Report: Millwall 1-2 Blackburn Rovers

JORDAN Rhodes struck a hugely controversial winner at The Den to drag Millwall into the relegation mire with three games of the season remaining.

The Lions had taken an early lead through Karleigh Osborne but Rovers levelled when David Jones' corner deflected in off Rob Hulse shortly after the restart.

And the visitors were awarded a penalty when centre-back Grant Hanley took a blatant dive in the area and Rhodes converted from 12 yards.

Captain Danny Shittu was shown a second yellow card after the final whistle following his furious protestations to referee Gavin Ward to compound a miserable evening.

Boss Kenny Jackett made four changes to the side that lost 3-0 at Huddersfield Town last Saturday, handing starts to Jermaine Easter, Rob Hulse, Liam Feeney and Alan Dunne.

Shaun Batt, Andy Keogh and Marty Woolford all dropped to the bench, while full-back Adam Smith was missing through illness. Scott Malone made a rare appearance on the bench.

The visitors created a half-chance within the first 90 seconds of the match when David Dunn's free-kick was flicked on by Rhodes to Colin Kazim-Richards, but his overhead kick was blocked.

Jack Smith saw his goal-bound shot deflected narrowly wide in the 11th minute after a scramble in the area as Millwall began to find their rhythm.

But after a spell of pressure, the Lions took the lead when Henry's set-piece was nodded down by Mark Beevers and Osborne hooked the bouncing ball into the far corner on the half-volley.

Henry nearly caught out goalkeeper Grzegorz Sandomierski with an ambitious free-kick from all of 40 yards but the former Poland international tipped the ball over his bar at the last moment.

Sandomierski had to be alert again in the 20th minute when Jermaine Easter's picked out the run of Feeney with a raking cross-field pass, but a deflection took most of the sting out of his shot.

Feeney then repaid the favour by laying on a chance for Easter, which was blocked, before Hulse's header was scrambled behind by Sandomierski for a corner.

Blackburn spurned a golden chance to equalise when Toddy Kane burst into the box after Dunn's chipped pass, but the defender's lob was caught comfortably by David Forde.

The visitors finally got out of first gear with half-time approaching and Dunn curled over in the 37th minute after a mazy run before Forde made a stunning save to keep out Jones' long-ranger.

Jones was denied again by Forde four minutes after the break but Blackburn levelled when the Wigan loanee's corner went straight in at the near post, with Hulse getting the last touch on the line.

Forde made a fine save low to his left in the 59th minute to keep out Dunn's deflected effort before substitute Josh King sliced well wide after some neat footwork on the edge of the area.

But the visitors took the lead in hugely controversial circumstances when Hanley stumbled and, to the amazement of the crowd, ref Ward awarded a spot-kick, which Rhodes tucked away.

The Lions were stunned and, in the remaining ten minutes of normal time, Shaun Batt's toe-poke straight at Sandomierski from Andy Keogh's centre was the closest they came to salvaging a point.

But deep into injury time, Sandomierski saved with his feet from Osborne before Shittu was dismissed after the game had ended, triggering a one-match suspension.

How can any manager in the world try and replace Chris Wood with rob hulse? And then when he does dreadful start him in a must win game and keep him on while being booed. I cant understand it

I think they might weigh things up and decide Jackett is more important than you, Willownix. We've been a bit unlucky with injuries and Wood didn't want to sign. That's not Jackett's fault. It's just not gone right this season. It happens.

When you keep playing defenders in midfield it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out we ain't gonna create f*** all !!! yes our forwards are pants but for f*** sake even robin van persie would struggle to score with the lack of service,kj keeps saying our crowd needs to be brought into play but no fans can be inspired by the most boring, negative and uninspiring millwall team I've seen in a long long time......

This is becoming ridiculous, if it takes player like Karleigh Osborne to score then surely KJ should realise something is seriously wrong! F*** Rob Hulse, he's absolutely s***, he'd be better off playing for a Sunday League Team. In my opinion, I think KJ should start thinking of putting Josh Wright back into the starting line-up, whenever I've watched him he looks good.

A stupid comment? Find me another manager who would replace Chris Wood with Rob Hulse and constantly play him despite the fact he has scored more goals for the opposition than he's scored for Millwall. Even before tonight how many league goals? ZERO. Same as the 10,000 who pay to watch this s***. F****** embarrassing YET AGAIN.

One comment only on this game: deflected corner and one of the worst penalty decisions I've ever seen. BBC Radio London coated the referee from start to finish and said at the end of the game that he should be up in front of the assessor as he was not fit to referee. Shittu is an idiot. We'll get the point we need. Signing off until after Saturdays results are in.

    Beyond despair.
This team, that I've rattled sabres with others on this forum is, once again, the worst team I've seen representing Millwall for decades.
Jackett totally assembled this squad, picks the teams, Plays players out of position, bought or brought in absolute s****, fannied around in the transfer market and in a blind panic brought in crap. When was the last time anyone on here heard a Millwall centre forward being booed off?
We aren't going to win another game this season.

why are people still defending jackett, he lost the plot mths ago, s*** signings, s*** excuses, players always getting played in wrong positions, enough is enough, all the s*** players like Hulse , woolford, Batt, Marquis , Easter Nguesson etc etc were all signed or bought through by JK, at what point does the blame fall to KJ???? now is the answer, if we by some miracle stay up we will defo go down next season under KJ, he has run out of ideas and is woeful in transfer market 99% of the time, same old boring excuses we need to find formula etc etc, we have lost at home to Barnsley, Sheff Wed, Wolves Blackburn and peterboro (1-5) !!!! all woeful teams, KJ should do the right thing and walk away as he cannot take us further, we have a worse squad now than the side that beat Swindon at Wembley, we deserve to go down it pains me to say!

I hate to say it and i never thought i would, but I'm starting to lean towards your way of thinking. Maybe KJ has gone as far as he can with us. We do need a major shuffle with the playing staff but I don't know if Kenny should be the man to do it.
It also looks like the palace game will be absolutely massive. We need a full house for that one.
And finally would anyone else agree that we won't see Hulse again this season?

Yet again just not good enough.

I still think we'll stay up, but a major clear-out is required in the summer. Another re-think is also required on why we seem to bring in so many sub-standard forwards. It's about time we started planning to build our own squad - without knowing we'll be flailing around desperately throughout the season for loans.

The thing I don't understand is why Kenny Jackett plays Rob Hulse and Jermaine Easter upfront together, when they have CLEARLY proven that they're the most inconsistent strikers in the league. Agree with Micky Lions, need a major clear out, need to sign someone who knows where the goal is. Also playing a defender in the centre of the midfield is beyond me, just shows the desperation of Kenny Jackett recently.

Now, without Shittu, Carter and Chaplow.
BUT we have got Osborne, Malone, Dunne, Hulse, Easter, Batt, Marquis and Tyson. Just need another 3 loans coming in to create a pub eleven team.

We have been saying for a long time that we have too many 1st division standard players in the squad, well we don't need to worry any more because we now have a team that can with luck lead us to mid table obscurity in div 1. We won't have to spend any money, we won't have to worry about promotion or poxy cup runs. We won't have to worry about whether Shittu or Taylor sign a new contract because they will be off asap.
Get my drift, it will be a totally stress free season and the team would have got what they deserved F*** ALL.
I am so p***** off I can't even find the words describe how f****** low I feel right now.

Given this club is only slightly wealthier (maybe) than Peterborough who are going down incidentally,
I reckon you should be praising the Boss & the team and stop thinking that M.F.C. belong in the prem with your school- friends clubs........,grow up & face facts.

    We deserve to go down.
A friend said months ago to Chelsea and arsenal fans that in the premiere league the manager doesn't necessarily win you games cause of the standard of player available, I agree. He also said that in the championship it's the manager who gets you promoted or relegated again, I agree. We can blame the ref all we like but tbh we didn't look like scoring the second goal we needed, it was obviously gonna go tits up for us tonight the midfield was non existent. I've sung a lot of players praises this season but to be frank with you none of em are good enough for this division. If we're to stay up then I predict an even more embarrassing season ahead. We have far too many s*** players to get rid of and nowhere near enough money to replace them all.
Forde, Henry, Taylor, Lowry, beevers and the s*** are good enough the rest unfortunately are well bellow standard, yes if you keep playing the others eventually they will have a couple good games. We are top s***.
We will lose our three remaining games no question. I was positive for a long time but the last couple weeks I've dreaded the outcome of this season. Someone said about 96 I remember all too well and in comparison we are a worse team. League one beckons.
And yes, it's jacketts fault. But berylson has a lot to answer for. Lets stop pretending. We're s***.

    Frank,
First a point tonight would not have been enough.
Peterborough and not going to get relegated.
Milwall in the Prem.? Perchance to dream but isn't that what supporting Millwall is all about?
What we want is a team that represents the real Millwall and to remove a manager who has the faith of Berylson but not the fans. I personally think he's lost the dressing room as well.
I'm assuming you went tonight. Are you really telling us that what you saw is ok and that you got your money's worth? Are they a team worthy ?

Jackett - why change the winning formula of the first half, for an awkward 451/433 that we didn't have the right players on the pitch for? Has to take the blame for that second half. We took our foot off the gas and Blackburn smelled blood. Hulse should not have come out in the second half - he clearly couldn't give a s*** that we are fighting for our lives.

Jack Smith - Jack of all trades master of f*** all. The most casual player I have seen that doesn't have the ability to back it up. His passing in the final third was sloppy and he was responsible for us losing the ball and setting Blackburn away on a counter attacks led by their fat-headed 15-stone CB who ran all of 80 yards without a challenge. I watched Smith give the ball away to him, then jog 5 yards behind him the whole length of the pitch without trying to hold him up or make a tackle. Why is he keeping Josh Wright out of the team?!

Shittu - I don't care how awful the ref was, you don't get yourself sent off after the game has f****** ended, leaving us without our captain against Forrest on Saturday when we are now fighting for survival. F****** stupid idiot.

Batt - tries his heart out, but is so naive it winds me up. Hanley had him sussed from the first 30 seconds he was on the pitch - get in front of him, wait for contact, go down. Got himself booked for a childish reaction to a s*** decision and from then on Hanley was just winding him up - and it worked.

Forde - you have been brilliant all season, but how about some f****** urgency when we are chasing the game?

Penalty - blatant dive - I've never been so angry with a decision. He was doing it all night and the ref was lapping it up. However, he did what he had to do for his team, because he knew safety was on the line - if we had a few players with the guile to do something even half clever, we would be safe tonight, not Blackburn. I'd rather stay up dishonourably than go down honourably. Everyone associated with Blackburn thinks the man is a legend and we would too if it was the other way around. Having said that, he can f*** off, the fat-headed p****.

I got shot down the last time I suggested that KJ had reached the level where he could take us no further. As everyone has said before, they are his players, his tactics, so why does he just constantly make excuses and never takes the blame. JB I do not think has the guts to sack him, or the footballing knowledge either. I do not think we will be relegated, not because of our results but by the fact that realistically, Wolves, Barnsley and Peterborough have to win both their games to be safe. One win and a draw may not be enough. If KJ plays Hulse again this season it will confirm that he has totally lost the plot. I am waiting for KJ'S excuse for this loss, no doubt the penalty decision, ignoring the fact that we were s***.

Kenny Jackett, I stuck by you after Peterborough, Wolves and Wednesday but I can't take any more of forking out cash for the cast-iron crap you're giving us. Alright, they won with a penalty awarded for falling over, but I have to say you are to blame for the WRONG signings, the WRONG line-up, the WRONG subs, half the team being played in the WRONG position.

Beevers out at left-back to make room for the out-of-his-depth Osborne. Is Scott Malone the new Jordan Stewart? Persisting with the Abdou/Jack Smith combo when even Aldo was saying that it's been a conspicuous failure and you were a cert to change it. And continuing to give starts to Rob Hulse, a man who won't jump, chase, challenge or even try to disguise the fact that he doesn't care and doesn't want to wear the shirt, is a slap in the face of every Millwall supporter. Blackburn were absymal and we could have had 4 or 5 in the first half if we'd wanted them a bit more; as soon as they equalise you pull off both strikers and add a third defensive midfielder, giving them hope when they didn't look like they had any. If Plan B is playing Shaun Batt on his own we might as well have stuck with Marquis, because he was a headless chicken. And when the game's lost you take off Feeney, one of the two creative players on the pitch, but keep on Jack Smith who Blackburn were strolling round like he wasn't there.

I don't know if we'll stay up but if we do, nothing short of ripping apart this team and building a new one will give us a chance of staying up next season. The few players with enough skill for this division, like Keogh, look psychologically destroyed from having to play in this team and I find it harder and harder to blame them.

Plenty of understandable passion on here tonight, but very little realism.
Around half the teams in the Championship have played in the Premier League within the last three years.
The parachute payment system means they started this season nearly £15 MILLION ahead of us and when you add in the fact they've all got bigger fan-bases and sponsorship deals that figure is probably closer to £20million.
Jordan Rhodes cost Blackburn £8million!!!!! Our record transfer fee is £800,000! No-one had a clue who Chris Wood was when KJ got him in on loan and, as Wood admitted recently, put together a financial
package which was better than Leicester offered him.
Unfortunately for us, he felt Leicester - who have a handful of million-pound plus players in their squad - offered him a better chance of Premier League football.
And let's be honest, he was absolutely right.
Signing proven goalscorers in January is notoriously difficult and expensive. KJ never expected Hulse to

replace Wood, but I'm sure he expected him, Easter and Tyson to score enough goals between them to see us finish in mid-table which would have been a decent achievement in this league.
There's no doubt they have massively under-achieved and coupled with injuries, suspensions and an alarming decline in form/confidence the whole thing has unravelled in spectacular fashion.
I think we'll survive - and with the FA Cup run wiping out this season's operating debt - there should be enough in the kitty for some significant summer signings, including a permanent replacement for Wood (and it WON'T be Hulse, Easter or Tyson!!!)
Life in the Championship isn't going to get any easier though! The clubs who get relegated from the Premier League will get £60MILLION over the next four years!!!
Mistakes have been made - can anyone tell me why we let Henderson go? - but sacking KJ isn't the answer and anyone who can't accept that staying in this league will be an achievement, is seriously deluded!
(PS - It's written in the stars that we'll survive by beating Palace - and Hulse will score the winner!!!)

We stuffed the Wood deal up good an proper! Ive known about him for years and probably so has many Wall supporters who follow the lower leagues. He has scored goals wherever he has been. He got Brighton promoted some years back. We should have signed him up after 3 games and before Leicester and that t*** Pearson was on the scene. He IS a proven goalscorer.
We are very slow, always at the back of the queue, naive and inexperienced in the transfer market always have been.

There's not a cat in hell's chance West Brom would have agreed to sell him to us after three games. They sent him out on loan - again - because they knew they had a million pound plus player on their hands.
He chose Leicester over us because like it or not they are a much bigger club with a realistic prospect of getting back into the Premier League.
He was superb for us, but after a flying start at Filbert Street he's hardly set the world alight up there and had a stint on the sub's bench during their dismal run which saw them slip out of the play-offs.
He would have been a great signing for us, but the way some Lions fans go on about him, you'd think he was Van Persie, Messi and Ronaldo rolled into one!!!

I will defend KJ because we all backed him when Wood was scoring and Henderson was scoring, they both saw their futures away from the Den. Afobe started to look like an astute loan signing as did Chaplow, guess what; they got injured. Trotter, when he's not injured, looks like a shadow of the player he was, as does Keogh. Taylor has been injury plagued, Lowry, suspended more times than a bride's nightie. Our best player tonight IMO was Feeney; what happened, he got injured. Tonight was awful, no question, Hulse - shocking - but still thought we should have got a point but for one of the worst penalty decisions I've seen. IMO, get to the end of the season re-group, get rid of the dead wood, get in a couple of strikers (decent ones - and we've seen a few in recent years), get a central midfielder and we will all be singing Kenny Jacket's name again. Yes, the only strikers we could get in at short notice are s***, yes, I think that KJ made a mistake going 4-5-1 but who did he have to bring on?????

Let's have it right, jackett has a smaller budget than a single mum with 2 kids. He has worked miracles for 5 years. This year has gone abit s*** and yet it's been half decent all at the same time. No excuses tonight though, wrong starting line up, wrong subs. It's unfair to comment about motivation and man management skills because NO ONE on here will have the first clue about what gets said behind closed doors I can guarentee it. Some people need to read through their previous comments and then they will see themselves that 1 minute they have praised him then the next week he's a c*** and he's got to go etc. I ask anyone to tell me honestly who would do a better job who is available and would come to us? Let's be realistic we are not attractive to the majority so we will always be punching above our weight. THAT IS REALLY "what we do". Ok we lost tonight, as long as we are safe (looking likely) then who really gives a f*** anymore seriously? We've been s*** at home for 2 years and I didn't think it would change tonight, Watford should have smashed us, forest will beat us and Henderson will score then palace will f*** us over AGAIN. Then we will go to derby and win. Same old Millwall, stressing people out since 1885

Its been a dodge season and staying up will be a success allthings considered. I believe KJ deserves another season to rebuild this squad and try to get the dead wood out. Very disappointed though, i am a KJ fan but even i admit that he hamlet this squad stagnate. He needs to get back to basics and bring in replacements for Hulse, Trotter, Wright, Tyson, Smith A, Racon, Marquis, Feeney, Woolford all of whom are either going back to their parent clubs, disengaged or not Championship std.

I think you are right Glyngo. If we stay up we need to stick with KJ although if we revert to the standards of this season it could be his last.

Not connected but my highlight tonight - in the director's box, some Blackburn supporter winding the Millwall fan's up, at the final whistle, turned to the Millwall supporters in the Excecs and started making w***** signs. It was pointed out to him that this probably wasn't the wisest move when one of the Blackburn directors got involved. When they got in the bar afterwards they were told to sling their hook, their director started giving it 'don't you know who I am' - slung out with Jeff Burnidge giving him a piece of his mind with JB looking on. Otherwise my night was s*** and I've got a rotten cold.

      Priceless.
Talking of Burnidge do you think he still has Claridge's number. Tell him to bring his boots!

It's weird you should say that Al. Steve Claridge was there tonight and said exactly the same himself - his verdict on our forwards was not complimentary!

Haha, brilliant clarridge told you he should have brought his boots.
Maybe the man who hates us for the way he was treated was there to get his old job back.
      Haha funny though

Claridge could teach our young forwards a thing or two but the older lads are meant to meant to be the finished article so God knows what we can do about them? Claridge could show them the door i guess.....

Ok, calm down everyone. You can only write about how s*** it is so many times for it to be effective. Worst Millwall team or performance ever, I don't think so. Think back to div 1 a couple of months after KJ took over when we lost 3-0 at home to Doncaster Rovers with Preston Edwards in goal and the likes of Adrian Forbes in the team. That was the worst lions performance under KJ and to his absolute credit we went from strength to strength after that. He knows how bad it is at the moment and I firmly believe is confident that we won't go down. The only way is up people, hold your nerve and with good fortune we will be safe on Saturday. Oh and player of the season I'm afraid has to be Chris Wood.

Can't really add much to all the posts to date. My only comment is to an earlier post by lukesmithmfc when he said only Forde,Shittu,Beevers ,Lowry, Henry and Taylor are Championship standard of the current squad. My concern is that if we do get relegated Shittu and Taylor won't sign new contracts anyway. Forde would probably stay because he is 33 but Beevers,Lowry and Henry are only young players with their best years ahead of them so I could see them wanting out leaving Jackett or a new Manager having to rebuild the squad from scratch. I can then see us being in League 1 for years.

For the life of me I can't understand why some of you are saying kenny deserves another season with the chance to clear out the dead wood, its his dead wood. Every single player in that squad are kj signings or players he's given new deals. We give s*** like jack smith longer deals than the likes of Lowry trotter Henry. Makes no sense at all. Henry will be off in the summer cos we'd rather sort out a new deal for the impressive batt. The bloke shouldn't be playing football and if any believes differently they know very little of football. KJ continuously sets up every single f****** game home or away to not lose. It's boring s*** to watch and frustrating. Yes against a team like Wigan maybe I can understand but let's face it they aren't exactly Man U are they. At home to teams with confidence as fragile as ours like Barnsley Peterborough wolves and now Blackburn we should be taking the game to them but no we sit back let them get footholds on the game and impose themselves. The quality of players these teams have will win games if you stand off them all game. People blame the defence lately for making mistakes I'm not surprised we can't keep the ball and they are under constant pressure and concentration will slip after a while. Some fans don't help either last night josh wright came on finally and straight away you can see the difference and we keep the ball cos we have someone in midfield showing for the ball but cos he's keeping it and playing little 1-2s you get some old nonce shouting out 'no wright what you doing, get it in the box' 60 yards from goal. Yes mate great idea lump it into to the box to batt who's s*** in the air with no help around him for the second ball. Laughable.
As you can tell I'm slightly annoyed with what's going on at my club and sooner something is done the better.
