Millwall boss excited ahead of pre-season training

LIONS boss Neil Harris is looking forward to the start of Millwall's pre-season on Friday when the players return to Calmont Road to begin their fitness work.

The squad have had five weeks off after May's League One play-off final defeat to Barnsley.

And Harris feels the fact his squad have had less time off will be beneficial to the players when they return this week.

“I'm looking forward to seeing them and getting them out there working," Harris said. "The boys are certainly looking forward to getting back.

“There's some nervous excitement and energy about pre-season and certainly now, there’s competition for places as the boys want to come back and play.

“Pre-season is two things: it’s your base of fitness for the whole season which carries though the year one Christmas and Easter when the games come thick and fast; and it’s you opportunity to impress the manager and stake a claim for a place in the starting line up on August 6."

“They will come back and be tested on Friday so we can gauge their fitness levels individually. Saturday and the weekend will be straight into hard running and into ball work.

Harris added: “The good thing about reaching a play-off final is the break is shorter, so the boys don't need as long to get going as they would have done.

“They've had only five weeks off, instead of eight weeks where they have to build in slowly, but after five, it isn't too bad and they can get back into their rhythm quicker.

“I’m ready to work, I'm looking forward to working with he squad, I cant wait to see the players on Friday and getting them back into it. You can’t go too mad, though, and you have to be sensible.

“There is only so much physical activity a group of players can do."
