Exclusive: Former Scotland boss McLeish wants Millwall job

FORMER Scotland boss Alex McLeish is in contention to succeed Kenny Jackett at Millwall after applying for the vacant manager's job, NewsAtDen understands.

McLeish has told the Lions he is ready to return to management after leaving Nottingham Forest in February and is hoping to be called for an interview by the board next week.

The 54-year-old, who can list Motherwell, Hibernian, Rangers, Birmingham City and Aston Villa amongst his former employers, certainly has the experience to qualify him for the hotseat at The Den – but he would want a big budget to work with.

The Glaswegian has clocked up nearly 800 games as manager with a win percentage of 46%. He parted company with Forest just 40 days into the job after what he described as "a difference of understanding of development strategy" with their new owners.

Meanwhile, it is understood Millwall have had several surprise applications from abroad and could even stage a round of interviews in Europe to cater for the global interest in the post.

The Lions' directors are still in the process of drawing up their shortlist and hope to have agreed upon a pool of candidates to speak to by next Monday.

They will be keeping a close eye on the League One and League Two play-off finals over the weekend, with Yeovil's Gary Johnson, Brentford's Uwe Rosler, Bradford's Phil Parkinson and Northampton's Aidy Bothroyd all likely to be in the running.

NEWS AT DEN - ''Surprise applications from abroad and could even stage a round of interviews in Europe to cater for the global interest in the post''.
Blimey, they do realise this our Millwall they're talking about? That little club in SE16?
As for McLeish, perhaps this news is a bit previous because he should really have kept his interest with us between himself and the club, unless he feels by saying this gives him a head start over the others. If he does get the job, lets hope he don't walk out after a month or so as he did wih Forest.

Yep, but this is the Championship. One step away from the promised land so can see why it might attract interest.
Why would they go to Europe to interview? Probably because they're sure that any interviewee wouldn't be able to find us tucked away in a little corner of SE London!
This is great stuff, whether it's true or not. The build up is interesting and exciting and it's something to look forward to. Lots of specualtion, lots of hopes and dreams. We'll find out soon enough who the new manager will be and once announced, there's nothing any of us can do to change that decision so lets enjoy the ride.

@NICKOLA: Have the Board not heard of Skype? We don't have the budget for travelling throughout Europe! On a related matter, I think the budget (or lack of it) will be a deciding factor as to who is appointed. As I've said before, if the budget had been there, perhaps KJ would have stayed.

Max, There's always money for a jolly!
I can't see them jetting off myself. On a hiding to nothing with the feedback. Either way, I've personally never been interviewed for a job in my own living room as oddly enough, I was expected to go to the place of my employment for that.
I do think that there is a fair bit of money for the budget because the board will have to show some cash on the table to attract the right person and I don't think Jackett quit because of the budget. He had the money, just didn't spend it correctly.

@NICKOLA: Yeah, agree Nick but as I said them coming from europe and us being Millwall not too sure if they know what we're all about, if you know what I mean? What with the Shittu signing and now this the future certainly seem brighter now and I'll repeat your statement, ''this is interesting and exciting and something to look forward to''.

Not bad and I wrote in a previous post on here that as we couldn't have Alex Ferguson maybe we should have Alex McLeish, come on, what's an Alex between friends? Seriously though, I think he'd do a good job for us.

@Sealion: his a good manager and his not stupid, but that was his whole downfall at Birmingham, it will be a test of patients for us Millwall fans as he likes to defend for large periods of the game, but he does have a hand in the pie in the footballing world that would benefit us... Might see Keith fahey from Birmingham join if his given the job, technically gifted player !

It is so difficult not to be sceptical about the above statement. For a start Global means world wide not just europe. Sound like an excuse for the board to have a jolly to Paris to interview Michael Mouse, Donald Duck and friends. Maybe who ever it is, their English is so poor, they have confused Millwall with Manchester, they both begin with an M. As for McLeish, big name, is he right for Wall, not too sure. He fell out at Nottingham over where the club was going, he would want to make a few good signings, have we got that kind of money, who knows. Maybe now is the time for the club to decide where it wants to be in a year or two.

I'm pretty sure he'll know that the budget will be smallest he's had to work with. For him to say he wants the job he obviously thinks its time to settle down a bit as this job will be like no other. He certainly has the chuddies for it, leaving the Brum for villa was a brave move.
As for Forrest that don't bother me in the slightest. Interest from abroad can open the door for a different scouting network. Would be interesting to see WHO has applied.
Think we got to get a move on now though as it looks like Brighton will be looking for a new manager next week.

Things are slowly looking up with Dany signing an extension but I do think the club are doing the right thing as long as we have a manager in by 3rd July for pre season we can build from there

Yes please MR Mcleish. Experience, big heart, rough, tough, expects the same from his players, would love the Millwall faithful. Has a huge pair of Nads to go from Brum to Villa. I think this would be good and I think he would have no illusions as to our budget and our spending allowances. Has contacts too. Also WANTS the job. That'll do me for a start. He'll demand they put in a good shift, he'll LOVE Jimmy!

He's suggesting (seems to me) an element of fantasy here in the suggestion that a high profile manager who would demand big funding would come to Millwall. Kenny Jackett didn't get big funding so why would McLeish, unless our dour accountant led organisation has a huge change of heart.

Perhaps you could cold see that if you looked down from your high horse

I gurantee that the interest in our managerial position is down to the fact that we stuck with KJ for six years even during the tough times. Many managers will look at us with envious eyes.

@glyngo: That, Glyngo, is possibly the most well aimed and meaningful comment to be said since a bloke called Harry the Dog said 'fancy a fight?' Everyone thinks of your Wolves' vacancies and now maybe your Brightons amongst others, bigger fish, but we've been seriously stable and steady. Our board and chairman has shown they're not knee-jerk merchants. In the cut-throat world a-la Man-City and the like, there is a lot to be said for that small club tucked away in SE16, that doesn't hire and fire every season on a whim.

Seconded lion.ie. The 4-4-f***ing-2 brigade would be begging for Jackett to come back after one game under McLeish. Ta, but no ta.

Glyngo: might not please the conspiracy theorists on the forums, but the board deserve huge credit for supporting Jackett throughout those 6 years. They have given him a free hand to run the football side of things, which is quite rare in the Championship. We should reap the benefits of that stability in the quality of candidates for Jackett's replacement.

Why on Earth would anyone want Alex Mcleish as Manager? His record speaks for itself, poor didn't last 10 minutes at Forest and spent a few quid as soon as Billy Davis came in, the team start winning, what does that say about him. if she signed for Millwall he could be at West Ham 6 months later if they would have him, the man has no commitment and no talent. i for one would hate to have him here. Uwe Rosler for me.

Sorry boys and girls but his record is good considering we're his been and what his had to deal with, might be different if he was backed by a proper chairman and not a dodgy Chinese hairdresser or a false backed Arub at forest, as for villa he did a perfect job of being a scapegoat and getting rid of the wage bill but still being in the top flight, and pocketing about 4 million in the process.

AM not for me, win ratio not good enough in English football. A foreign manager works well for the big boys in PL so why not with 'Wall? We could end up being the new Watford with a chunk of our team being made up of good youngsters from a Serie A team for example.
Still want Fergie's boy though as my 1st choice.

I'd love to see mcleish's win stats stacked up here against some of the other managers that some think are better. I think mcleish would be great for us for the reasons I posted earlier. Others don't agree, their choice, that's up to them. But to start quoting stats and ratio's is unfair unless you quote all the candidates stats and win ratio's and compare them fairly. I wouldn't mind betting that mcleish's aint too bad next to the others. He's also high profile with, I bet, some serious contact in the game, at all levels.

Wife - where do you fancy
        Husband - what about here
        W - no don't like that place
H - what about this place
        W - no definately not
        H - this place then
W - no way your having a laugh
H - well where do you fancy then
        W - I don't know
No matter who gets it REAL not everyone will be happy, just as long as we give him a chance

Yeah Luke I get that as well.
Last year she bought me two ties. On the day of a friends wedding I put one on. She asked me what was wrong with the other one.

The speculation goes on as a new name enters the frame each day. I think he will lose interest when he finds out the salary for the job and the players' budget on offer.Tthe actual Manager could well be someone none of us have considered so lets wait and see. No doubt a few more names will come up in the next couple of weeks.

I would imagine any manager's agent would have found out what the salary on offer is. Next couple of weeks ? Christ I certainly hope not.

I don't think he'll lose interest as he'll be more than aware of the size of the budget and salery on offer. These guys aren't daft and know s*** loads more than any of us on these sites.

Just seen an article/interview in the News Shopper from Ambler. Interesting read, and he's talking about another 10 days at least.

    Alex McLeish facts
Birmingham spent over 26 million got them relegated moved to their hated rivals Aston Villa.
Aston Villa spent nearly 20 million sacked 2 points above relegation zone.
Nottingham Forest wasn't allowed to spend any money so he quits after 40 days.
Millwall have no money so he might last a week. The above are facts, all that i have read tell me he plays boring football. We are not a Cardiff or a Forest with cash to spend but what we do have is stability , no debt and a chairman that gives the manager time and some sort of fund to play with. That should be enough to lure a good manager with good credentials not the promise of 10 million in the kitty

@Randy Lion: he also got Birmingham promoted to the perm finishing 2nd collecting 60 million finished 9th Birmingham highest league position, under a year of a shady owner who is in Hong Kong at count! on charge for money laundering, he then suffered bad injurys in defence which didn't help and was unfortunately relegated ( Scott dann ) comes to mind, but won the carling cup beating arsenal, with every Birmingham fan saying they would not have it any other way, an took them into Europe, he then quit then join villa in we're he was employed as a scapegoat to get Rid of the crap over payed player at villa will picking up a couple I million on the way to be the bad guy he only joined villa because Birmingham fan gave him a hard time, as for forest they are a badly run team, with false cash behide them that will not last for ever, you have only put negative facts ? With half the story ?

@lion.ie: when was the last time Millwall had a international top flight manager ? He likes to be hard to beat, well organised, and takes no s***, I do recall the chairman at a interview on sky news I believe keep referring to his "premier league friends" is he one ?

I agree with what your saying. It has been 54 years since I went to my first game at the Den. We have been a club with limited vision , perpetuating self made myths. The appointment of a new manager is really not the issue. It is really about addressing the organisational culture of the club. The mantra of we are a tough little club with few resources who put up a brave show against the odds simply doesn't cut it.

Changes need to be made at all levels of the club. Before anyone says go off and support another club let me say that Millwall is the only club I could ever support. We need to do more than survive but plan now for future success.

NO NO NO , MCLEISH , this would be a bad move by us , we need to go forward not back , his ideas are old hat , failed at forest . we need a young fresh face to bring new ideas to the table , its the way forward .

@lukesmithmfc: alex rae would be my first choice , he has done his number 2 slot for long enough , and he would show the midfield how to score , and he is true millwall , plus he has done quite a bit of scouting for mk in the past , and they have had some decent attackers in the past , he must have a lot to past on , he has worked for some good managers .

Just because he has made it public that he has applied for the position doesn't mean that he will get on the short list. In fact this could count against him because the Millwall Board might think that he is trying to gain an advantage over the other applicants, who are? we don't know. As for interest from abroad, remember ther are hundreds of foreign players who retired and returned home after playing in the English Leagues during the last few years.

I think these journalists go out on the p*** at lunchtime and concoct all sorts of names.
We'll be hearing about Alan Shearer next.

    Keeping it foreign skybet have
    Markus Babbel @ 20/1
Assistant at Stuttgart for 1 season
    Manager for season and half
Finished 3rd - 5 points off the top in first season qualifying for champs league
Second season got sacked after sending club into knock out stage of CL.
Took over second division side HERTA BSC
and got them promoted at first attempt then after half a season got the sack after reports of him saying he wanted to leave at end of season.
His last job was at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim
Took over in feb kept them up but halfway through the following season got sacked with club in 16th place.
Not very long at either club but has a CL qualification and promotion under his belt
Mixed with some bad results at the same time
maybe looking at us as a way in, if ofcourse he's applied.

Who ever it is they better get the dead wood out , and move for a couple of good strikers attacking MF and players that can hold the ball and not panic , that's the whole squad gone. So whoever it is there gona have to be good.
