JIMMY Abdou has thanked Millwall fans for their support since it emerged that his young son is battling leukaemia.

The midfielder missed the Lions' 2-1 home defeat to Barnsley earlier this month after returning to Marseille on compassionate leave to be with three-year-old Ilyas and the rest of his family.

Abdou told NewsAtDen: "He will be following his treatment for the next couple of months, but he's doing well at the moment.

"In this situation, we need all of the support we can get. I really appreciate the fact that the fans are behind me because, to be honest, I need them. I'm very grateful and I want to say thank you."

Abdou was able to return to the side to face league leaders Cardiff City on Saturday and, despite losing 1-0 in the Welsh capital, the 28-year-old insisted there were positives to take from the game.

"I felt a bit tired towards the end, but I was ready for that and I feel fine," he said. "The whole team worked really hard. We knew coming to Cardiff would be very difficult because they are at the top.

"I thought we did well – we were unlucky that they scored so early, but we responded well. We started slowly in the first ten minutes but we came back and had a lot of chances.

"We know we can score but the goal didn't come for us – hopefully that will change against Bristol City on Tuesday and we're looking forward to that game already."
