NEIL Harris paid tribute to Shaun Williams for his performance in the 2-0 win over Burton Albion on Monday night.

Williams had been kept out of the starting XI by Ben Thompson after returning from a two-match ban but started his second successive fixture in the absence of Jimmy Abdou against the Brewers.

Midfielder Williams made a decisive contribution in the 18th minute when he picked out Lee Gregory’s run behind Burton’s defence and the striker rounded Jon McLaughlin to give Millwall a 2-0 lead.

Abdou and Shane Ferguson return for this Saturday’s trip to Colchester, and Harris said this week he will have a tough decision to make who to pair in central midfield.

Thompson has cemented his place in the side with a string of impressive performances, while Abdou was arguably playing his best football of the season before he went away on international duty with Comoro Islands.

Harris is pleased with his midfield options and praised Williams for his display against the league leaders.

“I thought Shaun did really well in the middle of the park and I thought his ball for Gregs’ goal was outstanding, the weight of the pass and the vision to see the run,” Harris said. “It was worthy of leagues higher than this.

“He’s got that quality and, in this team, what one player is not so good at someone else provides and him and Ben are a good balance in the middle of the park.

“I've spoken before about the balance in midfield with Shaun, Jimmy and Ben. They all bring different qualities to the game.”
