Millwall will be flexible in approach this season says Harris

NEIL Harris isn’t ruling out using the 4-3-3 formation that was successful against Scunthorpe for home games.

Chesterfield visit The Den next weekend and Harris and his management will study Dean Saunders’ side this week before settling on an approach.

He said: “I’ll definitely consider it for next week. I’ve made it clear that I want to play 4-4-2 but I’m not naïve to think that we can play that every week.

“We went with a slightly different shape with three strikers (on Saturday).

“We’ll certainly look at Chesterfield, and we’ll look back on the performance and how we’ve done and I’ll pick an XI, tactics and a formation that I feel will be most effective against them.”

The Millwall boss was pleased with the response he got from his side after three successive defeats, but feels they haven’t been getting decisions in their opponents’ box.

Shaun Williams looked like he had won a penalty for the Lions last Saturday, but referee Richard Clark waved play on after the ball seemed to strike Charlie Goode’s arms.

“At some stages of the season you just have to roll your sleeves up,” Harris said. “And then take a little bit of luck when it comes your way.

“But I still don’t believe we’re having that in the opposition penalty area.

“We haven’t got decisions, but other ones during the season will go our way.”

Williams also had the chance to open his account at Scunthorpe when he shot at Joe Anyon from 10 yards, and Harris admitted the team shape used at Glanford Park brings out the best in him.

“Shaun did very well,” Harris said. “He has played in a three-man midfield with clubs before here.

“It’s clear Shaun finds it a lot easier to control the game in a three-man midfield.

“His calmness on the ball and his defensive positioning helps everybody, but I was gutted for him with that chance, the keeper makes a great save and it could have won us the game in the first half.

“And it was the same against Barnsley, one off the line and one he couldn’t quite reach.

“He has defensive ability but he could also have had three goals in two games.”

I've always wanted to see how well we'd play 4231 with Williams and Powell at CDM. That would be a strong pairing imo

@mfc247: Yeah I've noticed that. It's a shame really because from what I have seen, he is a good footballer.

Seems that way, but pre-season NH said Powell still has a part to play. So mixed messages at the moment. Guess he feels he can't play both Thompson & Powell together yet.
Shame as he looked live a very good player...sure he'll get a chance eventually

Why don't we play the formation which suits our players best, then if it is not working and the opposition are having it there way then adapt to a system which will nullify there style. I might be wrong but let's have a go at teams and let them change there way of playing and worry about us.

All the time we have Williams in midfield we'll never get anywhere he's two weak challenging for the ball. Notice I said challenge & not tackle coz he clearly can't. NAD instead of havin the info graphic on the team stats why not have it on the players stats then everyone would no who the s*** is.

Its best to have the formation 4-4-3 Adding Carlos Edwards, AOB, Powell and Thompson in the line up

Give them a chance and they will shine to get there career up and running

Penalties against Shrewsbury, Barnet and Coventry says we are getting decisions, just need someone to score them when we do get them.

Some of these posts have some good tactical formations.
On others sites you'd get slated but I'm with everyone else, time for Powell & Thompson as a CMid pairing.
Jimmy always on the bench & if you need to bring him on at halftime then bring him on. Thing is he's always a 6/10 nearly every game we need some fresh blood.
When we gonna see PCH , don't even know if he is good or bad. better than L Martin when he's on the bench!!
Wanna see Obrien get a good run too I think there's goals in him.
We'll need to be much more flexible in this league, bit of a shock to all of us how decent some of these teams are.

@Millwallsteve: Thing is about jimmy,he put's in fairly solid perfomance's in games, hence his 6/10 average,we need his solid games and it is up to our flair mid-fielder's to step up to the plate and supply our striker's,unfortunatly they have failed to do this, our forward's over the past two season's have had to make the majority of their chance's between them selve's, ie gregogory running all over the place instead of playing off the shoulder of their CB and not competing for the long ball which the bigger and stronger CB is alway's going to win,Fred has changed things but if we are to keep playing william's he has to be the main man in mid-field,something he has not been for some time, when the flair side of our mid-field start to improve we will find jimmy's game will improve as the pressure of often having to win or close down the ball or player will lesson.
At the moment we need jimmy.

Could somebody please tell me what is happening with PCH? He is by far our quickest winger yet there is no sign of him. I understand he was a purchase by IH but we all know that pace and explosive pace at that has proven very successful at this level in the past.

Some decent formations on here, id personally go with (when all fit)

    GK Archer
    RB Carlos
    CB Beevers
    CB Craig
    LB Martin
    CM Abdou
    CM Thompson
    RW O'Brien
    AM Fred
    LW Paris

    ST Morison

id drop Williams and Gregory as they don't convince me at the moment, I would have Aidan, Fred and Paris all Interchanging and playing off Morison, pace and movement would scare the s**t out of defences in this league! COYL
