EFL Trophy preview: Millwall vs. Gillingham

INJURY rules Aiden O’Brien, Shaun Cummings and Shaun Hutchinson out of Millwall’s EFL Trophy Group H fixture against Gillingham on Tuesday night.

Lions boss Neil Harris gave full senior debuts to Noah Chesmain and Kris Twardek in the 2-0 win over West Brom U23s in their first group game, and he is likely to use some of his younger players again against Justin Edinburgh’s side.

Shane Ferguson is away on international duty, while Shaun Williams and Lee Gregory could be rested after recent injury problems.

Midfielder Calum Butcher should get another chance to impress, while Jamie Philpot and Sid Nelson are also pushing for places in the starting XI.

Gillingham could give debuts to ex-Aston Villa player Chris Herd and Frank Nouble, formerly of Chelsea, who both signed for the club on Monday.

Cody McDonald and Ryan Jackson are out, while the Gills also have doubts over Scott Wagstaff and Bradley Dack, who scored in his side’s 3-0 league win over Millwall at The Den last December.

Like Harris, Edinburgh will make changes to his side, but admitted his resources are stretched.

Edinburgh said: “I will put a team out that I feel can go and get a result. We have to abide by the rules, in terms of players who have played in the last game or the most games, but we will abide by it.”

“We are short in areas. With the system this year, in terms of going to get loans, at a time you would normally, you are scuppered in that but we knew the rules at the start of the season.

“It has been frustrating but we have to do better.”
