JOSH Wright has revealed that Blackburn Rovers midfielder Danny Murphy was a big inspiration to him during the formative years of his career.

Wright was coming through the youth ranks at South London rivals Charlton in 2004 when Murphy moved to The Valley from Liverpool.

The pair will come face-to-face once again at The Den on Sunday when the Lions host Rovers in an all-Championship FA Cup quarter-final with a trip to Wembley in the last four at stake.

Murphy, 35, won the FA Cup and UEFA Cup at Anfield prior to joining the Addicks and Wright admits he benefited immensely from such prestigious company.

Wright said: "I was with Danny at Charlton when I was a young kid trying to break into the first-team squad after coming out of school.

"He was someone I'd watched a lot growing up so it was a privilege to be able to train and play with him. He'd put his arm around me, advise me and help me.

"He liked me a lot and I got on with him as well so he was a very good man to look up to, learn from and train with. He's good on the ball and a good player.

"I would always be looking at him and listening to him – the way he played the game, how cool and calm he was and his professionalism. He was fantastic on and off the pitch.

"Watching top professionals like him can always help you – there are many other I could name and he was someone that was good to look up to as a young kid."

Murphy and Wright went toe-to-toe in the middle of the park during the league encounter between the sides earlier in the season, when Millwall claimed a 2-0 away victory.

But Wright says that result will have little bearing on Sunday's tie. He said "That stage of the season was slightly different to now. Playing at home is completely different – so are the league and cup.

"We know how quick and fast this is going to be compared to a few months ago. We set up that day, we were solid, defended very well and counter-attacked.

"Sunday might be slightly different. We will have a gameplan and a structure but we have to bring a little bit of what we did at Ewood Park into this game."
