Millwall could offer Saints loanee Chaplow permanent deal

SOUTHAMPTON loaneee Richard Chaplow is being sized up for a possible permanent move to Millwall in the summer, chief executive Andy Ambler has admitted.

Chaplow, who made his Lions debut in the 2-0 win at Charlton last weekend, has a year remaining on his current deal with the Saints but is almost certain to leave St Mary's at the end of the season.

And Ambler says Chaplow could become manager Kenny Jackett's latest try-before-you-buy signing – provided the 28-year-old impresses sufficiently in the final months of the campaign.

Ambler told NewsAtDen: "He's one for the future in the sense that, on the whole, Kenny likes to sign players on loan he thinks he has a chance of getting – especially those of a certain age.

"It's a different situation to someone like Harry Kane or maybe even Chris Wood. When Kenny signs a player like Chaplow he's thinking there might be a contract up for grabs if they show something.

"I'm sure that's what he's thinking this time. But primarily we've signed him until May 11 because he can play in the FA Cup semi-final against Wigan."

Really impressed me on Saturday. Not too sure why he came off though - match fitness, I guess? I suppose now Southampton will want to bump the price up. Shame he won't be available for our FA Cup final!

Kenny likes to sign players on loan he thinks he has a chance of getting - especially those of a certain age. So presumably, he's looking to sign Tyson, Hulse and Easter as well or possibly thinking about it?

There's no need to shout mfc. Perhaps, Tyson has gone back already? Let's face it, we wouldn't notice!

This is the chance to sell Trotter in the Summer because he obviously doesn't want to be here and has no intention of signing an extension to his contract.. With Chaplow as a ready made replacement that would give KJ the money to sign the strikers we desperately need and get replacements for the deadwood we have in the squad. Mildenhall, Mkandawire, Racon, Batt and N'Guessan. Send Tyson and Hulse back .This would trim the squad and then sign 3 or 4 quality players plus Chaplow to replace them.

Most of you are probably right on the outcome of this signing. But lets just enjoy it for what it is - a loan until the end of season.
He's jackets best signing IMO absolute quality player and he's better than we already have. Personally I think it's a ridicules article to post and an obvious one after CW. Its Very cheap and lazy journalism. All it's going to do is make people question his commitment to the team. The poor bloke has completed a full game yet. Rubbish article. IMO

Pearson will be tapping up JB for a job soon. As for cue ball, is he a winger or CM?

Pearson has been caught bugging KJs phone every time he talks to a player he gets his wallet out, so don't be supprised if someone temps him away.

I dont think we will have any thing to worry about. When Leicester carry on their slide out of the top six and failed to get promoted, Pearson will be history.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Chaplow's not interested in Signing for us, he's out of contract soon so it doesn't inspire confidence, this will be another Chris Wood turn out, hope we do get him he's a wall player proper grafter and gets stuck in.

I feel there's going to be another debate about wages after this ones over! No doubt he has put himself in the shop window, imagine if he plays a blinder against Wigan, we will have no chance IMO, hopefully I'm wrong and kj had a word before he signed. He is a quality player and has definaltely added to our starting 11 , the best centre midfielder at the club now. Would like to see him and jimmy just behind trotter so he can relax abit and get back to his best!

I wouldn't worry about Pearson. He'll soon be arm in arm with Warnock and meeting up with Appleton. They won't be leading teams out at Wembley but will be leading the front of the queue at the job centre.

Please note correction to article. Chaplow extended his contract at Southampton by a further year in the summer until 2014. This information, for some reason, was not publicised and has only just come to light. So he is not a free agent in July as previously reported.
