Harris defends Millwall striker after missed chances

NEIL Harris admitted Lee Gregory would be disappointed after he missed two gilt-edged chances to score for Millwall in their 0-0 draw with Hull on Tuesday night.

Gregory shot wide of Allan McGregor’s post in the first half when through in the box, before in injury-time he fired over with just the Hull goalkeeper to beat.

Lions striker Gregory also saw a left-footed effort tipped over by McGregor, who saved Shaun Hutchinson’s point-blank header after the break.

Millwall created numerous chances, with substitute Fred Onyedinma shooting over when well placed in the area, and Ryan Tunnicliffe firing straight at McGregor after cutting in from the right before Gregory’s late opportunity.

Hull also had their chances, and Frazier Campbell made a mess of what should have been a simple pass to set up strike partner Nouha Dicko just after half-time.

And with almost the last kick of the game, Evandro Goebel found space but fired wide of Jordan Archer’s far post.

“I’m a little bit disappointed, I thought for 15 minutes we controlled the game, we looked threatening,” Harris said. “Then the next half hour they controlled the game well and [Jarrod] Bowen had two good chances.

“I thought in open play we defended our box really well.

“When Steve Morison came on I thought he changed the swing of the game, with his experience, his guile and link-up play. His organisation was outstanding.

"Tunnicliffe should score, Fred should score and obviously Greggors at the end had a great chance. He’s just looking for that goal to get him going.

“It’s another game when we’ve created a load of chances at home but not had the end product.

“Lee will be disappointed and we’ll have to pick him up again. What I will say as a former striker myself, when you’re not getting chances it’s a disaster, it’s the end of the world.

“When you’re getting chance after chance you know the next one is coming, it’s just about getting that goal. You need a penalty, one off your bum, one to hit you and go in from an inch just to you up and running again. It’s when the chances aren’t coming that’s when there is a problem.

“Lee knows he’s getting the chances. He had a good one at the weekend and it was a great save. He had three chances tonight. He’s getting chances and that’s a positive.”
