EFL Cup preview: Barnet vs. Millwall

NEIL Harris has ruled Lee Gregory out of the EFL Cup first-round clash at Barnet on Tuesday evening.

Gregory had a scan on Monday on the injury that forced him off at half-time in the 3-0 League One win over Oldham on Saturday.

Joe Martin came on for Gregory at the break and the defender could start at left-back, with Aiden O’Brien partnering Steve Morison up front as he did in the second half against the Latics. Harris said on Saturday centre-back Shaun Hutchinson would not be ready to make his competitive Lions debut as he continues to struggle with a hamstring problem.

Harris has given no hint that he intends to play an understrength side at The Hive Stadium, where Millwall will hope to do to Barnet what Martin Allen’s side did at the same stage of the competition at The Den last season when they won 2-1 after extra time.

Millwall, though, have lost both previous competitive fixtures between the clubs.

Allen, meanwhile, was disappointed with his side’s 1-1 draw with Cambridge on the opening day in League Two at the weekend.

But the Barnet boss is satisfied with the condition of his squad and the strength in depth he can call on, including former Millwall attacker Shaun Batt, whom he left out at Cambridge.

“These players have been trained like Royal Marines, they’re as fit as butchers’ dogs,” he said on Barnet’s official website.

“You could also see the strength of the squad on the bench (Saturday).

“Tom Champion was superb against Eastleigh and Bondz N’Gala has been excellent for us.

“We weren’t able to bring them all today, but back at The Hive we’ve got other boys who have been great in pre-season.

“They’re desperate to prove that they can play for Barnet, players like Shaun Batt and Ben Tomlinson.

“Mauro Vilhete has been really good in pre-season and then there are all these U21s.

“They’re pushing on and they’re close.

“So when Millwall come along on Tuesday, we’ve got to go all out and believe that we can beat these teams.”
