Exclusive: Millwall captain Shittu set to sign new contract

MILLWALL captain Danny Shittu is set to put pen-to-paper on a new contract with the club, NewsAtDen understands.

The Lions have been in negotiations with Shittu since March but talks are set to finally be concluded before the weekend, with the centre-back expected to sign a two-year deal.

The news comes as a timely boost to Millwall, who this week saw influential winger Chris Taylor reject fresh terms in South London with a view to joining Blackburn Rovers instead.

In the absence of injured club skipper Paul Robinson, Shittu, 32, was a talismanic leader for the Lions last season and it had been feared the Nigerian would move on in the wake of Kenny Jackett's resignation.

But a deal to keep him at The Den is due to be sewn up within the next 48 hours, ensuring Millwall do not lose a second key player in a matter of days.

Great news - I can't believe some of the comments on here regarding Shittu, overall has been great for the club this time round, on and off the pitch and really seems to understand what Millwall is all about.
    Good on ya Danny.

      @Adsy77777:
Well let's hope Coyle don't become our new manager coz he is not a fan of DS and we could have a situation develop where the club is held to ransom. Unless we know the terms of his and the new manager's contract what's to say it could destabalise the club? Just a thought.

Could this be a sign Coyle aint coming? DS must have looked for assurances before agreeing and the next manager must have been a massive consideration..

@Adsy77777: Don't rate him massively Adsy but he's good enough at our level and you can't question his attitude. His positional sense leaves a lot to be desired at times, the first goal v Wigan being just on example. Definitely worth the contract but a bit of competition for his place would come in handy.

@AltheAussieLion: I saw Neil Warnock at Green Park tube station this morning. He was with his wife so I didn't get a chance to ask him if he was applying for the manager's job.

He hasint signed yet! I hope that he does, I hear that he is a big influential character in the squad and maybe he has been given some encouragement on the potential choice of manager and the investment in the squad etc Cos he is no mug and i don't think he would want another relegation battle at his age!!! Still skeptical and a fool hardened Millwall fan that will remain pessimistic, but it is nice to hear some good news for once.......

Very good news, and indeed, might have been given a sneak preview at the shortlist for manager and that may have convinced him to stay - who knows?
One thing though - can the 'it's what we/he/ do/does' now cease. it's starting to get a little bit Charltony.

I am truly delighted, or I want to be truly delighted, but there's a tiny part of me that can't help thinking this smells a bit 'Marc Bircham'. I hope I am wrong and I don't want to blow out everyones candles, but Birchams odds dropped to two's a few moments after this news came on here.

And another thing whilst I am still bitter and twisted, why does Danny have to build up to signing the new contract? Is it that hard? Why is he set to sign? Just sign the damn thing and show us and the club the loyalty and committment we showed him, when we saved him from the QPR boot-cleaning room at loftus road where he found himself last season. I don't mean to be negative in the face of everyones delight, but just sign the contract.

After the abuse some players rightly got last season maybe he wants to see what we all think about him before he signs. But as above you can't help but think Marc birc ham, if it is then I really am considering not getting a season ticket, I dislike him that much. I like shittu but he needs to remember that
Robbo is the Club captain and he only has the armband on loan. Giving it the big balls about nearly signing is just a load of old pr crap, I don't care who nearly signs I just want to know who has signed. And if our club meant so much then why has it taken this long.
Can't believe this silly bit of news has given me the hump. I'm not so optimistic about who the new man is now. Got a bad feeling we won't be happy.

@lukesmithmfc: I agree again Luke. It seems that all the good news that comes our way is tainted with bad. I want to be optimistic about next season, the new manager and the future of the club in general, but these last few weeks have been terrible. I suppose it does go to show just how must stability Kenny had given us and that we had got used to it! Now I feel a bit like a boat with the anchor pulled up.

I've already commented on the Danny signing, but I've just noticed Gary McAllister has just popped into the betting at 25's! Great player, but WTF......where do these names come from?
