Hull u-turn sees Mclean join Ipswich instead of Millwall

MILLWALL have missed out on the signing of Aaron Mclean after Hull City decided to loan the striker to Ipswich Town instead at the eleventh hour.

The Lions had agreed to pay Mclean's wages and a substantial loan fee to the Tigers but Tractor Boys boss Mick McCarthy hijacked the deal on Friday morning.

It is understood Hull were wary of loaning a fringe player to a potential play-off rival, with Millwall only nine points behind the Humberside club in the Championship table.

Chief executive Andy Ambler told NewsAtDen: "We've got to respect the fact that clubs around us might think twice about loaning their players to us because of our league position.

"It makes bringing in better players more difficult but that's something we're working on."

Ipswich now have murphy, mclean and mcgoldrick on loan. They also had dj campbell on loan until a few days ago, maybe we should think about signing dj campbell on loan if qpr are willing to let him go?? Not sure about the situation with murphy but he also looked a decent player when we played them..

Actually that's a really good idea. I think D J Campbell would be a great acquisition for us, he's lively, a nuisance and always has goals in him. I wonder what his situation is? Is he available? Would he come to the Den. I think he would. Be a great foil for Hendo, Keogh etc, bit like a Harry Kane, ie a quick lively striker to compliment a big 'un.

Is there a possibility of looking further afield ? Not sure how good our scout network is but we're fishing in a very small and crowded pond at present where others have bigger fishing rods than we do. What about the French or German leagues?

DJ Cambell is an interesting prospect but there has been no indication that we are looking at him.

So when we are rubbish the reason we can't get the players is because we're rubbish. Now that we're good, the reason we can't get players is because we're too good.

Gotta love being a Millwall fan 🙂

I think the last thing millwall need is a player that was good a season or two ago. We need to look in the lower leagues or abroad to find some young fresh talent who will maybe look at our club as a go between to bigger things eg Steve morrisson......

We don't need foreign players. We've not got the scouting network to unearth anyone decent. Stick to British players. I would take a chance on some of the top players in the lower leagues and nurture them as we have done before. Realistically we aren't going to get into the playoffs this season so with almost enough points to be safe I would prefer to build a team that will be stronger next season and limit the loan players.

Buying from the lower leagues isn't going to move this club to the next level. Morrison wasn't luck it was great judgement. You wont see another one like him for a few years i reckon. John Akinde knocked us back a couple seasons ago, he was prolific down there but has now disappeared completely, Marc Laird is having a blinder for Southend but wasn't good enough for us at this level. We should be looking at premier league youth or into Sweden, Belgium or Germany. I reckon, long term we'll get benefit out of close relationships, in a Millwall - Spurs kind of way. We could then unearth some championship level talent for realistic money or get some quality loanees with a better chance of keeping them. Simples;)

Disagree re players from abroad if the network isn't there. Remember all the dross of the recent past.

So should we set up some form of network ? I'm not just talking about reaching the play-offs this year, I'm talking about the next 5 years. We're going the right way by setting up the development squad, but it could be a couple of years before we produce any first teamers. As for bad imports, I believe Kenny has an eye for a player and would only buy someone that fits in. If we don't do something radical or forward thinking we'll go through the same old cycle year on year.

Definitely need to set up a network to make it work but assume it costs money we don't have. Agree it should be a long term plan.
