Blackburn boss wants fans to recreate Millwall atmosphere

MICHAEL Appleton hopes playing in front of their own supporters will give Blackburn Rovers the edge over Millwall in Wednesday's FA Cup quarter-final replay.

Appleton has called on the Ewood Park crowd to replicate the noise levels heard inside The Den on Sunday, when the sides played out a goalless draw in front of 14,885 raucous fans.

"With us being at home, the onus is on us," he said. "I think the biggest thing, which I hope will be the case on the night, is that we create the atmosphere that Millwall created down at their place.

"If the fans can turn up and make it a memorable night for everyone and cheer every corner, every free-kick, every, throw-in and every tackle then I'm sure it will give the players the edge we need."

Appleton does not believe Millwall's Championship victory at Ewood Park last November will have any bearing on Wednesday's match, although he admits he is wary of that fact.

But having accused the Lions of taking "cheap shots" at his players, Appleton is expecting another bruising encounter against Kenny Jackett's side.

"We've got to be mindful of the fact that, before I came to the club, Millwall turned us over here," he said. "We'll give them the respect they deserve but, ultimately, it will be about what we do.

"The first 20 minutes or so will probably be very similar, with both teams probably earning the right to play. Once we get that out of the way we can make sure that we compose ourselves.

"Hopefully some of the players and footballers we've got in the team can do that."
