin interviewing candidates who are interested in succeeding Kenny Jackett on Friday, but Johnson, who lead the Glovers to promotion via the League One play-offs, is not on the shortlist.

Yeovil chairman John Fry was one of the first friends Berylson made in English football and whilst the Boston businessman refused to be drawn on which individuals will or won't be considered for the job, he said: "There are people we won't interview because of relationships that exist between clubs which we don't want to endanger.

"We've let some people go by who were interested because of that. We're working from a list of ten names and we'll work our way through them."

Out of all the names we've been linked with, I actually would have liked him. Really hope we get a manager who can push us on to a top 10 finish, even challenge for play-offs, and not someone unproven.

Loyalty in football is a thing of the past - I hope JB is not forsaking getting the right man for the job, whoever that may be, because of not wanting to upset an apple cart.

Could be JBs back-handed way of finding out if Johnson is really interested. If he is interested, Johnson will tell Fry he would like to go for the job, and Fry could then give JB the OK to interview him.

A lot of what he says is more to do with compensation we would have to pay clubs who have managers under contract!

@dan85 deptford millwall: dan agree with some of what you've said dan but curbishley, really? Don't you think he's been out far too long and wouldn't he use us as a stepping stone for bigger things? He's been every time a job comes up but no one gives him a chance, I'd hate us to be that club. He was good for Charlton but list heart in it and once you do that it's very hard to get it back.
As for pulis, now your talking Danny boy, that'll do me just fine.

What a load of old b******* - integrity where will that get us !! Certainly didn't get us chris wood or any other of our supposed targets did it carry on like this we will end up with some w***** who has been on gardening leave for so long even channel 5 wouldn't have em as a commentator.

Just read the southwark news and apologies if already been done to death on here but jackett heavily involved in the new appointment ? I understand ferguson putting his point in as he's on board of man utd now but do we really wanna listen to a ex manager or maybe the club should listen to the fans who are expected to cough up and watch the s*** we have had to this season and a quote on paper says " can use their network of contacts to help being in the calibre of loan signings that Kenny did" f*** me I am still trying to forget the last few signings he made

This is getting right on my tits now I know we are only the p***** who turn up week in week out but the noises coming out the club are all wrong and hardly inspiring

Admirable to have it but do agents and other clubs act with "integrity" no - so do we as a club get left behind cause we wanna do the "right thing" ??

Does this mean teams like Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea and QPR because we've loaned players from them ? Perhaps the asistant managers or trainers have applied from that lot. ??????????????

This whole saga sounds like smoke and mirrors to me. I hope I'm wrong but this smells like typical millwall to me? All these half decent managers about and we'll end up with the cheapest option. An out of work for years nobody else wants cheap option.
They should have put their cards on the table and gone after someone pronto, other clubs are lining up their new signings already!!!

Well I thought that Mr Berylson was a top business man and as anyone knows you dont have friends in business and he does not want to upset the Chairman of a small club in the west country, so how would he get on dealing with any of the bigger more expansive chairman in this league or if the fooball gods ever smile on us in the premiership.

If he this GJ is his man then go for him and if he does not them so be it but why even mention it at this stage in the proceedings, it makes the club look like proper mugs, lets be honest here we all know no matter who they say they want to interview, it will come down to money, what the mager wants as a salary and what he will get to spend on the team and his own backroom staff.

So it does not matter how much we all pour out on this site that Alex used to own JB will get the best value manager he can for the money on offer, and that will depend on who ever really wants this job either as a stepping stone or because they believe in what they can do for the club, so lets see what next week brings ( I cant wait and this site will be buzzing).

I think that this is a sensible approach. If someone is prepared to jump ship from their current employer at the first chance of a better job then they will do the same to us. JB is looking for the right character, not a mercenary career hopper, somebody who will grow with the club. People seem to be criticising the Board, JB and AA in particular, at every turn, when in reality none of us have much of a clue what is going on behind the scenes. Whomever they appoint it will be met with levels of approval and disapproval from fans in different camps and everything still remains speculation at this point.

@lion.ie: I have criticised the board cause of what is coming out of the club yes none of us know who the manager or short list will be but in terms of what has come out I would rather they said f*** all to be honest

I have said and someone just agreed football is a cut throat business and we have been f***** over on many a occasion so why should we adopt the walking on egg shells approach are people really blind that JB made every dollar ethically and without posing someone off ?? It smacks to me that the manager will be small fry and uninspiring - if the board wanna release spmething different I will be glad but on what's been released so far I am unimpressed - players already signing deals how long do we wanna let it run for ??

@Millwall1979: I agree lion unfortunately - 1979 I'm also sure you need the other club to allow you to approach the manager first or you be looking at a count case that cost a few hundred thousand more, also I believe we will be stuck with this squad next season so it's about getting in a manager on the short term (staying up) and then planning his own ideas, which takes time and misable football, and I hope I'm not the poor b****** underneath you.

            @lion.ie: lion for me anyway
It's not that the board are saying something it's, what they say that fcuks me off, cause its always the same things being said. Don't get me wrong lion every now and then they get it right but every board we've had fail to move on away from the past problems, they invite it and are always talking about it whenever we need a manager or a decent player or a team in the cup it's the same nonsense f*** all the s*** in the past we have a great chance now to leave it all behind get a man in with a modern mantra with new ideas with contacts and is able to attract players he wants that fits with the brand he wants, if the board wanna go young or old it's fine with me just as long as the show they're prepared to let go of all this typical old fashioned wall s**** cause its forever holding us back. They can't keep blaming the fans all the time if they keep feeding us reg burrs b*****
Every yr. I know I refer to reg burr an awful lot but he was my first millwall chairman that I really remember and the talk us the same now as it was then. sorry if its a wee bit repetitive.

Looking at other Millwall boards it looks as though McClaren is strongly linked to the post. Just tried to place a bet this morning and they have stopped taking bets on him getting the job. ?????????????? Who knows...I'm tired of waiting around and i just know we are all going to be disappointed with a sense of anti climax. Whoever gets it, McClaren, Johnson, Bircham whoever we should trust the board and give them the benefit of the doubt as we did when Jackett took over.....

Given Johnson is now out of the picture, this would be a likely shortlist of ten:

    Uwe Rosler
    Steve McClaren
    Alex McLeish
    Karl Robinson
    Gary Waddock
    Markus Babel
    Alex Rae
    Mark Bircham
    Richard Shaw
    Dennis Wise
    Alan Curbishley

Out of that lot, none of which particularly set me on fire (but then we are Millwall not Chelsea) I fancy Rosler. I do not think Dyche is interested and Warnock has retired from management.

    Same s*** different smell
Is it a given that whenever owners or board members speak about our club it's always the same s***. We're millwall we're unique and up against it, don't want any big name Charlie's as they'll use us as a stepping stone. What a crock of old s***. If they want to continue the work KJ has done the last six yrs then they should drop their b***** and kiss and make up cause KJ is the only man that can continue his work. All this old school rubbish is getting boring and they wonder why only 8000 are turning up to watch the highest standard of football we've played since relegation out of the old div 1, and before anyone jumps on me about us being in the champship previously, I know we have but the parachute payments are huge and other clubs have owners who want to see there club in the prem so will spend what ever it takes and their fans are absolutely loving it, its not an even playing field anymore. We ain't gonna change one bit we've heard all these speaches coming out of the den a hundred times before this lot and no doubt we'll hear them a hundred times after they're gone.
I don't think we'll get the name we should get it'll end up being someone like hessenthaler for all we know. I like the integrity their showing but come on it took ten yrs for one of our players to stay down after being kicked to the floor with 2 mins to go when 1-0 up FFS, every club in the country tell their players to do it so they can see the game out but no, not good old honest wall. Don't worry we'll get there in the end. Surely if the club want to push on they need to bite the bullet NOW. Come on you have an opportunity to finnaly change the direction of the club once and for all otherwise you'll be putting us straight back down to league one and you'll end up selling us on to fairview new homes, cause that's all it'll be worth not even barretts would wanna know.
    Same s*** different smell.
Oh, if I'm wrong and you finally bite the bullet
Please burn reg burrs operations Manuel cause its out dated and no longer required.

Calm down guys, we've got to remember we were in exactly the same position as Yeovil 3 years ago. How would we have liked it if a bigger club in the same league came and took KJ just after he got us promoted? I think what Berylson has done is admirable and if Johnson does want to work here, then he'll push the deal through himself.

Aidy Boothroyd has gone from 66s to 12s in one day with Chandlers and his odds have halved with Skybet, that would be my first indication that he is definitely one of the ten names. Remember all those weeks ago when the KJ out brigade were in full swing and I said be careful what you wish for? Hoof.....

Odds keep changing, new names replacing old ones, names from nowhere appearing etc. What a crock from the journalists. They have no more idea than we do.
Here's my top three and if they have applied then I'd be interviewing them-
    Pulis
    Dyche
    McClaren
If we believe what's been said, then they haven't approached anyone that hasn't applied who is still under contract. Apparently, people are still applying. Hope that's Pulis. I really do.

Evening standard claim we are still receiving applications, the short list will be finalised by the end of the week and no decision will be made until next month although the club understands that the new manager will need time to sort out next season.

Luke, That's reasonable if we're down to 10 applications.
Someone is arranging our pre-season fixtures. Latest is vs Brentford. There goes my hopes of a North American vacation. B*******.

@benzo: yeah - has anyone mentioned Paul Robinson - long term injured, centre back, very cheap, player manager. It's not like we don't have form is it?
      Rhino/ macca/ Tuttle etc

Don't think GJ wants to leave anyway; I read something today where he was saying he's looking forward to talking to the board about next season.

Can't blame him. He's already got a better squad than we have.

As I'm getting really p***** off with all this fannying around I feel the need to get a few things of my chest.
Commercial- Why are Millwall only offering 4 months interest free season ticket purchases ? The season is double that. What's wrong with 8 monthly payments with free interest? And what's wrong with having a monthly draw for 3 tickets to be paid up in full by them? That's a maximum of 24 season tickets per year and some of those would have had payments against them.
Can't we get ex-players to make phone calls to those that haven't renewed yet? I'd personally be more likely to renew if Hurlock phoned me for example rather than some white collar worker from the office, or getting an e-mail or letter. Maybe they could have a week or two where they invite ex-players into the office to do that, give them a director's box ticket for the season, with half price for their families and a slap up meal in the restaurant.
Man City, Utd, Stoke and clubs in that surrounding area utilise their conference facilities by advertising its availability and companies from A-Z have taken them up on that on a weekly/Monthly basis to host seminars, Estate agency investments etc.
Totton AFC from the Evo Stick League even have a supporters affiliation programme on their website which offers discounts at local supermarkets etc. and I'm not talking about the odd thing we see on Millwall for discounted holidays. I'm talking about genuine discounts for day to day needs. Their average attandence is in the hundreds. Why can't we do that??
All of these, and there are hundreds more, could generate the much needed cash into the Millwall coffers. Our average attendence historically and especially last season was a joke. We need to generate extra cash.
I wrote to Peter Garston some time ago regarding all of this and asked him to refer it to the commercial department without the courtesy of a reply. I'm not employed in the commercial business but I do believe that these notions and many, many others could be utilised. How does the commercial department justify its existence if it can't bring in any money?
Berylson, you don't just need a major overhaul with the playing management but also from top to bottom at OUR club. From the tea lady up cos I've had it up to here with being little old Millwall. Time for a change and that time is NOW.

@NICKOLA: well said- other clubs do it our so called commercial department ain't got a clue we should be trying to squeeze all we can out of the facilities down there , food is still overpriced for what you get down there the beer ain't the best we should be attracting the people who go drinking in new cross, London bridge etc into a bigger Harry's bar not just saying cater for the p*** heads etc but if people are gonna have a beer before the game ain't it better on clubs coffers than all bar ones , spoons etc

Only one suggestion but sp much more could be done to if it brings in a extra 20 grand match days that's towards a player or something off the running debt of the club ?

@NICKOLA: When I came over for the Wembley game I stayed in Blackheath. On the Sunday I walked down the hill to Lewisham High Street (still as sh*te as I lovingly remember) to get a Millwall kit for my little lad. Not a kit in sight. Why don't we have a club shop there or even a stall at weekends? The good news is I got the kit online and added my six year old to our ranks. Poor lad, years of pain and misery ahead......lol

        Lion,
Yep, wonderful Lewisham High Street. Lewisham is a Millwall catchment area so like you I have absolutely no idea, whatsoever, why we don't have an official outlet there given that it's a big draw for shoppers. Not just selling merchandise but also season tickets.
Given Berylson's background I would have thought that a bit of American marketing would have seeped into the commercial department. I know S.E.London and Kent is no Florida but its worth a try surely. Millwall do face a national image issue but we'd be in our own backyard here. On the plus side they are very active in the community and have won awards for that. I don't think our commercial department is in the same league and I really think the whole of the commercial department needs a major kick up the a***.

Here's a name from left field, Steve Constantine. Former Millwall coach, managed abroad and smaller international sides, no English experience except for being our coach previously. May have a good foreign scouting network.

@the ref: he's probably the most qualified coach Britain has and I absolutely love his ethics but unfortunately we'd slaughter him on a bad day. I'd bet my house he's applied for the job though as he's another who's contract is ending this summer. His knowledge of the game is second to none. Maybe the timing is wrong now though as he'd do wonders to restructure a club in league one.
Highly unlikely but good name ref.

Think we can knock Alex Rae off the top ten list, he's in Hong Kong on a jolly judging by his Twatter page.
