Debutant Osborne impresses Jackett during Millwall win

KENNY Jackett is hoping Karleigh Osborne's debut performance at Peterborough is a sign of things to come from the centre-back.

Osborne partnered Shane Lowry at the heart of the Millwall defence in the 2-1 win at London Road after Jackett decided to drop Darren Ward and Danny Shittu from his line-up.

Ward was left out of the squad altogether and Jackett confirmed the experienced 33-year-old was not injured.

"There wasn't an injury, I just wanted to go with Karleigh," he said afterwards. "I was disappointed with my central defenders against Blackpool – I felt they could have done better.

"Osborne, Scott Malone and Chris Taylor are all fairly new to the club and are trying to make their mark. I thought Osborne put in a good performance. He showed a lot of potential and we're pleased he's here."

Fellow summer arrival Malone, who started at left-back having been deployed on the wing in the league-opener against Blackpool, scored his first goal for the club to draw the Lions level before Darius Henderson's winner.

And Jackett believes the versatility of the former Wolves trainee will come in handy this season.

"He can play both positions depending on what we need," he said.

"It very much depends on our formation and the players we have on the pitch. At 21, he's an interesting acquisition for us and I look forward to seeing how he develops."
