Millwall may need midfield reinforcements with duo ruled out

MILLWALL could be forced back into the loan transfer market after Neil Harris confirmed on Tuesday night that Jimmy Abdou and Ed Upson are set for significant spells out of the side with injury.

Abdou damaged his shoulder just four minutes into last Saturday’s defeat to Peterborough.

Upson suffered a knee injury in a collision in the second half of that game as he attempted a shot at goal.

The latter could be sidelined for up to six weeks with Abdou facing an even longer stretch out.

That leaves the Lions lacking experience in midfield. Jack Powell (21) and George Saville (22) started against Northampton on Tuesday and Ben Thompson (20) came off the bench.

Harris now has time before the next league game to consider if he needs reinforcements.

He said: “I can’t hide the fact that they’re two really important players for us. Jimmy is Millwall, he just gives us that spirit and energy.

“Ed’s done really well. We talk about players making an impact whether starting or coming off the bench and he does that. He gets the way we want to play, they both get it. They’re big losses, but then other people will get the opportunity.

“We have an opportunity to work with George, who did really well. Lee Martin has come back into the side and gave us something different, the positions he was getting in were great and I was really pleased with him.

“There will be opportunities for young lads. Jack got his chance, Ben came on in the last two games and I thought he was outstanding when he stepped onto the pitch, so we’ll see.”

@Longfield Lion: Cahill's having a great time playing for Shanghai, so we aren't going to see him at the Den unfortunately

these injuries will show us how strong our squad is, with saville on board we might be ok, but bomber will need to stick his toe into the loan market again, the cobblers lived up to their nickname but that was the entire squad available on tuesday, with williams back we will be one sub short against swindon.

Is Williams injured? Williams and Saville in the middle with fred and Thompson either wing would work? or even push Edwards up the field to right wing. He still has the legs for it!!!

@leel331987: I would leave Carlos just where he is Lee. It looked to me as though Fred has been having some coaching from Neil and Carlos who has sais on a previous post that he told him he does not have to beat a man every time and vary the play. I noticed on Tuesday that he was much more likely to pass for a better option than take someone on but when he did take them on he inevitably got passed them.

Millwallsteve can't you just say he had a poor game instead of slating him off - our players need encouragement not destruction. They knew what they were doing taking Jimmi A out right at the start - they had done their homework. GS will have his loan extended but we will need another experienced midfielder in ASAP. Do it early NH so you have a few days to work with him and the team. I reckon the JPT final win, play offs and a cup run with home games against Spurs and Man City.
    Looking dodgy for Millwall Lionesses.
