GREGG Wylde has endured a tumultuous start to his spell on loan at Northampton as the Cobblers were hammered 5-0 at Bristol Rovers on Saturday prompting the club to sack boss Rob Page.
Wylde, who made his debut for Northampton in last Monday’s 2-1 home defeat to Bradford, was taken off in the 28th minute on Saturday with the side already 4-0 down.
Former Plymouth winger Wylde was making his first start in the league since Millwall’s 1-1 draw at home to Bradford on September 3 and Page acknowledged that contributed to his early withdrawal.
Before his dismissal Page told Northampton Chronicle & Echo: “Gregg has come into the football club and needs match fitness. He was short of that on Saturday.”
In the FA Cup at the weekend, Paris Cowan-Hall played 66 minutes for Wycombe as former Lions striker Adebayo Akinfenwa scored a late goal in their 2-1 win over non-league Stourbridge.
Sid Nelson made his debut for League Two Newport County, but he couldn’t help his new team avoid falling to their seventh successive defeat as they lost 3-1 at Stevenage at the weekend.
There were mixed feelings for Kris Twardek on his first start for National League Braintree Town. Twardek was making his full debut in senior league football and set up Braintree’s opener for Jack Midson at home to Chester.
But Chester replied with two second-half goals to seal the points.
Torquay are three points above Braintree in the league after the Gulls, with Paul Rooney in their side, lost 1-0 at home to Boreham Wood.
In National League South at the weekend, young Lions goalkeeper Harry Girling couldn’t prevent Welling United losing 2-0 at Hemel Hempstead Town.
