Millwall midfielder determined to fight for place

BEN Thompson doesn’t completely rule out a loan move away from Millwall – but is determined to fight for a place in the first team.

Thompson, 22, made his first league appearance of the season – his debut in the Championship – as a 64th-minute substitute in last Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Burton.

That was just his third game of the campaign, after he played 47 times in 2016-17.

The summer additions of George Saville and Ryan Tunnicliffe dropped him down the pecking order, but with Shaun Williams not back until January he knows he is “next in line” if there is another injury or suspension in midfield.

Youngsters Harry Smith, Jamie Philpot, James Brown and Sid Nelson have enjoyed productive loans this season, but asked if he had considered a similar route to first-team football, Thompson said: “Not really, I haven’t really thought about it too much.

He added: “Obviously it could be a possibility depending on where I stand in terms of the first team.

“I know January is only a couple of months away but I haven’t really thought that far ahead. But anything’s possible.

“I’m next in line for a place in midfield and I’ll just have to see what happens.

“It’ll depend on what’s best for me at the time. If I need game time and anything to improve my game then it could be a possibility.

“But I’m here at Millwall and ready when called upon.”
