Jackett: Millwall have to "cover themselves" in contract talks

KENNY Jackett believes Millwall must "cover themselves" financially during talks with out-of-contract duo Danny Shittu and Chris Taylor this month.

Jackett has confirmed that negotiations with Shittu and Taylor are underway but says the Lions will not enter into hasty agreements that could prove to be expensive mistakes further down the line.

"We are working away at those," he told NewsAtDen. "The nature of contracts is quite complicated these days. To some degree, contracts are incentive-based and so they need a little bit of work.

"That is the right thing for both sides. When players do well in a very expensive division, they have potential [to earn more] and the club have to cover themselves should the players not perform.

"Contracts are slightly more complicated and take longer to sort out but, in terms of the ones that are ongoing at the moment, there is no bad will or any problems."

But the Lions boss has not spoken with the other players in his squad who are due to become free agents in July – Tamika Mkanawire, Shaun Batt, Therry Racon, Steve Mildenhall and Maik Taylor.

"There are different times to discuss contracts," Jackett added. "Some of the guys out-of-contract in the summer have taken up Andy Ambler's focus and concentration at this particular time.

"But everybody in the club from next week onwards will be focusing on the end of the season. After that, we'll see where we are and if there is any business to be done.

"It's an ongoing process so I am sure there will be, in terms of existing players and new players. We need to get through this crucial period and assess things then."

KJ doesn't give any of the youngsters a go at the moment. There are a couple of prospects but KJ tends to prefer experienced loans rather than untried youngvguns

Mmmmmmmm, I get the jitters when the club and KJ say things like 'have to cover ourselves' and 'not be hasty'. Sounds sensible on one hand but smells a bit like pussyfooting about on the other hand. These 2 players have been instrumental in everything good at 'Wall of late, Kenny.....sign em up please!!!!!

See your point marsh, but I think he's throwing caution to the wind, if he says we're sorting their contracts out and it'll be done in a couple weeks, but they end up not signing, we'll muller him. I think it's a matter if him covering all angles. As you said marsh their both instrumental, which means they'll need "REWARDING", looks a no brainer, but we're millwall and we don't do things the easy way.

shittu & taylor r a must sign.. 4 the others let them all go & get afew new faces in for next season ...we should av a bit of doh for a change for the cup run...think it was worth £4.5m back in 04, so if the bank dont nick it all kj should b able 2 spend instead of having to sell all the time 🙂

KJ obviously wants the pair of them and I'm sure he'll do his upmost to get them but if he doesn't, then I doubt very much if it will be his fault.

Don't forget that agents will be reading these posts to judge how hard they can negotiate with the club, it is a mistake to commit to signing a player when negotiating. I agree that they are covering themselves, but they are also strengthening their position by leaving all options open. Good strategy IMO.
