MILLWALL captain Danny Shittu has been excused from international duty by Nigeria and will not be reported to FIFA for rejecting his African Cup of Nations call up.

Shittu was named in the Super Eagles' preliminary 32-man squad for the finals tournament, which is being hosted in South Africa later this month, but turned down the opportunity to take part.

Nigeria initially refused to accept his decision and threatened to make a complaint to the game's governing body if he did not report for duty, which would have triggered a domestic playing ban.

But coach Stephen Keshi said: "We have decided to focus our energy on the players going to South Africa. There's no point creating unnecessary distraction when we have capable players.

"Seeking punishment will not make any positive contribution to our preparations. There are players in the squad who can deliver, so we wish Shittu all the best in England."

Shittu, who has made 22 appearances for Millwall this season, said: "I am honoured to have been called up for the squad but I am disappointed to say that the timing for me this year is unfortunate.

"I have a lot of personal commitments which would make it hard for me to give my all to the team. Whenever I wear the Super Eagles jersey, I always give 100 percent.

He added: "My heart will always be with the Super Eagles and I wish my team mates all the best in the coming tournament."

Good to see how important Danny views his role at Wall to pass up the chance at being at a tournament with his country, nice one Dan!

Good show of loyalty from Shittu, I doubt he would have made the first team for the Super Eagles but nonetheless a great example for the others to follow.

Howdy! I know this is somewhat off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this site? I'm getting fed up of WordPress because I've had problems with hackers and I'm looking at alternatives for another platform. I would be fantastic if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.
