Report: Millwall 0-2 Chesterfield

Away result5

JAY O’Shea’s brace helped Chesterfield inflict a third successive league defeat on Millwall at The Den this season.

The midfielder was given way too much space on the edge of the box to arrow a right-footed volley past Jordan Archer into the bottom corner on 17 minutes.

Dean Saunders’ side dominated the first half as Millwall struggled to put any moves of note together and, though the Lions improved after the break, O’Shea sealed it in injury time with the last kick of the game.

The Spireites deserved their win despite a spirited second-half performance from the home side.

Much of that was down to Aiden O’Brien, who came on for Lee Gregory at half-time, and Millwall came closest to equalising 15 minutes from the end only for Tommy Lee to deny Jimmy Abdou.

Fred Onyedinma also could have equalised when he just failed to connect with an O'Brien cross, but Chesterfield were dangerous on the break and substitute Mani Dieseruvwe nearly wrapped it up when he shot across Archer.

As he did last week, Archer also produced another one-on-one to deny Sam Morsy in the first half, but he was blameless when O’Shea’s shot took a deflection and looped over him to give Chesterfield their third win of the season.

Did Harris stick with the same formation?

The Millwall boss sprung something of a surprise before the game by dropping Shaun Williams and giving Jack Powell his first league start of the season. Chesterfield started with a 4-5-1 formation and the Lions matched them with Abdou, Ben Thompson and Powell in the centre of the pitch.

Powell sat at the base, but wasn’t restricted from moving forward. He has bags of skill and is a classy, confident footballer who said in pre-season he feels he has a complete game.

And it was obvious early on that he wanted to get the ball down and pass it only to find few options in front of him. It was Chesterfield who dominated the ball in the opening 45 minutes, with captain Morsy dictating everything in midfield.

The uncertainty worked its way into Millwall’s defensive mindset as well and they seemed unsure who exactly should have been closing down in the build-up to O’Shea’s goal.

Archer picks up where he left off

He didn’t have much of a chance with O’Shea’s shot. It may have taken him slightly by surprise but it was really well placed into the bottom corner.

On 40 minutes though he produced a brilliant save to deny Morsy after the midfielder found himself free in the box. Archer rushed off his line to spread himself and divert the ball out for a corner.

The mood was really edgy already at that stage and would have plummeted had that gone in. As it was the players were booed off at half-time and, apart from Powell’s attempts to get something going, there was little else to be positive about.

There were few scares for Chesterfield keeper Lee to deal with and the first-half stats were damning: Millwall had just 31% possession and no shots on goal.

What changed after the break?

O’Brien came on and immediately looked more comfortable in the role than Steve Morison. He gave Millwall a lift and offered more pace to trouble Liam O’Neil.

That was something that was clearly missing in the first half and Millwall finally started to pin their opponents back as the half went on. Shaun Cummings was also instructed to push further forward and had a number of opportunities to work crosses for Morison, now in a central role.

It all resulted in much more activity in and around Chesterfield’s box and Lee had to pull off a stunning save to deny Abdou an equaliser on 75 minutes.

Paris Cowan-Hall also came on to offer more directness and while it was all a bit helter-skelter, at least Harris got a reaction from his side in the second half.

@lowdown: I know where your coming from. Speechless other than to say this is not working with NH at the helm. As much as I respect Harris he is totally out of his depth. An experienced person is required as assistant or to take over totally. As said many times pay peanuts get monkeys. Billy Sharp, Billy Paynter, Adam Le fondre just to name a few all finding the net. But of course we also have an inept defence. Sh*t we need major surgery. Sorry I thought initially I was lost for words.

So far, this league that is supposed to be poor,
is throwing up teams that seem to be playing football.

The enlarged pitch has massively back fired on Millwall, teams just come to the Den and actually play football leaving our group of misfits chasing shadows. Said before we badly need a tactician/experienced manager to sort this mess out. Seems managers who were once defenders understand the need to build a team from the back first and foremost.

We were s*** today, despite the formation 4-4-2 when it should have been 4-3-3 better but as allways last minute never works out at the end

Good Team Line up today tho

We need a Deffensive player such as Carlos Edwards

    it could be the solution

To all those who was slating us for making sensible football assessments by stating our squad might not be capable in this division, what are your views now?

I'm not digging anyone out or calling out "I told you so" just think we are in this together now and we need to act fast and call for the board to get this sorted ASAP!!!

I couldn't make today's game as I am on holiday, any positives?

We released 18 players and replaced them with almost nothing. I have supported this club through thick and thin for over 40 years. There have probably been worse times but I cannot remember a worse team then this shower. Millwall as a club is rotten to the core from the board to the management team to the playing staff. Nobody seems to know what they are doing, but I certainly know where we are going. Years ago we won at Chesterfield last game of the season to stay up. That was the catalyst for the George Graham and John Doc era. 30 years on we are heading for the league 2 drop door again but this time I think we will fall straight threw it. Our two biggest rivals Palace win at Chelsea and West Ham win at Liverpool. You couldn't make this s**** up.

@NPEgentlemansclub: exactly, clear out of players was a minimum and could see most the team isn't league 1 even. Then not to get decent players in but likes of Craig says it all.

Harris not experienced, Lomas had more experience but what does that matter as we just need passion, commitment, energy right? No mention of skill, flair, goal scorers because they cost. Playing Forde too many times was a mistake.

Club is heading to league 2 rapidly and with still a poor team no tinkering with the dross will make one difference.

Not much being said from JB/AA of late I see....

Harris's legend status will all but have disappeared shortly
If this was Lomas or Holloway they would be slagging him off.
Today he proved he is no different, if he loved the club like he says he does
He would have resigned after the rubbish he put out there for our last 4 home games.
I am afraid to say tactics wise he is not got a clue
So if he won't walk JB sack him now
Because he will do exactly what Tuttle did and disappear into the non leagues never to be heard of again
Shame Harris you took the job and did not learn from your 4-0 thrashing by Southend

Literally find this annoying now. Absolutely stupid. Dont expect to win every game can take defeat. But this is more than that? Massive under lying problem. If we are that bad at home we need to reverse to a 4-5-1. Playing 2 or 3 up front is only making us more vunerable. Getting fed up of n.a.d stories dont even read them now. Players waffling aload of crap. We loo a team who is waiting to lose from the get go. Ive tried to keep faith in gregory but he just isnt good enough for me. Maybe not suited to us who knows but it isnt working. Morrison is useless anyway i said that straight away. Not blaming harris for starting youngsters but i am worried where we are heading. Can we play away every week?

Maybe Harris is to blame ? I don't want to blame Harris but we are shocking , we will be fighting this year if things stay the same , we have a few good players like Fred !! First half was woeful, the whole team were off the pace, Chesterfield has so much time/space and had about 10 corners within the first 15mins. Only tactic seemed to be lump it towards Morrison and all this achieved was us giving Chesterfield the ball back and we couldn't win the second ball. Apart from Nelson no one looked particularly interested and even Fred looked lost...

Second half was like watching a different team, O'Brien was very lively, wanted and battled for the ball and could of had two assists for his efforts. Late goal was a sucker punch and to be fair to the lads I thought we were good for a point.

Wasn't one of Fred better games, nothing he tried really worked out and although he has been our best player he need to be more clinical with his finishing and needs to time his runs better as was caught offside in good moves...
For me as much as it was s*** result there are some positives. In Archer, Nelson, Powel, Fred & O'Brien we have some good young player, however it is gonna take time for them to live up to their potential and think we're look at a mid table finish at the very best!!

And just for the record Gregory isn't good enough, done nothing second half and can't see him even managing 10 goals this season let alone the 20 goals a season his position requires!!

@jenks4: Ha my bad, accurate story teller I am put that down to an iPhone typo. All in all Gregory has been disappointing, usually plenty of effort but a striker who doesn't score or assist is a pointless asset. For me I'd like to see Morison play as the central striker with Fred and O'Brien running the channels then give marquis a chance off the bench!

I'm another one whose supported millwall for 40 years, and I can't recall a time when we have been so poor for so long under so many managers. I genuinely don't know what the answer is but it needs to be something drastic. Too many members of staff (playing & non-playing) who aren't performing. It's not good enough

4 homes defeats before the end of August - is this some kind of record?

why defend Harris - he has had all summer to sort this out - he does not know his formation - his tactics are schoolboy - he brought in Craig who is finished - he has no cover at full back - he continues to hit high balls to players who don't have those strengths - as I have said before , it isn't my fault so it must be someone's

Morison , Craig and a L1 full back who has nt played are his answer to losing so many players - I don't know what people expect - haven't scored in 3 of the last 4 league matches

he says in the press conference we played with honesty and made tackles - well yeah!!

what about quality - what he should have said after every game this year was - we are not very good and I know where we are weak and I will fix it (we beat Shrewsbury, but you will notice where they are in the league) but instead some meaningless drivel about playing with passion and not taking our chances -

The players are good enough at this level.
Archer - trained by Spurs and has shown is a really talented keeper.
Forde - Been a good Championship goalkeeper for a while international experience
Cummings - Came with great reviews from an established Championship side.
Sid - Alongside Hooiveld Flourished last season in Championship.
Beevers - Again alongside Hooiveld looked very good interest from Championship clubs.
Craig - Captain and Player of the season for a club promoted from League 1 recently
Thompson - very talented shown can hold his own at this level
Jimmy - works hard and has played in a 2 man midfield regularly in the Championship
Powell - has put in very positive performances against good sides more than negative ones
Williams - stood out for MK Dons prompting interest from us and Brighton + was one of our best players in the Championship last season
Upson - back end of last season arguably best player we had
Paris - came with glowing reports from League 2 still yet to have a chance
Fred - Championship level talent at least
Morison - Premier League + Championship experience proven League 1 goalscorer
Gregory - Movement up top on his own last season was superb held his own in Championship
AOB - another Championship level talent interest from Premier League teams
Webster - played key role for Yeovil in their promotion from League 1
Edwards - Shone at Championship level
Marquis - scored goals in League 1 for Gillingham
What does that say about our current squad they are good enough for this level we just can't get the best out of them. We need a manager with fresh ideas and tactics because long ball doesn't work even Stoke abandoned it. I would love a scenario like at Birmingham where they looked doomed and Rowett went in and totally turned them around. I think there are some hugely talented managers out there with new ideas that keep with the revolution of the game rather than all of the backward tactics we have at the moment.
Sorry for the rant guys I just really want to see a positive change.

so true - players underperforming - not playing to their strengths - but to play well through midfield you need pace up front and players who can pass it out from the back - we do not have these - that has been evident for so long it becomes ridiculous - what has Harris done to address this - nothing !!!!!!!!

This is becoming a joke now we are the laughing stock from our rivals like Charlton and Palace. It was to soon fir Bomber to take over as manager after 2 years as under 21 manager. Disgrace from above throwing him in at the deep end with no money to spend on players. If you do not invest in players it really does not matter who your manager is. KJ so that and moved on you are not telling me IH becomes a bad manager over night he took Blackpool and palace up again ni money so loan signings and old wage theifs like Fuller. JB get your cheque book out before its to late get a new manager in with experience make bomber his number 2. Nothing will change without player investment as this bunch of so called football players are not good enough.

@Markas Hollowhead did not suddenly become a bad manager, he always was a bad manager - but one with the gift of the gab. Check his career win statistics, they are some of the worst and then look up the way he acted at past clubs. Then consider how much better the same players did at Palace when Pullis was appointed. Then look at the loan players his allegedly good contacts allowed him to bring in - none. Even a little research before his appointment would have shown that Hollowhead was - and is - a dud.

The problem now is the same as the problem under the moron Hollowhead and Lomas before that. It is the problem that was largely ignored in the comments when all wanted money spent and new strikers.
Millwall is a club with limited resources. What such a club needs before anything else is an organised and capable defence – and that is not just the back four but a whole team that knows how to defend, who does what, where and when.
The managers appointed since KJ have all lacked the ability to implement such organisation. I suggest the appointment has come too soon for Harris, despite his good football brain, so Sam Allardyce, Martin Keown or someone similar needs to be brought in as support - and soon or the end will be swift.

This is the reason I didn't want Harris to be manager because when s*** hits the fan we ain't gonna be calling for he's head. Yes he is a millwall legend but what he's done on the pitch before now ain't gonna count on the sideline now. Harris need to step down and no none of this is he's fault but let's be honest he isn't good enough.

We need to sign an inform goal scorer with bags of confidence around him. Obviously this will cost money. But we offloaded 18 wage thieves and journey men this summer. We haven't exactly been spending millions of pounds during the pre season. We are alledged to have the 3rd biggest budget in the league. Where's that money going? Perhaps it's being hemorraghed on the the space filled with oxygen where the old TV screen used to be. I don't know.

We need a RB to provide cover as Edwards is only contracted until Xmas. Marlon Romeo still young. Cummings not good enough at this level (although today was probably his best performance).

Need a new CB with ability and experience who is proven. A Hooiveld calibre. Keep Nelson and Beevers working.

We need a midfield general. Bailey type player. Get a grip of the game, and quick. Maybe even bring back Bailey on a pay as you play deal. Where is he now?

Address the LB situation as it's diabolical.T craig second fiddle LB.

Rip up Upson, Williams and Websters contracts as they are becoming liabilities and don't seem hungry enough anymore. Loan Fordey out to Welling and bring back King.

Get shot of Gregory if Huddersfield want him.

    Marquis if anyone wants him.

Only 50 odd hours of the transfer window left. But unless Harris and JB get cracking I can only see a relagation fight at the end of this season.

Perhaps a new manager may be required or an advisor to the management team who is proven like George Graham. I'd even have Terry Venables right about now. Or any old head that will do it for the right price. We can't afford another Holloway saga.

He should have left and not taken the £1 million marching money. He is a disgrace to football.

Like to finish with saying the Referee and the Lino's were were two fireworks short of a display as well.

Any chance of plugging this sinking ship before it ends up in League two waters?!

    One deflated fan here.

I personally think Bomber needs an experienced assistant, someone who knows football inside and out. Nothing against Livermore but I just think Neil would benefit from having someone who's been there and done it. Gregory, I'm sorry, just doesn't have what it takes, O'Brien is the best foil for Moro. Apparently we tried to sign Morsy last season. He looked like the sort of player we are missing. Jimmy is not an organiser and playing him with the kids, in the first half, showed that; we need a leader to help the kids out. Few bright spots, Thompson looks a player, Archer looked good again, Moro played well, O'Brien looked good when he came on, Cummings looked much better than recent weeks. Hoping for a couple of signings in the next couple of days. We need them!

The defence has no pace , oppo teams play simple pass & move football & our defence falls pver.
    Pathetic.
We need a new CB to play alongside Sid if not then play Williams there, at least he'll have a bit more pace, keep Beevers as cover or sell him asap , he only slows the game down anyway.
Bomber should have sorted this in the summer but put his head in the sand cos we all knew the defence wasn't up to it.
