Young Millwall striker Wilkinson agrees deal to join Bolton

MILLWALL youngster Conor Wilkinson has agreed terms with rivals Bolton after snubbing the chance to sign a professional contract at The Den.

The 19-year-old turned down multiple offers to stay with the Lions and will make the move to the Reebok Stadium this summer.

Millwall will be due a compensation fee – although that has yet to be agreed. The case could go to a tribunal if the two clubs cannot reach a settlement.

Wilkinson was offered a deal at Millwall in March but it became clear after the first round of negotiations that he had his heart set on a move elsewhere. Bolton are understood to have fluconazole offered him twice as much in wages.

Trotters boss Dougie Freedman, who has also landed Sheffield Wednesday's Hayden White, told the Bolton News: "I've been aware of them both for a while.

"They both fit in very well with what I am trying to do at this football club and I think they can both have a very bright future with the right development."

The Lions are believed to have had reservations about Wilkinson's attitude and whether he had the physical attributes to play up front, despite his undeniable technical qualities.

He was the subject of an enquiry from Portuguese giants Benfica last year.

@cos_mfc: People need to calm down, no new manager yet and can't blame the club. Biggest decision to make in years, took 3 weeks + to get Jackett. Also on the Wilkinson situation, he hasn't played a game for us so we haven't lost anything. At least we have morales to not play ridiculous money to youth players which I'm sure he will be getting.

No need to panic, Millwall will live on.

Outrageous! If we can't keep highly promising young players like him, what hope is there? I'm sure the multiple offers he rejected were derisory compared to what Bolton - who are still getting parachute payments - came up with, but surely we should have had him signed up on a longer deal 18 months ago?
Someone explain it to me, please!! With Taylor going to Blackburn, Shittu odds-on to get a better offer and now Wilkinson walking away the new manager will need to be a miracle worker!!!!

@Lonz: Lonz you would be spot on about the offers from us and from Bolton, they are still a premiership outfit with the crowds and money and it sticks in my throat to say it but a good manager aswell, we will be losing a few more before the start of a long season coming up. I also cant see anyone one who we would want at the club taking the managers job as we are in free fall now.

Who ever gets the nod will either come from the exixting back room staff or someone cheap and desperate to get back in the game at any cost, because there does not seem to have any plan in place for the events that have happened, most clubs would have been talking to people about this job, as the Board must have spoken to KJ about what his intensions were, because of our rubbish preformance in the league.

I would not be suprised if KJ was let go but done a deal to get the years money if he said that he had resigned to keep all of us on board with the directors. If this was in any other business things would have happend by now and planning for the start of a new season would be on going, it is also strange how the contract renewals that where talked about have never happened, this is another reason why I think KJ went.

One of the only exciting prospects from our youth system has gone as well. Cant blame him tbh, We should have let him go to benfica if we had no intention of playing him now all we're getting for him is some compensation from bolton.

We've lost kids before. A while ago a strapping centre forward was signed by Liverpool from us and there was also a goalkeeper who was lured away. I can't remember either of their names but I'm very sure they came to nothing. When was the last youth player to make it through the ranks ? In all fairness, most of them end up at Fisher or Welling. Another reason why our youth set up needs a major overhaul. You can't blame Wilkinson. He's made a decision in his own interests and if he's prepared to go up north with all the upheaval that creates for someone of his age to get what he wants then so be it. Millwall didn't offer what he was worth in his opinion. Who are we to argue ?

Pathetic. The most I've heard about one of our youth players for a long time and he leaves us for an average team in the same league. Maybe he would have stayed if we put more faith in him and gave him some game time instead of getting in has-been strikers and bleeding premiership youth players instead of our own. He must have been thinking "what do I have to do to get a chance?".

Our youth policy has been awful since the likes of Cahill/Robinson/Reid came through. It makes me sick when you look at the youth talent coming through in teams covering similar catchment areas. It pains me to say it, but Palace hardly had to spend anything on their squad, and look where they are. Maybe we should start looking at why these players are leaving, rather than just giving it the "f*ck him/we don't need him" attitude every time.

Trouble is that without a manager we're being picked off like carrion circling a carcass. The current squad, as is, are probably s******* bricks at the moment wondering whether they're going to be in the new manager's plans. Undoubtedly, they've told their agents to have a sniff around and see what's out there. The board appear totally inept and that's 'out there' trust me.
Shittu ? He's the next to go.

In all honesty though I reckon if he was good enough he would've been played, KJ probably felt that he wasn't ready and was perhaps waiting until pre-season to give him a run out and prove him self but everything has gone tits up and its to late now. We'll just have to wait until a new manager is appointed and hope he has a good plan to turn this club around and get up performing like we was the first half of the season and I think our youth system needs a big revamping in the way we introduce our youth players to the first team before they get snatched up by bigger clubs

Would have thought that the way our forwards were playing he was worth a shout, maybe 20 minutes or so, but did not make the bench, anyway to late now. As for bad attitude and not physical up front, sounds like Rob Hulse and we paid him 7 grand a week. Looks like the rats are leaving a sinking ship.

If I had to point out a failing in Jackett's management I would have to say it is in failing to bring youth players through to the first team. We have a good youth team coach and a decent set up, so it makes no sense at all that the best youth players can only get to play in the reserves at best. With the financial fair play rules this will have to change big time. Palace actually play their youth team players and develop them, and I think that is why we are not getting the good ones. I remember that in times past Millwall would be the preferred club for young players because they knew that if they tried hard they would be given a chance. The days of Millwall producing youth players seem to have gone and we need to rebuild our reputation for producing players like Sheringham, Reid, Cahill and Neill so that we can attract the talent again.
I got a text to say Tam had been released today. That is a massive error. I think he was never played in his best position at centre half. If Shittu fails to agree terms he should have been a shoe in for a defensive place.

If his attitude was right then he may of got a chance, if he was serious about us he would have got a chance. He's a kid who didnt sign so what. I wonder how many complain when we receive a little sum in compensation, which may well contribute to a decent experianced FIRST team player. I never new anything about the kid so I can't say too much.
The way I'm looking at it is there's more money available for the new man. Freedman probably tapped him up when he was at palace anyway.

Thinking about this from both sides of the fence, a fans perspective and a business perspective (which football is all about).

F*** him if he doesn't want to play for Millwall, sounds like a greedy t*** and his attitude stinks, which is clearly not the Millwall way!!
    or
Play him in the 1st few games of the season, if he plays well then clubs will need to offer decent money to sign him rather than letting him go for next to nothing.

I know there has been a lot of youth players who have failed recently, Amoo, Mersin to name a couple but it's all a numbers game, soon enough you are going to produce a very good player who we could end up selling for £4/5mill which will allow our small club to buy some decent championship standard players.

I just hope Fred stays now and plays as he looks a stronger, fitter, better player than Wilko (spit) anyway!

Can't help thinking had we of given him a chance in the first team we might of benefited slightly more from his time with us, and maybe gave him more of a reason to stay.
What's the point of producing youth players if we're gonna let them f/ck off before they've even had a first team game. It's not like we've got a massively talented group of strikers up front for him to compete with.
    Good luck to ya mate.

In the situation we were in how on earth could we have given any of the kids a game or two ?
The plan was more likely to secure safety with a couple games to go then throw him in without the pressure of staying up and the tension from the crowd. Most clubs introduce their young players to first team football at the end of the season with nothing to play for. If we had done it and the results had stayed the same or he was played out wide and got injured we'd have crucified the management, if he was s*** we'd have jumped on his back like we do whenever any of our players have a bad game. I really think he would have got a game if we secured safety earlier. KJ going probably made his mind up. Also, we're a champship club, so haven't the luxury of bringing inexperienced players in when we're fighting for survival, if in league one then you perhaps have no choice. Can't see what the fuss is about to be honest and if he was screaming for game time then he also would have gone out on loan. I'm more concerned about who we get in rather than who goes. We all knew there'd be a couple following KJ out the door it's normal, we also know the man can do with a couple quid to improve what he has, so we now have extra wages from Taylor, tam, racon. Compensation from KJ and now compensation from wilkinson.
Some of you will be right and some obviously will be wrong. Time will tell. For now I remain optimistic.

@lukesmithmfc: Agree with you, but my point was that KJ took a chance on the likes of Saville before he looked to his own youth players. I'm not saying Wilkinson would have been our Zaha, but now we'll never know because our youth policy is all wrong. Same goes for players in other positions. We spent money on Malone, then got Adam Smith in on loan and played CBs out of position to cover left back. As good as KJ was in the loan market, it must have been bad for morale when our own youngsters were being pushed down the pecking order in favour of expensive loan signings.

Without a doubt stan it was a mess from top to bottom, but it was the messiest it has been under that set up from Berylson down to KJ, they all came in at the same time and all made mistakes for the first time. A lot of good can come out of this, KJ was the current boards first manager so I can't see them allowing the crazy loans coming in and the crazy selection policy happening again, yes they have to let the manager deal with team affairs but if we have a similar pattern with the new guy then I'm sure they will step in and address the situation.

Somebody call the Samaritans. The level of doom and gloom has plunged to new depths on message boards over the last couple of weeks. We haven't got a competitive game for 3 months FFS. Ginger Taylor made 22 appearances last season among his injuries and suspensions. Those great decision makers at Blackburn have taken a gamble with him for more money than Millwall would. Wilkinson couldn't get in the side ahead of the likes of Hulse, Batt, Tyson and N'Guessen so right now isn't good enough. By the sounds of his attitude he might well go the way of Cherno Samba. If Shittu goes he goes - he is good but expensive and not getting any better at his age. The rest are under contract so either stay or go for a fair price. No doubt one of the manager interview questions will be about players that might be targets so hopefully the new man will hit the ground running. The board made a good decision with KJ so I don't know why so many people doubt they will make a good appointment next time. We might still get relegated given our circumstances but let's rate our chances in a couple more months! The future's bright . . . and Orange.
