KENNY Jackett praised John Marquis after his FA Cup heroics against Aston Villa and believes the striker's performance bodes well for the future.
Marquis capped an impressive performance against the Premier League side with an 89th-minute winner to set up a fifth-round tie with Luton Town next month.
Jackett is short of options up front following the departures of Chris Wood and Darius Henderson respectively this month and he admitted Marquis staked a claim for a starting place with his display.
He said: "John showed to the supporters that we could have a good player for the future. As one player moves on, another one comes in.
"It's up to the players we have to step up to the plate when the opportunity is there. Many careers have been made like that. Young players have to recognise their opportunity and take it.
"John showed a lot of promise as a youth player and then went through a tough time with injury where he wasn't able to shake off a groin problem.
"That resulted in an operation but he came back on Friday fully fit and he looked fine. Scoring the winner will do his confidence the world of good.
"I thought he produced an excellent performance in terms of leading the line. For a young guy who hasn't played for such a long time, he was a real handful for Villa."
