Exclusive: Royals striker tops Millwall's list to replace Wood

MILLWALL will turn their attention to Reading striker Simon Church after their bid to sign Chris Wood fell through, NewsAtDen can reveal.

The Lions registered their interest in the Wales international over three weeks ago and boss Kenny Jackett is planning to open formal talks with the Royals in the coming days.

Church, who is currently on loan at Huddersfield Town, is set to be sold by the Premier League side for around £400,000 in January and Jackett has already asked to be kept informed of developments.

Millwall are in the market for a new striker after learning that Wood has turned down a move to The Den in favour of an offer from Leicester City.

Church has been on Jackett's radar for several years and is similar in size and style to Wood, whose move to the King Power Stadium is set to be finalised pending a medical on Thursday.

Reading have decided to cash in on Church as he enters the final six months of his contract at the Madjeski Stadium – which he has refused to extend, despite the wishes of boss Brian McDermott.

Speaking last month, Church admitted: "I can't focus too much on my contract situation and what's going to happen when I go back to Reading. I've got to focus on what I can do on the pitch.

"Some people might be happy being part of squads – and at times you are going to have to do that. But I've done that for the last three years and it is time for me to play football now.

"As a striker, scoring goals is the best feeling ever and when you don't get the chance to do that you feel like you are training for the sake of training."

Church, whose two-month loan with the Terriers comes to an end on December 31, has previously had loans at Crewe, Yeovil Town and Leyton Orient – scoring 28 goals in 92 league appearances.

Think it's a decent move. Always been backup at Reading, still young as well at 24. Hopefully a run of games and a chance to proof himself at this level.

Keogh, Church, Hendo, Batt, N'Guessen. Doesn't sound too bad does it? Even though the latter of the 2 still have something to proof and for John Marquis, a loan is definatly needed for him.

I tell you what he is a quality player, he is young,he is strong and has a lot of pace,he is sort of a wood kind of player. He isnt as strong as wood but if you play henderson up front it wont matter. He is only 24 years old aswell.Dont worry we are sorted out.If huddersfield bid more than 400,000 then remenber we have the money to bid 1.5 million.

This guy aint a patch on Wood.... Think £400k is steep considering his contract is up in summer!! Good player but would rather have Wood of course!

Chris Wood had 21 in 100... Stats mean near to nothing, more about the player fitting into our style of play...

Proven at this level, McDermott is no mug and he wants to keep him all Reading players seem to have a good attititude price seams about right as well . Add a cheeky bid for Adam Smith and I'd be happy

Would be a good signing, he's a decent player and would hopefully benefit from playing alongside hendo.

Bit of positivity everyone, Kane was fantastic - we didn't get him - we found someone just as good in Chris Wood - haven't got him - we will get an exciting new striker to score for our beloved Lions.

Hopefully a good move for both as long as lcfc stay out of this and try to emulate mcfc by buying everyone to limit others potential.

Im sure KJ knows what he is doing and will get a signature of the boy in Jan. COYL

Not a bad signing. What about Harry Kane coming back? Clayton Donaldson at Brentford also looks decent.
