GUYS Poyet says he is not surprised that former Brighton loanee Chris Wood has been scoring goals for Millwall this season.

It is understood the Seagulls are the latest club to enquire to Wood's parent club West Brom about signing the striker in January – and Poyet's comments will fuel speculation he is set to make a bid.

Wood, who has also had loan spells at Barnsley and Birmingham City, scored eight goals in 29 appearances for the Sussex side to fire to them to the League One title in the 2010-11 season.

And Poyet, speaking ahead of the Lions' visit to the Amex Stadium on Tuesday night, believes Kenny Jackett is reaping the benefits from the New Zealand international's time on the south coast.

"We had him here when he was very young and I think we helped each other," Poyet told Brighton's official site.

"He helped us a lot with his power and his goals in League One and we did our job helping him grow up and put him in shape. I'm not surprised that he's scoring.

"It worked both ways and he's a much better player. He's mature, even though he is still very young, and he's learned a lot about the game."

Asked whether he would make a bid for Wood, Poyet said: "There's been plenty of talk. He's a player we know very well so it would be easy to make a decision on him one way or the other.

"But he's with Millwall and I don't want to make a mess before the game, just in case they take it the wrong way. But we'll see."

While Wood has regularly been the star man for Millwall this season, Poyet says he has been impressed most by the Lions' team ethic.

"I really liked Millwall when they were here last season and they are in a very good position in the league. We need to try and get closer to the top.

“Millwall have been doing well because of the way they have been playing, their group of players and their consistency.

"They believe in the way they play and they are doing that for 90 minutes so they deserve credit. They are on a great run.

"From my point of view, the game they lost [against Ipswich] was the game they played the best. But that's football."
