MILLWALL rejected an approach from Portuguese giants Benfica for youngster Conor Wilkinson last year, NewsAtDen has learned.

The two-time Champions League winners made their move "three or four months" ago, asking for permission for the 17-year-old to link up with their squad on a training camp.

But the Lions dismissed the Lisbon-based club's request out-of-hand, insisting they would have to make an offer for the striker if they wanted to pursue their interest in him further.

Wilkinson has scored six goals for Millwall http://ropewalkfenwick.com/antibiotics/ U21s this season and bagged a brace against Blackpool in the third round of the FA Youth Cup last month.

Wilkinson, who scored for the first team in a pre-season friendly against Glenavon, was an unused substitute against Preston North End on Saturday – his first time in a competitive matchday squad.

He is represented by former Millwall striker Jamie Moralee – the agent of Manchester United captain Rio Ferdinand.

Thinking it's about time we gave him a first team start. He's been doing a lot of good stuff at U21 level, and we're in need of a striker who can hit the back of the net.

When you have teams like benfica intereted in players and try to lure them away, thats a good sign that the players potential has been spotted. In my eyes he needs a first team run out but I trust KJ's judgment and im sure KJ will play him when he is ready and to be greeted by the lions in the stands.

I've seen this boy quite a few times as my son played along side him at youth level, he's is about 6 3", has a good touch and good skill, scores goals inside & outside the box and good in the air, he's cockey and has a s*** load of self belief, not supprising that bigger clubs are taking notice, defo one for the future maybe as a pair alongside Marquis!
