Millwall boss Harris wants Fred to stay 'long term'

MILLWALL boss Neil Harris is still hopeful that Fred Onyedinma will sign a new deal with the club after the forward scored his sixth goal of the season in last Saturday’s win over Southend.

The 20-year-old's header extended the Lions' unbeaten run to 11 games in all competitions and but he is yet to sign a new contract with his current deal expiring this summer.

Harris feels he has the right blend of youth and experience that will enable Onyedinma and other young players to "rise" with his side.

“Fred has come through our ranks, he’s a great lad,” Harris said. “He’s a really good professional for a young man – we want him to stay here for the long term.

“A lot of our young players will fly the nest one day or they'll rise with us – or move past us at certain times. I understand that.

"We would like Fred to stay with us and continue his development, but we can only do what we can do.

Harris added: “What we have here is a great mix between experience and youth and the youth drive the experienced players every day.

“When they come into training a little bit tired and the young lads are running past them, they have to compete.

“What the experienced ones do for the younger lads is keep their feet on the ground and remind them how to prepare and recover and remind them the next game is the most important.”
